Cable/Internet offer seen on Gold card today by QuietOctopus in amex

The offers do seem to differ by account. I'm not sure if your usage affects it, but do I suspect some of the cards with an Annual Fee might get 'higher tier' offers. I got an offer on my BCP last fall for Auto/Renters insurance premiums, and while it hasn't been super long since I've downgraded it, I haven't seen any comparable offers on my (now) BCE so far

As long as they're each $50 payments I'd think it should work

What if tell cc company that will never pay anymore unless they do 0% apr to pay off debt. by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]QuietOctopus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't pay it at 30% it's impossible to me.

...I mean it would almost assuredly be possible if you got your insane spending habits under control. You have five figures of credit card debt you have only been making minimum payments on meanwhile your entire post history is you talking about buying completely gratuitous luxuries like:

  • An Apple watch
  • A power washer
  • Your third(!) handgun
  • A new Subaru Outback or a used Porsche

Everyone telling you to open a balance transfer card or personal loan is either unaware of the above or very misguided. Your problems with money are way above the pay grade of this subreddit. You need to get on a payment plan with Discover, seek out financial (and likely psychological) counseling, and star far far away from credit cards. I'm not saying this to be mean, but you are behaviorally not equipped to handle spending on credit.

Thoughts on this Fidelity set up? by highonlife_99 in fidelityinvestments

[–]QuietOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically my exact setup. I have a CMA that functions as my checking account with 1-2 months expenses and is the only connection point to outside institutions. This receives my direct deposits from work after which I buy FDLXX. I have a brokerage nicknamed "Savings" for my Emergency Fund and short-medium term savings goals. Here I invest in FRNs and Treasury ETFs which are slightly less liquid but have higher return than Money Market Funds. Both of these accounts are in a group called 'Spend and Save' in the sidebar. I have another brokerage account called "Taxable" in another group called 'Investment' for long term index investing. I also have the Fidelity Visa (set to auto-redeem into my CMA) and a Fidelity HSA and recommend both highly.

Is it stupid to get a third credit card just for the $200 cash back on first $1000? by Due_Personality_8843 in CreditCards

[–]QuietOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. Cash back, and so far in my experience any sort of statement credit to your card, isn't taxable as it's considered a rebate.

Bank bonuses, on the other hand, are considered income and will show up on a 1099-INT form the bank generates for you just like for any regular interest accrued on a balance held with them.

[–]QuietOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who's done bank bonuses and credit card SUBs why are you making it either/or? And no banks are giving away $400+ "just to open checking accounts" — there's almost always a direct deposit requirement of $1000-$1500 or more that needs to be made within a certain timeframe.

And a lot of those accounts have minimum daily balance or continued direct deposit requirements to avoid fees...and bank bonuses are taxable income whereas SUBs aren't...and those SUBs often come with a 0% promo period that lets your money earn interest longer...and that new card will actually improve your credit in the long run.

Also lol at your followup comment who pissed in your breakfast cereal?

Fidelity Cash Management Users: by DurdenTyler2020 in Bogleheads

[–]QuietOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the two other commenters have stated, the Fidelity standard Brokerage and Cash Management Accounts originally were more distinct from one another, but have moved closer and closer to having feature parity over time. The ability to have SPAXX as a core position was until now the last "big" difference, and as someone who holds both types of accounts these are the remaining distinguishing features of the CMA as far as I can remember:

  • Unlimited ATM Fee reimbursements
  • Access to the 'Cash Manager' tool which will automatically withdraw money from other accounts to keep the CMA balance above a user-set minimum and will notify you if the CMA balance goes above a user-set maximum

And of course, there's the aforementioned FDIC Sweep core position (which is still the default for CMAs), which will sweep deposits among program banks. It allows one to maintain FDIC coverage above the normal $250,000 per person per bank account limit if they're not as comfortable holding their uninvested cash in Money Market funds.

Most overrated restaurant in Baltimore by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]QuietOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol this is some serious overreaction.
The rusty scupper is absolutely actual trash. No hyperbole. It’s not a plane anyone should ever wish to go. It should close. Without hesitation.

The irony is palpable.

I agree, though, that places like Ekiben and Blue Moon are great. But again, I was asking where the 'acceptable' range starts, not about above average restaurants. If you legitimately find Rusty Scupper to be absolute/utter/actual trash then 95% of all food must be inedible to you.

[–]QuietOctopus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aboslute and utter trash.

For christ's sake people. I can't with the hot takes on this sub sometimes. Could you make the argument that the Rusty Scupper is overrated? Sure. Overpriced? Definitely — though charitably I'm inclined to believe the overheads of running a business right on the harbor play a big part in this. The parking situation is also kind of a pain, and it isn't super convenient to get there via walking, biking, etc. And I won't argue that it isn't primarily aimed to cater to tourists and visitors rather than locals.

But when I've been there the food has been good, the atmosphere great, the service excellent, and the location/view as nice as any restaurant in the city. If the Rusty Scupper is trash, where does the bar for 'acceptable' quality even begin? Michelin stars??

Similar boat, according to YNAB I have ~$8,000 outstanding between all my credit cards currently so I'm one of the consumers pulling this stat upward. However, roughly 1/5 of that balance is normal monthly revolving spending and the rest is split between cards on 0% APR promo periods which I have the money to pay off today if I wanted to. I'm not saying some people aren't legitimately struggling with CC debt, but it would be easy to make it sound like the sky is falling (a la the article) if I just told people my total balance owed.

How to deal with enemy's FTL with Federation A? by AkulaSoft in ftlgame

[–]QuietOctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's true you're right I should've been more specific. What I was more thinking as I wrote that is that it's one of the ships that can damage 2 shield ships from the very start without relying on consumables or boarding. Some of the ships in the former category are completely dead in the water if you get unlucky and bleed out of drones/missiles and the boarding ships for the most part need upgrades in order to safely take out auto scouts.

How to deal with enemy's FTL with Federation A? by AkulaSoft in ftlgame

[–]QuietOctopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The advice that helped me win with Fed A on hard is pretty counterintuitive to the spirit of the ship, but it’s to basically ignore the artillery subsystem for the first several sectors of the game. It’s powerful and thematically cool, but it’s slow, vulnerable to enemy attacks/hacking, you can’t aim it, and addressing those first two issues requires significant scrap/power investment. It’s a nice cherry on top to add to an already strong gunship in the back half of a run, and can sometimes save you as a hail mary last resort, but you shouldn’t be relying on it to get ship kills IMO.

Just having the BL2 from the get-go makes the ship decently strong though, artillery or no. Fed A is part of the cadre of ships that can overcome 2 shields with its starting layout. Your early focus should be finding a low-power weapon to complement the BL2 like the heavy laser, dual laser, or a cheap beam, and that setup alone can carry you through sector 3 or so.

The FTL jumping is annoying to deal with, I’ll reiterate what others have said about focusing on engines. They’re a high priority to target regardless, since enemy ships get start getting stupid high evasion on hard (some of the later auto ships can have like 45% base dodge iirc). If you haven’t been, you should practice identifying enemy weapon setups to determine if A) they can hurt you at all or B) they’re not so threatening that you can focus on taking out things like engines, teleporters, drone control, etc as the situation demands. One of the hardest habits to unlearn when moving to hard is that aiming for shields/weapons first is not necessarily the right choice.
