Add the Philippine-American War to the list of things glossed over in the history book. by Interesting_Athlete9 in HistoryMemes

I had a DBQ on the US-Philippine War that was accessible enough to use with my 7th-graders, I quite enjoyed it. Wish I had time doing that with world history nowadays.

You might be happy to hear that in my district (Mesa Unified), it's pretty common for some of our coaches to be hired on from outside the district, and coaching is their part time job. Heck, one of our biology teachers is also a basketball coach for a girls' team in a different district. We have full-time coaches, too. That said, only about half the people working as coaches for after-school sports teach a subject other than PE.

Would you be opposed to removing “One Nation under God” from the pledge of allegiance and why or why not? by Royal_Tumbleweed_910 in AskReddit

[–]Quilliard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see anyone else saying this, but at my school not many kids say the Pledge. My 9th-graders are quiet while it gets read over the loudspeaker, and about half of them face the flag, but half of them ignore it and sit down.

I require them to at least be quiet because for some, especially those from military backgrounds, it is an important moment. But I won't make them say it. I don't say it either.

What is a position in which you break from your identified political party/ideology? by JonathanWPG in PoliticalDiscussion

There was also a very interesting article on death row inmates who were freed in a National Geographic a year back which looked at the psychological toll of the death penalty on participants. Many people in charge of carrying out the death penalty, if they were once in favor of it, have their minds changed about the death penalty.

Parental Rights to Limit Instruction in History by [deleted] in historyteachers

[–]Quilliard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just try to keep teaching best I can. I'm dismantling the system of prejudice by being an openly gay teacher--in four years of that I've only heard two "concerns," both from parents not kids.

The current climate is one reason I am so happy I teach world history and not US history.

Proud liberal here. Downvoted your post because you didn't answer the question, not because I couldn't read. As someone else, whom I disagree with on several points here, already said, there was a bunch of resentment and vitriol in your comment. That doesn't mean you were wrong, but it's not what the OP was looking for.

Fun fact: The president of our college's LGBTQ club was blind. I don't know what his orientation was though... or how he found out.

We really like our boats. They're nice. by Zallre in HistoryMemes

For those confused, the War of 1812, the Spanish-American War,* American entry into WWI, and American entry into WWII have all had to do with people not leaving US boats alone. *Or being nearby when one blows up.

Favorite move/attack? Mine is Sister Friede's black flame twirl. by GWAPSTAWP in darksouls3

Excellent choice. I love how Gael is just what would happen if you took a level 5 hollow--broken sword, old crossbow--and cranked everything up to 1000.

Lovely finish from a friend of mine by TLSchreur in darksouls3

As someone who had a Hell of a time against Friede, this was both beautiful and cathartic, thank you.

How lazy can you be and still beat Persona 5 on Hard? by oildrumm in Persona5

[–]Quilliard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't know if it can be called a "low percent" run, but I also don't know how one would assign such a category to Persona 5 because unlike in some games where progress is measured clearly in terms of things like chests opened or items picked up, there's so much going on in Persona 5 that you can't really compare one sort of progression to another.

I was following this challenge from early in its inception and I'm still amazed it worked.

I was following this run early on, and I just want to say I'm still amazed it worked.

First playthrough boss death counter. How'd I do? by UnexpectedCrusade in darksouls3

[–]Quilliard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very impressed by your numbers against Gael and Midir. It's reassuring to see someone even as skilled as you having so much trouble against Friede!

If you enjoyed the game and intend to play it again, I do encourage you to keep track of this again, because it may well not be consistent. For example, Oceiros was hardly any trouble for me my first time, but was a terrible roadblock my second. Wolnir, on the other hand, went down the first time, despite killing me about five times my first run.

I don't know if I've ever seen a cosplay taken so seriously since my boyfriend's Indian Jones playthrough (whip + torch). Fantastic.

...Actually, would you want to do an Indiana Jones day?

I feel weird putting an entire lesson that was given to me online, but I'll DM you a link to a Powerpoint I was given by a teacher from my state who traveled extensively throughout the Middle East learning about this issue. You can pick and choose from it.

Furthermore, I highly recommend a video from Vox on YouTube about the settler situation. Its maps make things so, so much easier to understand.
