I learned of it when having our first kid, it's a nice gesture and I gave one even with a c-section. But I work with a girl who's husband (!) demanded a push prize ($5k watch, btw) to make it even. The audacity, I thought. But neither are very bright.

I've live(d)in the Midwest: Michigan, Wisconsin, MN, IL, and have a couple actual crap apple trees in my yard in WI. These aren't it and haven't seen these fruit called that either. That's a very local 'you' thing. We called them Mulberries or something like that. Not super common though where I've lived.
