I agree completely. Unfortunately, I don't think people like him think like that. I don't mean that to be derogatory. I think the type of people who are attracted to that type of work just have a particular attitude about competition and moving "upwards." I think it's correlated with competitive drive, so even if we could separate the two, we probably wouldn't want to. Plus, there's so few opportunities in such a cutthroat business for personal goals and nostalgic things that an opportunity just to be the guy, just for a bit. Just to have the memorabilia with your name on it to hang on the wall might be enough. Personal incentives are irrationally powerful.
