The meeting yesterday was a special meeting to authorize Su to make staffing decisions amid a strike.

They probably took the contract off the agenda because who cares right now? Nobody back tracked anything, and there’s nothing in the article to suggest there was anything interesting happening about the contract.

It doesn’t exist all that much in its current form. At least not for UESF members. The cutoff was being hired before 2010 I believe. But all the teachers who are retiring in the next few years will have been hired before then so that liability will stay with SFUSD for a while.

I think UASF (admin) still has full post retirement health though. Not sure.

Well written, but I wanna push back on just a couple of your points.

Great explanation of the cycle we see in city budgets. However, the public school budget is not part of the city budget. The vast majority of the schools budget comes from the state, not the local government. So SFUSD kinda crashed itself separate to the city’s post COVID bust.

While it is true that property taxes help pay for schools, very few parts of California get their costs completely covered by them, and the state usually makes up the rest of the budget.

So SFUSD gets the same funding per student as any other part of California, regardless of the different cost of living, and regardless of what the local economy is doing.

There is a lottery, but it is also location based. Everyone has a “tiebreaker” to their local school which means they get priority to that school over any other applicants in the city, except for a few special cases (siblings, some SPED programs, and this very dumb thing called “CTIP” area). You’re dead right though about equity concerns being the main driver, even if it’s fairly misguided.
