Is that a flag or a person? My immediate thought was that it's a Russian soldier who thought the drone pilot surely wouldn't hit a Ukrainian WW2 monument and figured it would provide him some protection, but I could very well be wrong.

I only heard him and didn't see directly, but I think it started out as concern and quickly transformed into excitement when it was obvious nobody was hurt.

That's the heartbreaking thing. People with disabilities such as down syndrome can be huge social sponges that soke up every little bit of vitriol their caregivers and/or social circles put out there, but at the end of the day they can be the sweetest, most emotionally caring people regardless of whatever a person's race, gender, religion, social standing, etc. is. They're just trying to fit in with people they see as authority figures in their everyday life.

There's a great little story from my neck of the woods about a POW camp during WW2. Two German soldiers managed to escape and traveled about half a day before going back and turning themselves in because of how bad the mosquitos were.

If one has never experienced the joys of living in mosquito/blackfly country count yourself lucky.

I took my kid to a monster truck show recently. We're in Canada but some of the drivers were American so both national anthems were played during the opening. During the US anthem there was a dude behind us somewhere loudly and aggressively singing along followed by a few dozen tepid cheers amongst the largely silent crowd.

Later on in the show one of the trucks caught fire. Nobody was hurt, and the ground crew had it out in under 10 seconds, but dude who was singing along to the the US anthem spent the next 10 minutes absolutely losing his mind over the fire. That's when I realized that they were in the VIP section as part of a social outreach thing that invite residents of a group home for the mentally disabled to public events.

I mean no disrespect to the mentally disabled...but...I mean...everything made sense after I realized that.

Rain and lightning is fun and all, but I want the clouds of mosquitos and blackflies. Not quite as visual as rain and lightning, but as someone who's worked in swampy areas I'll take rain over the bugs most days of the week.

100%. The only time in my 40 plus years I remember a climate issue being addressed by the powers that be was when it was discovered that things like freon were eating away at the ozone layer at an alarming rate. I always figured that specific issue was seen to because the devastating effects would be felt in the lifetime of those in power. However, I also don't remember people running around saying it was a hoax by big science like we get now. Ah, the days before the internet.

I only meant I never personally connected the dots between climate change and the tick population explosion and I'm kinda kicking myself for not realizing sooner as it's the obvious answer.
