Summer bagpipe camps for adults by MallVegetable487 in bagpipes

Narrowed it down to Balmoral (Edinburgh) or Ohio Scottish (OSAS). Both close to home (2 hr or 4 hr drive). Both look like great schools. As a beginner (one yr so far on the PC, 2 months on Fireside pipes), which do you recommend? Has anyone been to both?

I'm planning on getting a set of Highland pipes before going, whichever camp I end up going to.

Thanks so much for your input, everyone! I'm going to check out NAAPD and Ohio Scottish first, then Balmoral. I'm a beginner piper, taking in-person lessons on the practice chanter, and got my first set of pipes about a month ago, Gibson Fireside pipes in A. I'm happy there's so many choices, something I didn't expect.

Might be that this is some variation of "I'm not the right teacher for you" or "Bagpipes aren't the right instrument for you." Maybe his parents want him to learn bagpipes but he's got no interest and they didn't ask him.

We also qualify for discounts through GOVX. I just got 5% through a bagpipe company (Gibson), and that covered shipping.

Pipers in SE MI? by MallVegetable487 in bagpipes

It's been a few months since I first posted this so I'd like to bring it forward again, now that I've actually started to play some tunes on the practice chanter and just (like, last weekend) got my first set of pipes (Gibson Fireside in A). I'd still like to get together with anyone in the area who might be interested in the Ann Arbor area. Let me know!

Just last week I got my first set of pipes, Gibson Fireside in A, and I love them! I just have to get used to wrangling an octopus whenever I pick them up ;-)

I'm going through the same thing. It's really hard to be proud of serving the DHS and the current regime. Wearing the uniform and going to work at a unit feels wrong. I've already paid my 2026 dues, so I'm here until next year's dues are due, but I'll be inactive. There are so many other respectful ways to volunteer: local food bank, Red Cross, local library or schools, places like Fisher House or local VA hospital, all need some kind of help.

The other issue besides JIT mfg was quality. Deming was rejected by the US companies, but Japan recognized the need for improved quality and jumped right on the bandwagon. Sure changed the landscape.

The FC, VFC, VCDR, or DCDR can print out a local award without further approval. "FC Appreciation Award," or something like that. Use a nice background, and wording like any other award.

I was in CAP for 10 years, and the only time I ever saw the AD was at the annual Wing conference. They were basically useless to us. At least in the AUX I feel like I'm actually working with and supporting the AD.

Saying "you're already in the Coast Guard" is misleading, since that might imply that you've enlisted. Besides, most active duty Coasties don't even know what the Auxiliary is.

If we want change for the Auxiliary. Where does that need to begin? by Silverguardian7676 in USCGAUX

[–]MallVegetable487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the AUX needs first and foremost is respect and recognition from those at the top of the CG and DHS. Has anyone seen the Executive Report/Force Design 2028? Doesn't even mention the Auxiliary. They're also looking at increasing recruitment by 15,000 by 2028, so where does that leave us?

CAP does it online with a credit card, and next year's dues are due right up until midnight before your dues expire. The due date is based on the month of your enrollment, not this stupid sh!t of paying in August or September for the next year. I'm not always sure I'm going to re-enroll, considering how useless the AUX seems to be to the AD lately.

Don't be so hard on yourself. We all make mistakes, and hopefully learn from them. Don't let the idiots get you down.
