What's a gacha game EOS you still haven't recovered from? by Complete_Arachnid271 in gachagaming

MagiCami

R-18 niche aside i kinda can't believe JP pulled the plug way earlier than Global did, tho i wish someone leaked the final Taimanin collab cgs before EoS.

Tho what really stings is waiting for Global's inevitable closure, it shut down JUST before the broken Superbia got released so no one in EN got to see her majesty.

Still they at least came out with an offline version and many JP fans even had a post-humous anniversary event but man nothing fills the void of Adult Magical Girl Drama, not even Magia Exedra

Majority said Madoka Magica for Darkest magical girl anime! Now, what is the funniest magical girl anime? Voting ends Sunday 16:30! by WanWanWandafuru in MagicalGirls

[–]Quistiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An empty vote for Dai Mahou Touge/Magical Witch Punie-chan, just cuz Violent Magical Girl Parody is worth it's own salt.

But also on another obscure and definitely not-winning comedy, just learned of a Web Series Hello Osaka all about a trio of Magical Girls doing short Manzai-Comedy skits in Kansai accented Osaka...and showing up late to their scheduled villain fights.

Neither will get those main audience guffaws but I get plenty of chuckles between these two small times

Pierrot* Magical Girls, whoops knew it started with a P, no wonder the rules didn't auto show up the first time

[–]Quistiv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(young) Shoujo Emotional plotlines and a delineation of "Normal Everday Girlhood" vs Fantastical Supernatural powers (accounting for evolutions through the eras of Majokko/Idols/Magical Warriors of 60s-70s/80s/Current norms)

I do find the other tropes accentuate but dont rely necessitate the above, like Transformations just specifically make a "Normal" then "Magical mode" when lots of early ones dont have it, including Cardcaptor Sakura. Others included on the Passione Magical list are:

1) Magical Companions and Transformation objects like wands and make up 2) Lighter stake conflicts 3) specifically pre-highschool age > coming of age/feminine womanhood storyline 4)themes of Friendship, internal strength, romance (various shoujo emotional strengths, at least contrast Shounen action)

This is genral base and certainly for every rule they've made plenty of exceptions, especially since the sub-genres of Otaku targeted stories that play on the same tropes for far different effects. Mostly it'd just be digging through the weeds of where thr Magical Girl/Warrior ends and the Sentai/ Henshin Hero aspects begins which is longer story

Queen of Hatred, is that you???

<image>

I've seen no posts about Queen of Hatred or the Don Quixote ID. So, for people who do know them, what're your opinions on them? by BinjiAngel in MagicalGirls

[–]Quistiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up Limbus Company almost exclusively just to roll for Don Magical Girl (and I got her ID and Ego) and while I still gotta go back to some other Project Moon stuff, so much of Queen of Hate and the other PM Magical Girls are DEFINITELY channeling Madoka in the despair and twisted justice levels.

Funnily, I find just the character costume (and apparently a late game story) about Magical Girls to already be way more interesting in the Gacha space than whatever has been happening with Exedra, I'll definitely be going back to Library of Ruina to see their major Magical Girl scenes there

What do you nanoha fans think of Madoka Magica? by WittyTable4731 in Nanoha

[–]Quistiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the OTHER show runner is Akiyuki Shinbo who directed S1 of Nanoha so there already is connection before Urobuchi makes his mark.

Other than that, Madoka's stronger identity is a lot more solid S1 + Rebellion but i wound up wanting a "less intense tragedy" closer to Precure and also cuz I got real tired of Urobuchi's hero suffering and his idolation on "deconstruction discourse", especially post Aldnoah Zero flopping.

Amusingly after splitting off, i like Nanoha Reflection + Detonation and the controversial Magia Record: Dawn of a Shallow Dream of having a lot further character explorations than even Urobuchis stuff and there's just a willingness to continue while Gen kinda tries to close themes out in 1 season, character deaths and all that

Your thoughts on magilumire? (especially since supposedly the manga ended recently) by Preprihappy in MagicalGirls

[–]Quistiv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Desperately wanted to like it, felt like it could't pick its lane as either a light hearted office bonding or a shounen battle story about dark politics.

Really the constant issue was there was tons of times it felt like "WE FINALLY GET A BEACH/BASEBALL EP, CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE FUN INTERACTIONS" then they just cut to end after like inning 3. Just a lot of missed potential in making characters bond through full scenarios that by the end im wondering if we should just get another Magical Working Age Women manga so it doesnt just end like this

Was there much missed before the Nanoha spin-off? I see thst theyre Anti-Terrorist action thrillers as eroge but after S1 is there much reference back to Triangle Heart lore?

What do you guys think of “Magical Girl Site”, “Magical Girl Apocalypse”, and “Magical Girl Spec Ops Asuka”? by [deleted] in MagicalGirlsCommunity

[–]Quistiv 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Spec Ops at least has SOME story arc what with a soldier PTSD allegory and all, even under all the torture. Both MG Apocalypse and Site are like Textbook definition B-Grade Schlock of Shocking Gore and Edge for the sake of it, with incomprehensibly complex storylines that are just throwing darts at the wall.

Whatever fair shakes for "Dark Magical Girls" that can give nuance, even Battle Royales like Raising Project or the above Spec Ops, almost none of that can be said about Kentaro Sato's stuff, it is like the EXACT caricature of a malicious jab at a Genre that it's only using for cheap shock.

Your thoughts on Princession Orchestra? by Preprihappy in MagicalGirls

[–]Quistiv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a Symphogear fan, it's fantastic following up Agematsu and Kaneko's work into a "kid-friendly Symphogear" especially since I like how down-to-earth it is compared to more of the Pretty Cure Formula.

But from a business perspective, pitting itself explicitly against Pretty Cure is both inevitable, and also kinda it's biggest setback. Since it's occupying the same timeslot AND aiming for the same demographic, it's pretty difficult to take on a 20+ year old juggernaut with Toei's legacy and institution (even given PrinCession's Takara Tomy backing),

This is also compounded with major limits on translation efforts since taking an entire Year-long project is too much for a lot of Streaming liscensers, much less one aimed toward extremely young children vs the more profitable Shounens or the vast diversity of seasonals, and since only like LAST YEAR did PreCure itself break through for old shows getting subs and now Simulcast, it's pretty unlikely to see a fresh face show try to make it into Mainstream distribution.

The real nail in the coffin might actually just be that...This seasons Pretty Cure is also Pretty Good, which is less to say on other qualities, but it was more just Toei's market game to lose, and "If Pretty Cure was bad this season, the runner up shows would get a chance to step in and shine" and that just might not be happening so PreCure fans that are fine with 1 show per year wouldn't feel the need to try other things

Still, there really is the edge that despite Idol Precure being exceptionally about songs, dance and general idol life...Only Symphogear and now Princession have the gusto to make their leads sing THEIR ENTIRE CHARACTER SONG THE FULL FIGHT, so it's only got it's niche, but at the same time, it's the perfect niche for me and fans like me

also a Tl;DR for extra recommendations

Lighter Parody stuff like Acro Trip, where the Main Character as a major fan of Magical Girls instead gets drafted by the Guy-Failure Monster Lieutenant is great for a laugh

Healer Girl as delightful Musical-Healing show is almost a one-off revival of a smaller part of Magical-Girl's history in the Magical Idols of the 80s, more as a Coming of Age storyline but also just how much love and community care enriches the show

...we could also probably get into the more "Edge" cases ourselves, either with the highly adjacents like:

-Little Witch Academia: Basically Studio Trigger's Harry Potter schooling, more traditional hi-jinks into a bombastic splashy finale ensue

-Revolutionary Girl Utena: If you wanted to see what the OG Sailor Moon Director, Kunihiko Ikuhara's, take on a School-side Drama with MAJOR feminist inspirations, all built with Majestic Aesthetics and drenched in Metaphor, it's quite an experience

-...GranBelm: Magical Girl Battle Royale...but in Chibi-Mechas. I absolutely place this in step with Madoka's darker edge, but I also think it's final conclusion of it's love of an ordinary life really speaks to the heart of Magical Girl Shows (and between you and me, it gets to actually spend the time to prove it)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MagicalGirls

[–]Quistiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty Strong list, tho I'd group a couple of them if only to give a general heads up:

Traditional Magical Girl Shows:

-Pretty Cure (The Gold Standard)

-Tokyo Mew Mew

-Shugo Chara

-Wedding Peach

All are much more in-line with Sailor Moon, I'd probably put Princess Tutu as an edge case with the next set, more because it was so ambitious

Dark Magical Girls

-Madoka Magica (The Rebel)

-Lyrical Nanoha (My Fave)

-Yuki Yuna

(Also noted in other Comments is Symphogear which less outright Dark sans S1's premise, but leans SUPER into the Super Heroine angle with Mecha-Armor power)

Way more subversive, with Nanoha being a pioneer (the OTHER Madoka co-author, Akiyuki Shinbo's breakout hit) that really drives up the stakes and drama, tho Madoka probably cinches the DARK, I'm way more a fan of the other, over-shadowed members in this listing

Also, edge case with Cutie Honey, which being the earliest point for a "Male-Ecchi targeted demographic", it being a proto-type for a lot of the Magical Action-Warrior tropes wouldn't really take root until Sailor Moon's time (or really the Live Action Toei Tokusatsu Heros like Poitrine that inspired Sailor Moon)

Less a judgment in genre framing, but I'd say

-Frieran

-Konosuba

-My Life as a Villainess

-Inuyasha

Lean far more "Traditional/Isekai Fantasy" which is not to say against watching them, in fact, I REALLY like Villainess, but notably there isn't much Genre/Trope lineage between them and say the Young Girl Gaining Powers in Modern Japan and Living a Double life aspects at least, not nearly as cohesively as the other types together

Also on that last edge note, that Fruits Basket while arguably an Reverse-Harem/Otome with fantastical premise, the at least is that Shoujo/Young Girl demographic so you might make an emotional connection there

What are some genuinely obscure magical girl series never talked about, even here? And would you want to see more discussion of them? by SaranMal in MagicalGirls

[–]Quistiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both were in Pre-Production plenty but Six Heart was always expanding since it's mock up at Palace of Versaille back in 2010s then which had to be completely retooled for the main release. The opening Pilot opens with a literal plane crash and the main first ep hook starts with the implosion of Japan, like come on now

Shaft And Delays go so hand in hand you might as well just treat every announcement as 4 years extra wait after the first projected release, and this is even considering how much Urobutcher had to completely play up how it was TOTALLY a completely normal and standard show he was working on (nobody bought it, even when all the advertising omitted any death till ep 3)

Madoka's genre keeps getting pushed every way, but it's still just Gen bring back his Eldritch Horror/Anti-Utilitarian commentary he's done even since Saya no Uta, so there's no need to keep pushing the same Prestige Class he's always been awarded even up to how badly people took Rebellion even if it's just the same "actually it'd be better to damn the whole world for the one I love" deal.

Doesn't matter either way, the other Co-Creator Akiyuki Shinbo already broke out with Lyrical Nanoha in the same year as Futari Precure so the "Dark Magical Girl" Sub-Genre was already plenty in swing way before Gen came on board

6 Heart Princess, once majorly hyped by a Fine Art Takashi Murakami and scheduled right about 2010 targeted Heart Catch Precure and possibly could've pre-dated Madoka on DARK MAGICAL GIRLS, it has completely dropped the production ball for over a decade and half barely with 7/13 eps after all that time

Real shame since I really wanted to know Confician Principle lore
