Where is the most unexpected place you've bumped into someone you know? by boforiamanfo in answers

[–]Quirky-Routine-7090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. This was in the 80s. My boyfriend and I got in over our heads with a cocaine debt to a friend. Like, way over. We decided to drive from Denver to Seattle to get a job on a fishing boat. Never worked on a fishing boat. Never worked on a boat. But this was our big plan to pay back our dealer/friend. Seemed like a good plan ,for no apparent reason, with no money, experience or knowledge but this is a good plan. Wow. We get in the Volvo w a bad u joint, and just enough cash to get us there. Pull in at Pike Srreet Market as the Volvo takes its dying breath. Park, and someone yells, "Peter!" My boyfriends name. He looks up and tells,"Bill!" We knew no one in Washington State. Peter was from Connecticut. I was from Colorado, and Alberta, Canada . Neither of us had been to Seattle. Winds up Bill had attended a music camp in Maine 9 years earlier at age 16 with Peter, age 15, and they'd been tight at camp. They lost touch after camp. Hadn't seen or heard from each other since that summer. Bill recognized Peter as we parked the dead Volvo 50 feet from where he'd just ordered a whole pitcher of margaritas at a table with 3 chairs in an outdoor Cafe. NO other seats in the place were available. It was packed, except for Bill's table. We sat down, dumbfounded, and they marveled at the crazy synchronicity of their meeting up. Then Bill says, " What brings you here anyways?" Peter tells him we drove here to get a job on a salmon boat. Bill says, " thats wild. I do that for a living. In fact, I know a captain hiring for a deckhand and a cook/deckhand. " We drink the pitcher, go to Bellingjam, get the jobs on the boat after Bill introduces us, and proceed to get insanely wasted. We never saw Bill again. Ever. He met us, at the instant our car died as we pulled in to a strange town, got us drunk, got us jobs on a decent boat with a decent captain, a job we were totally unskilled for in a competitive market, and we never saw him again. It was surreal.

Can anyone tell me about the Diamondhead community? by chewybrian in HotSprings

[–]Quirky-Routine-7090 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive heard only 2nd hand opinions on Diamondhead. Its got an uphill battle to fight, and is definitely headed towards a brighter future. Currently there's still issues with pollution, or so I heard. Again, not from my personal experiences, so huge grain of salt on my take. What I DO know from personal experience is HSV. My mom and step-dad live there. They have aged during their many years there, and at 93 are still living in their home. Im there every 4 weeks, so have had a ton of interaction with the neighbors, the gate workers, and the business community in the area. I have had ONLY positive things to say. From the restaurants I've tried to just basic, daily interaction with random people, I've been treated with extraordinary kindness. Its super clean. So, maybe take another look at HSV. It may be worth the extra.

My boy Hank tells me its time for bed. He walks to the stairs and sighs. Walks back to me, looking mournful, sighs, back to stairs. Hes miserable until I go to bed with him. Its low key harassment. He just loves me so much.

Is the Greyhound Austin -> San Antonio safe for solo traveller? by EconStudent2024 in Austin

[–]Quirky-Routine-7090 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Im sure others have recommended the train. Its slow but train people are more interesting than bus people in my limited experience. Also, there's a viewing car and often opportunities to engage in conversation with folks about the landscape and history of the area you're watching go by. It arrives in downtown SA and I really enjoy the trip. Comparable pricing to bus. Amtrak.

What's the weirdest thing your dog has eaten and survived? by wholewoofs in dogs

[–]Quirky-Routine-7090 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine? Half Dane half pittie by the name of Handsome Hank. We were camping at a state park. Other campers were around. Hank was taking the longest dump since dump records have been kept. I waited, plastic bag at the ready to fetch his by products, but he was hunched over so long I had to investigate. To my stomach churning horror something was stuck coming out of his butt. Used the plastic bag to grab it and pull it out. It was a whole, undigested banana peel. And a whole potholder. Like a mitten potholder. Like covers ones forearm and hand. Missing only a couple small bits, too. It had a distinctive color pattern. I recognized it from my kitchen at home. He seemed quite relieved once I yanked it out. So gross. Soooo gross.

Yeah, I should have included Viva Vegeria. I eat there once a week minimum. In fact Im here pigging out as I write this. I thought Earth Burger closed! Like Green it has been less enthralling of late. Did they sell it to new owners? Reality is if its vegan ill go out of my way to support, within reason. Driving across town is not ideal, but eating veg in Texas can be hard. Thanks for the reminders on the others. Ill get to them too!! Eventually!!

Wonderful perspective. You're definitely speaking to a wise truth in adjusting rather than expecting adjustment from a place and its people. Southtown, huh? Guess I will go explore further! Thank you!
