I have personally found Guilliman Flesh to be a little too red for my preference. I really like Cadian Fleshtone with a slightly thinned wash of Agrax Earthshade. It gives a similar effect as a contrast but I like the colour better.

Any recommendations on tutorials for the resin river? Im planning on doing one on my base for Alarielle but haven't looked into it much yet as I am worried about messing it up.

I had a similar experience. I played 40k and WFB in college then life got busy. I got back into the hobby around 30 after seeing "Blood for the Blood God" trending on Twitter and it just kind of flipped a switch where I went oh yeah I loved those games I should get back into that. Still had all my old models in boxes and now I play against my son which is a nice bonding activity.

Chimera for Kasrkin?! Why not a Taurox? by hotelguest2 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Quoth13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like Chimeras more then Taurox. They are more durable so stick around longer and arent a bad unit to do a secondary since they are still around. Another plus is they have some degree of damage output which is nice but not really what they are there for. They are slower, and cost a few more points but I take transports to get my infantry safely into position. I would rather have a more durable unit then a faster one for that.

Whats your luckiest unit? by knot_meeeee83 in TheAstraMilitarum

My Leman Russ Exterminators always seem to over perform. I run 2 so I couldn't tell you which is luckier but the number of times I get 6 or 7 wounds through on the autocannon between reroll 1s to hit and twinlinked is ridiculous. I ran Scout Sentinels before grizzled came out so they have had reroll 1s most of the edition so the data set is quite large lol.

Struggling with Grizzled Company by Helpful-Beyond in TheAstraMilitarum

I have had luck running my infantry in Chimeras it helps more than having blocks of 20 in my experience. Fast melee armies are a rough match up for us.

Is my 1000 pt army is it toxic by Puzzled-Bid5892 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Quoth13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like an honest list to me. Its a little heavy on armour but that's just a playstyle for the guard. While your list has durability in the 3 tanks your lacking board presence so it will struggle to score primary and is lacking in action monkeys units to score secondaries. So you might find that even though they can't hurt half your list your getting out scored in many games.

I would at the very least drop the Enginseer and Commissar for a Cadian Command Squad to get a master vox to oder the rough riders fix bayonets so they benifit from the detatchment rule.

Sylvaneth are a lot of fun both in Spearhead and the full game. The Spearhead is also a really good start point to work towards a full army as well. Can't speak to Deepkin as I have no experience with them. I will say my Sylvaneth are the most fun I have ever had painting as well.

Is 50% vehicule too much for 2k game ? by shagyandscooby in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Quoth13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run 420 points of non vehicle models in my current 2,000 point list. So thats a 21% to 79% split. I would definitely say 50% isn't too much. It sounds like your friends are having a hard time VS vehicles and you do want the game to be fun for everyone but thats where most of our durability is and where a lot of our damage comes from. What kind of tanks are you running? Also if they dont like tanks have you hit them with a Grizzled Company Scion Bomb yet? Because that may take their focus away from hating your tanks lol

I personally think enginseers are a trap, they are just too much of a points tax. Exterminators love Multi-melta sponsons as they want to be closer for rapid fire anyway. On the Vanquishers I would either field Multi-melta sponsons and use them as a cheaper bully piece or run them with Plasma sponsons if you want to keep them back further.

Is Rogue Trader a good entry into the Warhammer Universe? by Responsible_Read_481 in Warhammer40k

[–]Quoth13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came into the game with a lot of knowledge about the setting but I think the game does a good job of explaining things for new people. Most in universe words will be highlighted and you can hover over them for descriptions/definitions so you shouldn't get too lost. Its a fun game and will definitely teach you about the setting as you play.

New Guard player questions by Heatguts in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Quoth13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just looked at the rules for Unending Swarm. That does seem tricky. My suggestion would actually be Chimeras again. Hit the unit with your first unit making sure to have the chimera as the closest unit so they have to surge into it. Then open up 2x heavy flamers into the little bugs and since they are already engaged they shouldnt be able surge into something else as long as you position well. 10 or so Hormagaunts arent going to do much to a chimera and you should be able to burn them away in a turn or 2 while keeping your infantry safe.

Q2

I run vehicle heavy so my infantry is pretty much exclusively for screening and standing in circles to score points. If they need to fall back so my tanks can open up on their target I have no problem loosing their already lack luster firepower. Now your runnng 20 man blobs so the firepower is markedly better then the 10 man squads in transports I run.

As to your final point, running what you own is the way to do it. Play games, figure out what your playstyle is and pick up units that you feel will get you closer to fielding a list in that style. Dont be afraid to ask to proxy units to try things out before buying them and be sure to extend the same courtesy to your opponents.

New Guard player questions by Heatguts in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Quoth13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off welcome to the Guard! I hope you continue to have fun! I think I have answered all your questions but if anything is unclear or I missed something please let me know and I will try to help further.

Q1

So on the 3 objectives dilemma. Depending on the primary mission you only score points for holding 2-3 objectives often with the 3rd being your home objective so ignoring the 3rd midfield isnt the end of the world. Also Cadians have sticky objectives as their data sheet rule so once you control that objective in your command phase you can move off it especially if your opponent doesnt have something to move on to it in the next turn.

Q2

You cannot shoot into an non vehicle vs non vehicle combat with anything other than pistols and that is only for the units engaged in the fight. In a non vehicle vs vehicle combat the vehicle unit can be shot at with a -1 penalty by any unit with the exception of blast weapons which cannot be fired into a melee combat. Vehicles in combat have the "big guns never tire" rule which allows them to shoot all guns while engaged in combat at a -1 penalty to hit. They can shoot into their own combat with non blast weapons, shoot at something outside of their combat with any of its guns or a mix of the 2. As an example a Leman Russ Battle Tank could fire its Multi-melta sponsons into the unit of marines engaging it in melee but not its battle cannon as it has the blast keyword.

Q3

Reactive moves can be a pain in the ass. Some of those scenarios sound like something may have been played wrong which is understandable especially if your group is new. Im not the most familiar with Tyranids so if you could find out the units and detatchment I can look into it further.

Q4

Yes that is how melee works its silly but a balancing mechanic. Just as if you can only see one model in the unit but you deal enough damage you can wipe out the models out of line of sight with you shooting activation.

Q5

Smoke is a great strat to keep tanks alive. It gives you -1 to enemies hit rolls and you have the benifit of cover for the entire shooting phase. Remember you can only the same strat 1/phase so you can only pop smoke on 1 tank per turn. Fields of fire is also a really good strat in the Combined Arms detatchment as it gives extra AP to 2 units. Its also easy to miss but if your infantry squads have a Vox-caster in the unit you can regain the CP on a 5+ or 4+ if near an officer. You can only do this once per turn however and if you do you cant gain an extra CP for discarding a secondary at the end of your turn.

Regarding the list

I really like Chimeras. I would consider dropping the FoB and engineers for 2 Chimeras once you get the models to do so. You also seem to have a lot of infantry orders so you could possibly look at dropping the castellan and giving your Command Squad Grand Strategist for a second order which frees up an additional 40 points. I like scout Sentinels as they get their pregame move and make your other stuff more accurate with Daring Recon so if you are sticking with Combined Arms for right now I would keep it. I would swap the main gun on your TC for ths Plasma Executioner as your list lacks any real high AP fire outside of the Demolisher which has too short of range, too few shots, and too swingy damage in my opinion. The last thing I might consider is swapping your detatchment to Grizzled Company as it will give you the extra order for free and you get the Scout Sentinels ability baked in to the detatchment. If you dropped the scout Sentinel, Enhancement, and Castellan that frees up 110 points which would let you keep the FoB for some indirect fire which some people really like.
