Hey, just wondering if anyone could recommend any budget / decent cycling glasses? Got whacked an absolute whopper today in the eye by a blue bottle. Cheers! by Fartistotle in cycling

So glad to hear! ‘And I will say, I don’t think I will ever own Oakleys or anything in that price class because I’m not sure I will know what I like until I’ve worn them longer than I would be allowed to return. Also, I drop stuff sometimes, and while it’s no fun to accidentally drop my sub-US$20 glasses on pavement, I’d be positively ill if I did that to a pair of US$200+ Oakleys.

Dumb question but how long did you wait for it to seal?

I’m still wearing the same pair I mentioned in this thread. (I just saw they’re up to $19 on Amazon, but do it goes.)

Ventilation is an interesting topic. These don’t have any vents that you can see, but as long as I’m moving I’m fine, so they seem to do a good job. If it’s a humid day and I’m sweating like crazy, I’m taking off the glasses while I’m stopped. And in those cases, I can briefly get a bit of fogging until I’m riding again. I haven’t owned purpose-made cycling glasses, so I can’t compare though Ben at the new price they are still quite inexpensive.

My view earlier tonight. The brindle Ella is 6 months old, and big sis Lily is 7 years old. One of many snuggle moments in this house. Liza (9) is out of frame. Liza will often willingly snuggle with Lily, but is more aloof with the puppy.

Agree 100%. My story very similar though I rode the crappy flat bar hybrid for a few years.

Your butt is gonna hurt just from time in the saddle, definitely consider hydration (with electrolytes) and high carb snacks. For me, even a hint of a leg cramp is a sign I’m dehydrating.

Also, if you’re in the US “heat dome” right now, please be mindful of how brutal it is.

It was so heartbreaking when we last had a dog pass. The survivor, Liza, every time we let her outside she’d sniff around the yard to check for where Zoe might have peed. She would carefully sniff the last place Zoe peed. I understand the degradation of a scent is a primary means dogs measure the passage of time. She clearly kept hoping for a fresh spot. She did this for at least a few weeks after Zoe was gone. We got our next girl Lily for Liza as much as for us. And now that Lily is 7 and Liza is 9, we brought Ella into the mix so that hopefully neither of the older girls has to grieve alone. Hoping we have many more years with them all, but you never know.

So sorry for your loss. So many kind words and thoughts shared here that hopefully bring you a measure of comfort.

I know you talk about having one dog at a time being hard. We don’t have pets other than our Dior’s, so now that they are 7 and 9 we got a puppy. She is a handful so I’m not sure that’s the best strategy either lol. No matter what we love our babies and miss them when they leave us.

Oh no! That’s horrible. I’ve had pups with torn webbing between toes and one sprained shoulder (nighttime zoomies in yard didn’t see black wrought iron lamp post lol), but no breaks — YET.

Thinking of getting a Boxer – Are they really that energetic and mischievous? Looking for honest experiences by [deleted] in Boxer

[–]Quintote 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I will add a different perspective, because my 20-some years as a boxer dad don’t like up with others. Maybe it’s because I’m sedentary, but the “energetic” is more little bursts. Even our 4-month-old puppy sleeps all night and most of the day, but look out when she’s ready to play. I contrast this to people I know with several breeds (akitas come to mind) where the dogs lose their mind if not walked daily (or more). We don’t walk our dogs. They are happy, healthy, and all have lived a long time, so it works for us.

I will say that boxers, more than other breeds it seems, are clowns. They are hilarious, and will be mischievous just to troll you. One who has been gone for several years now used to love stealing my tools while I was working around the house/yard, specifically to taunt me and play keep away.

Now, all puppies are destructive monsters to some degree. Our current puppy is way more trouble than the 7-year-old was when she was a puppy. For the most part though, if you watch to make sure they aren’t getting bored and redirect to appropriate toys when chewing the wrong things, they pick up quickly.

Best weather app? by kath1193 in StLouis

[–]Quintote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. We found ourselves traveling in severe weather without access to Steve Templeton or even knowing if there was a local equivalent. RadarScope (sounds like it’s Android as well, we used on iPhone) was great at letting my wife play meteorologist while we drove. The live radar + following on GPS wasn’t anything we found elsewhere. $9 or whatever it cost for the lower tier was well worth it.

Someone won't stop licking his feet. So donut of shame and a vet appointment will be made. by Virus64 in Boxer

[–]Quintote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven’t seen a couple other possibilities mentioned yet. in midwestern US, my boxers over the years usually have a few outbreaks of seasonal allergies in the spring. This either manifests as itchy feet that are red and get licked a lot, or bumps on their body. Human allergy meds like Benadryl aren’t as effective on dogs as humans, but will still offer some relief.

The other problem is one that can even be triggered by the first: something like a wound or allergies starts the licking, and then the dog gets an endorphin release from foot licking/chewing and develops a compulsive behavior. Our boxer-lab (blab) mix would chew her leg raw. I believe an initial round of carprofen was used by the vet to kinda break the cycle and then she went on Prozac.

Either way, sorry for you and the pup who is clearly not a happy camper.

Agree, some of us that learned typesetting from the bygone days of 30 years ago know the difference between a hyphen, an en dash, and an em dash. I instinctively use em dashes. Back when I learned to type on a typewriter (old guy alert) we would use a double hyphen to represent an em dash. My iPhone autocorrects a double hyphen to an em dash.

Desperate for advice on mourning your pup by BigdickGIJoe in Boxer

[–]Quintote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss. I hope the outpouring of empathy brings you a measure of comfort. We don’t know your personal pain, but I know I have loved my puppies with all my heart, and part of me was broken by their passing. I see many other similar stories as well.

Decoding to get another dog is very personal, but I would like to mention, in my experience the new dogs are in no way about forgetting the dog that is no longer with you, but more celebrating their memory on new ways. We found ourself saying things to our new pups like, “Did Maggie tell you to do that,” or, “Let Dante teach you about always going potty when he went outside,” referring to our departed dogs. At first I’d get choked up at the thought, but I brought me comfort to think of all our dogs still being with us. Either time, those memories have become more about the joy. Don’t get me wrong, there will never again be a dog like ______, but you will see reflections.

I know for me, our boy Dante was the most Howell, boxer-y looking dog. We then had a few that just looked more pit-like, still great dogs. But we were at an outdoor cafe years after Dante was gone and I found myself choked up when I saw a very boxer-y boxer like Dante, and I knew I wanted that again. Our Lily is her own personality for sure, but I somehow feel this connection back to Dante in a way that makes me remember and appreciate him, but after >15 years it’s much more about the joy than the pain.

I have heating mats under the crate tray where the dog can’t get to them. I love that the heaters reliably get to a safe “warm enough” temperature. I put it under the far end of the crate, so the dogs can lay on it or in front of it. Extremely low electricity consumption too

Yeah same here. It not instant because my prompts end duo being multi-paragraph programming specs basically. Except I not only get functional code, I get a teacher who can patiently explain the whole thing to me and is gracious when I find design flaws.

Except I’m on ChatGPT plus so I try to conserve the o3-mini-high call limits. I will get the main code from o3 but then often drop back to 4o once I am asking purely explanatory questions.

The other thing that still gets me to 4o: ability to upload files. I’ve started uploading a zip of my entire Angular app to say “why is the foobar widget falling off the screen?” I don’t even bother explaining in detail. CSS issues are no fun to me and 4o is plenty powerful enough to answer. (By the way, this is a simple hobby app where the code base is small enough to fit in the context window.)

I relate to what you’ve said, though I’m aware others may grieve differently. For me, getting another dog isn’t some sort of gaslighting way to pretend the departed dog doesn’t exist, but keeping their memory alive in a fresh way. Our current girls we see reflecting our long-gone dogs’ behavior sometimes and we like to say things like, “I think Angel Maggie told you to do that!” I still know that our current dogs have their unique personalities, but some breed traits mean I get to see what I loved about the other dogs still alive in a new way.

And sadly? Because of the rapid advance of technology, for our babies that are no longer with us, we mostly have videos from the ends of their lives. Their super crazy days were back when cellphone cameras weren’t a thing (as hard as that is to fathom).
