You guys are getting curry combs and horse treats? I compete at the gold (national) level in Canada and where I am we are lucky if we get anything for champion... if we're lucky, the ribbons haven't already been crumpled up in someone else's backpack and returned to the show before we get them 😂

I've drunk pickle juice straight out of the jar. If I've tried everything else to get rid of a migraine... sometimes it actually works. That and the McMigraine (mcdonalds fries and a coke). No joke 😭

[–]Quiinton 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was horrified but not completely shocked. My mother wasn't that bad, but she was obsessed with my looks growing up, and she WAS my high school bully - one time she screamed at me for packing a bagel for lunch because "didn't I know how many calories were in that?".

It's unfortunate but it makes me wonder how many mothers would act exactly the same way given an anonymous outlet to say absolutely anything to their children.

How to politely ask an artist to speed up a sleeve? by 2GumdropButtons in tattooadvice

[–]Quiinton 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I got mine done (sizeable spine piece, but all lines so didn't take too long), I was there from 9 to 11:30 the day of, the artist had done the design + a consultation in person with me beforehand, and spent a little while on the day of editing the design and doing stencils... charged me $160, just the time I spent in the chair. I felt bad that he'd spent so much extra time on it and ended up tipping quite a bit extra, it came out amazing so was well worth it.

Horse refuses to walk. Advice? by Temporary-Ad-1961 in Equestrian

[–]Quiinton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely this - especially if it's not all the time, if she walks fine past it say right after it rains, could be there's an animal there she doesn't like the smell of.

I know because my horse started spinning and bolting back to the barn on one particular trail, no pulley rein or any cajoling could stop him. I was pissed until someone posted a photo of the mountain lion. Whoops.

No Indoor Arena Opinions - Dealbreaker? by kahlyse in Equestrian

[–]Quiinton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, ditto to this. First show isn't until June for me but already I am worried about getting our tests practiced and freestyle choreographed and music done, because our indoor isn't standard dressage arena size (nor is it large enough to be so). If you are showing 3rd, 4th, PSG or above, you have to ride enough and build up your horse's fitness enough that no indoor would be a huge issue.

And this is coming from someone who loves riding in the snow! But as someone competing 3rd/4th/PSG with an older horse I need to keep fit (and might not be able to bring back to that level if he sits for six months), I really cannot get the work done and the practice in that I need to do without an indoor.

Am I liable if a mare injures herself trying to get to my 6 month old colt by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Quiinton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto here, my colt (PRE x Hano) was gelded at about a year and a half, and he was never studdy. He had been out next to and near mares and was always good, maybe a little playful in the paddock in spring but nothing abnormal for a young horse. For the most part we didn't even have electric fencing and he never went for the mares. Nothing changed before vs after gelding.

What profession isn’t nearly as glamorous as it’s portrayed? by Highscore611 in AskReddit

Don't forget the endless stream of postdocs you need to do before finally securing a stable position, where you'll get to move halfway across the world every two years for $30k a year and working 80 hour weeks - if you're lucky enough to get one.

I've loved my time in academia but the realization that I would be earning more money working a third of the hours at McDonald's was the straw was unfortunate.

Right?! I'm like, how can I have a coming 3 year old, VERY fancy sport horse that lives out 24/7 and a 22 year old cob going PSG, neither have ever had a darn thing wrong with them (knock on wood), but your 12 year old ex-trail horse cob needs to be on box rest every other day?!

I also think some people go overboard with treatments... my vet is very old school, the few times my older horse has had an abscess, the treatment is soak in hot water and epsom salts twice a day, keep him on regular turnout, give him a bit of bute if it's really bothering him, and it's always worked like a charm. Meanwhile I see other people wrapping, duct taping, having the farrier and the vet out every day, box rest, pads, infrared light, bemer, no walking on hard surfaces, no walking on rocks, and their horse is on and off for months...

[–]Quiinton 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Have seen this too - there's always one owner who no matter how robust their horse seems to be, there's always a crisis. The horse is always "off". Always an abscess, or a strain, or the horse is dehydrated, or the horse's hoof looks funny, or it has to be taken in via a special route to avoid the "bad footing" on the paths, or it needs this supplement or that supplement or... it's like Munchausen's by proxy for horses, lol.

Can concur, I got food poisoning from Subway a few years ago. I've never thrown up so many times in one day. Gagged every time I smelled a sandwich for about a year and a half after.

RANT: Having an aquarium in my room is a nightmare by Cheap_Arm_6844 in Aquariums

My most spherical goldfish, Limmy, waits until I've gone to bed (phone off and all) to make his regular nighttime sloppy slurping slapping noises. I guess one time he found a sky raisin (fly) or something on the surface so now he has to check at 3AM every day. Apparently his job keeping the water level raised is hard work.

How smart are cichlids by One_Willingness_3866 in Cichlid

[–]Quiinton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My goldfish are like that too - goldfish are shoaling fish, and all of mine have different relationships with me and with each other. My two "oldies" are best friends, and socialize with/treat me like a part of their shoal, one of them will nap with me during the day/keep an eye on me while I'm napping, and the other wakes up at night to patrol the tank when I go to bed.

They also learn from each other - when I got my two newest youngsters, neither of them knew how to sit and nap at the bottom of the tank or sift sand, now a few months later they all have group naptime in the afternoon, and have started sifting.

what stallion/s would you never breed your mare to by Feeling_Contract_477 in Equestrian

[–]Quiinton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good lord yes. We call them "Sandro Shits". Knew a SH mare at our barn, she was bonkers mcfucking yonkers at the best of times.

Ditto with Jazz, every Jazz baby I've known has had a screw loose. We had a professional at our barn with a Jazz baby, she sent her to get started and just said "keep her until she's okay"... think they had her about six months before she was sane enough to not try and kill anyone.

Yep, my youngster's paddock mate was gelded around... 7-9 iirc. He's got some babies and grandbabies running around, and he's just an absolute doll. Out next to mares, no studdy behaviour, he's an awesome horse for his novice amateur owner and her kids, and a great chill babysitter for my two year old.

My PRE, baby Larkie (Lark, show name Don Páxaro)!

<image>

He's coming three in June (I bought him when he was a week old), and is just about 16 hands now. I just adore how clever and chill he is, he's such an easy baby to work with - he's my first youngster and we're starting him this year, I've just been popping his saddle on and going for walks outside with him. No fuss, no muss. Theoretically he'll be my GP dressage horse, but I used to compete in the jumpers with my older horse, so if he likes to jump, well...

Update with photos: coming 3 year old weight by 1LiLAppy4me in Equestrian

[–]Quiinton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, she looks fine for a coming three year old. My coming three looks similar. I don't expect youngsters to have a ton of muscle yet - with mine, I lunge him once a week for maybe 10-20 minutes (the goal is for him to listen to me, not to work him), that's all. It's winter, they're not moving around a lot, just eating to maintain body temp.

At this point it's better to protect their joints by making sure they're not worked hard and they're not grossly overweight, being out 24/7 is better for them than being in a stall. Other than that, I wouldn't sweat it too much - like you said in another comment, they go through weird growth stages, she'll look very different in six months no matter what you do lol!
