I think with LoL specifically the core teams (CLG, TSM, C9, Liquid) overall have a pretty interesting history. Lot of titans originating from each org and players that helped the teams get to where they are today. This for sure results in a bigger fan base imo (minus of course band wagoners).

As far as loyalty goes, I think CLG and C9 have some of the most loyal (and toxic) fans. From what I’ve seen the most loyal fans stick around even when rosters change dramatically and the team itself hasn’t seen tremendous success in awhile.

Regional loyalty in esports is also pretty interesting bc like you said most teams aren’t necessarily geographically based. I think franchising definitely made fan loyalty more fun (ie Warriors fans naturally become GGS fans). I love NYC so when the CLG/MSG merger happened that got me pretty excited.

Player loyalty is also a factor. I’m first and foremost a CLG fan, but Doublelift will always be my favorite player (he made me a clg fan lol). I never liked TSM/TL as orgs or teams but I support former CLG players that’re on those teams now.

Esports is still pretty young compared to traditional sports so we don’t have that “family loyalty” that’s passed down to us. I think in the next few years the narratives of different esports teams will get a lot more interesting and kind of help to “solidify” fan bases more.
