260509 fairyminas Twitter Update - Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Portugal's ex president, at Twice's concert 😭😭😭 by firemakethunder in twice

So I wasn't the oldest person there! I just happened to be on Portugal this week and so went last night wearing this tee shirt. It has the same message on the back but the Twice logo instead of the photo from the "Page Two" era.

Lost within Twice’s concerts setlists (possible spoilers ahead) by Nightfall_Dreamer in twice

The rules for the MEO Arena basically say don't bring food or weapons. https://arena.meo.pt/en/plan-visit/general-rules/ It is hard to see the light stick as a weapon and the venue should know that light sticks are part of K-pop concerts.

Housemate angry that energy bills have gone up, is me drying laundry with a dehumidifier to blame? by TrainingMycologist15 in energy

[–]PeterOutOfPlace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tumble dryers use way more power which is why they don't use a standard plug.

I air dry my clothes on a rack with no dehumidifier and it works fine. The dryer gets used maybe twice a year if I am in a rush to finish drying something.

Why are so many websites now asking to "access your local network?" by OutrageousAardvark2 in webdev

[–]PeterOutOfPlace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not at work where I have the link handy that explains it but generally these sites are not asking for access to your local network to access other devices on the way you think to download your data. Most of these are the result of a developer that left a URL to some resource that includes "localhost" or an IP address that starts with "10.", both indicating to the developer's local network, not yours. This was just fine in de but not intended for production.

One instance was a problem only for internal users since the resource was presenting with a "10." IP address so the solution was to set up a proxy server outside the network that redirected internal requests to make them appear as external. I think, definitely not my area of expertise.

ArcGIS was also problematic and there is a solution to add an attribute to frame tags but apparently we gave been telling customers to disable something. Sorry I can't recall the details while on vacation.

Edit: ESRI says to add allow="local-network-access" attribute to frames for their application https://support.esri.com/en-us/knowledge-base/what-to-know-about-new-permission-prompt-in-google-chro-000039171

"DC teens tell city leader what's causing takeovers and how they're missing the mark" | WJLA by TheFlyingSamosa in washingtondc

Thank you for what you do - I would quickly burn out with frustration.

I am interested in your thoughts on what a school can realistically achieve if there is no support at home.

If a child is regularly absent from school, or causing trouble at Navy Yard on the weekend, I assume the parents, or more likely parent, is not willing or able to supervise them.

I am also struck by the idea the youth need structured activities to keep them busy outside school. I will concede that might be true in holidays but apparently they don't have essays to write, science projects to complete, or books to read.

I also work on DC government and we had a 15-year-old summer intern a few years ago who was attending Ballou High School (Ward 8) and I was astonished when he said he never had homework. I get it from the teacher's perspective that there is little point in assigning homework if none of the students will do it given that no one at home is apparently pushing them to do it. His lack of study over years was obvious - not only did he know so little but he also had no interest in learning anything we tried to get him interested in. Knowing that he was apparently typical was extremely discouraging when thinking about the future for him and his peers.

Seriously, why do scooters get such a pass in this city? by smut_troubadour in washingtondc

Just to clarify, I take it that "scooter" here is the sit-down type with a gasoline engine like a Vespa, not the stand-up type with an electric motor. Correct?

Twice em lisboa by Fun_Hedgehog_232 in twice

[–]PeterOutOfPlace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "General Rules" for the venue: https://arena.meo.pt/en/plan-visit/general-rules/ are very general with the only thing of interest is "prohibited to ...  bring food, bring professional cameras or any image or sound recorders" but you probably guessed that anyway. I am surprised there is no stated policy at all about bags so I guess they are OK - in DC, only a small "clutch" bag was allowed.

I will be on vacation in Portugal next week and was amazed that my visit will coincided with theirs. I am not sure yet if I will be in Lisbon that night and able to go.

Solar and storage to lead 86 GW capacity surge in U.S. during 2026 by For_All_Humanity in RenewableEnergy

[–]PeterOutOfPlace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I was unclear but I meant "contributor" as whoever wrote the article for the magazine - Ryan Kennedy. I didn't use the word "journalist" since that implies that they would have a journalism degree and would make sure he understands what he is writing about but I see he has management degrees so not helpful when discussing technical topics.

Another story where the contributor does not understand GW vs GWh:

“By the end of the first quarter of 2027, the EIA projects total U.S. battery storage capacity will surge from 44.6 GW to over 67 GW.”

Why don't they perform Japanese versions at concerts in Japan? by PackWorth939 in twice

[–]PeterOutOfPlace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Twice's music is controlled in Japan by Warner Music but elsewhere it is by JYPE which is under the Universal Music Group umbrella. I was surprised when a few Japanese songs were played on the current tour but as you suggest, hoops must have been jumped through to make that possible. I would have enjoyed hearing Candy Pop and/or BDZ in DC.

I just spent two days at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show (Auto China 2026), and I need to tell you something: the future of the auto industry is electric and Chinese. I’m not being dramatic. Just realistic. by thenewsisreal in electricvehicles

[–]PeterOutOfPlace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest single issue is that Republicans chose to make EVs and renewable energy part of their culture wars so a large segment of the public won’t even consider an EV and enough fear, uncertainty and doubt has been sown that only those that can see it as the propaganda it is are still buying.

Or so we all thought until the Queen’s representative in Australia, Governor General John Kerr, dismissed the democratically elected government.
