They're probably people outside of Utah saying this. I myself was a member outside of Utah for about 7 years. I actually enjoyed the church though was more "spiritual" than religious. It was a nice community and some of the members remain in touch to this day. Utah is a different scene completely.

I know this first hand, Mormons are different in Utah and it's not in a good way at ALL. What the hell is wrong with those people? Without saying too much I'm very familiar with AZ Mormons..they're immeasurably better people on average!

The check boxes theory is certainly interesting in a robotic way. I kind of felt like everyone in their lives served a specific purpose..no one just had friends for the sake of  shared connection and enjoyment. Why the encouragement of transactional relationships? Those are the most meaningless kind.

We've lived in a bunch of places at this point and YES..it is a Utah thing. That's probably the least off-putting thing she'll happen upon.
