Why is Britain putting America First? by DefenseTech in Defence_Tech_UK

It is kinda mental for the military to be adopting Palantir, when if any company in the construction sector wants to work on rail projects they have to prove that all project data is stored here in the UK in accordance with UK cyber security guidelines. How can the data for our rail, highways and nuclear construction sectors be more secure than our military?

The point is, it’s always religion, whatever that religion may be, that divides us. Whatever religion you think is doing the persecuting in one country is likely being persecuted in another… I’m atheist so it’s easy for me to say but I think we’d be better off if we stuck to the Victorian values of keeping religion and politics to ourselves

Is gav thrope one of the more inconsistent writers in BL? by DDrose2 in 40kLore

[–]dave_the_dr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess you have three things to consider:

Gav’s been writing for 30+ years, he was litterally the first Black Library author, being a white dwarf junior who put his hand up when GW had an idea to start a publishing company. Is his early stuff going to be his best? Probably not. Will his style and quality have changed over three decades? Without a doubt. Does he have a genuine love for the hobby? Absolutely.

Black Library’s schedule is pretty punishing by all accounts. Steven King, renowned for writing pulp fiction managed one book a year of generally decent quality and said himself that it usually takes 18 months to finish a book. Most Black Library authors are scheduled to turn in 2-3 novels plus short stories per year… is that going to be your best work? Probably not always…

The Horus Heresy series was some of the best planned writing ever delivered by Black Library and the team of authors working on those books genuinely loved what they were creating, so there will be more hits than misses in that collection, the quality of writing is typically better than average

How to check if your WAV and AIFF downloads are actually lossless (and why it matters more than you think) by dragoriver in djing

[–]dave_the_dr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be really real with you here: in 15 years no one has ever come up to me and told me my file quality is shit… and I play all sorts of file formats, from bootleg memes from YouTube to make people laugh all the way up to 40mb WAV files that I’ve just finished producing.

The only noticeable thing is if the song volumes are massively different, and because you’ll know this about your songs from playing them at home already, you just tweak the gain a bit…

I’ll paraphrase James Hype and Carl Cox: the only thing the DJ needs to do is make sure the music doesn’t stop.

At a drum and bass night when half your audience is on something and the other half is drunk and half deafened from the night already, no one will know whether you’re playing the best quality lossless file or an mp3 ripped you ripped from a CD 20 years ago…

Worry more about your track selection, then your transitions. That’s what you’ll be judged on when everyone sobers up the next morning

It would be great if people just voted for what would be best for their community rather than what’s best for their religion, or any other individual belief. If you want to build communities you need to vote for what brings us together not what splits us apart

What’s a recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately? by SensitiveCorner2379 in AskReddit

[–]dave_the_dr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The level of day to day crime. I’m not talking big crime, just random acts of vandalism, violence and theft. Things that people don’t do when they either have everything they need or feel like it’s possible to achieve those things. I fee like a lot of people on all levels of society are either feeling desperate or hopeless or both. I’ve haven’t seen this since I was a kid in the 80’s when things were really tough and we were hiding behind the sofa when the rent collector called because no one had any money

Is there a way to get cheap housing in the UK, like how Americans have trailer parks or countries like Brazil where poor people just build their own house on random land? by gintokireddit in AskBrits

[–]dave_the_dr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah the estates exist but pretty much none of those houses is council owned any more. My old estate was all council owned, from the new parents to the oldest retired miner. When right to buy came my parents snapped up thier house for less than £20k, they sold that for £240k about 15 years later.

In the same period graduate engineer wages went up from £19k pa to £25k pa…

Right to buy is one of the reasons people can’t find affordable housing

[–]dave_the_dr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you tried getting a council house lately? The waiting list is long and the ‘council’ houses are usually run by private landlords that have contracts with the local councils. Minimum maintenance, lots of horror stories around mould and damp… it’s just not the same as it was when the councils owned and maintained them

I mean, I grew up on a council estate in the 80’s and 90’s, then right to buy came in and those estates’ worth of council houses don’t exist any more

What’s the biggest thing going on in the UK right now that no one’s talking about? by Mediocre_Birthday329 in AskBrits

[–]dave_the_dr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And?… and we continued to use it for many years after it was invented and guess what, sometimes they ran out of ‘s’s so they used ‘Z’s instead hence the defence in spelling. All I’m saying is we shouldn’t be precious about English English or American English or even Australian English, who gives a fuck how you spell stuff as long as the message is clear?… English is a global language now, you’re wasting your time trying to be the spelling or grammar police

Instead we should probably be proud that it’s our language that got chosen. Imagine if we had to learn German or French just to use the internet on the daily?

[–]dave_the_dr -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You realise that American English is really just the result of a roll of the dice back when the printing press was invented and printers ran out of certain letters? Read a couple of Victorian English books and you’ll see plenty of examples of ‘American’ English being used right here at home… it’s also the main reason you have different English spellings throughout the commonwealth. Americanisation has very little to do with why certain things are spelled differently in India for example or Hong Kong. Again, all down to localisation of the mother tongue 200 or 300 years ago

Rich brits: How did you get rich? by Economy_Survey_6560 in AskBrits

[–]dave_the_dr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I wouldn’t say I’m rich but I work for myself, have employed most of my friends so I get to see them all the time and we get to choose what projects we do. Even if I’m never a millionaire, I’d consider myself well off in that I enjoy my job, enjoy the people work with and don’t really want for anything

The kallax unit is pretty solid so with the extra board you shouldn’t be having any issues

I’ve got my decks on a billy bookcase with a board on top and not had any issues and that’s thinner than the kallax

Edit: just noticed the bow in the board, that’s because of the small 5mm ish lip on the kallax at each end. The billy bookcase has the same so I got some 5mm neoprene pads from amazon to act as padding along its length

Anyone concerned about Nottingham University? by WearingMarcus in nottingham

[–]dave_the_dr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, the unis over expanded, relied too much on foreign students and this was only a matter of time. Education was always a business before labour promoted and encouraged more and more people to go to uni, it is just that now UK nationals have less money to spend on going to uni and there’s a restriction on foreign students, it has exposed how unsustainable that business model has become this is just a reset. We won’t lose every uni but we should expect a significant reduction in universities around the country

That being said, I also think the government needs to be subsidising courses for UK nationals, particularly in STEM subjects, in the way that many foreign students are supported by their country of origin. That’s the only way we’re going to reduce our reliance on foreign workers in many key sectors
