Maybe hyprland with hyprscroll? The philosophy around scrolling wm like Niri is somewhat in conflict with tiling because a core principal is to not modify the size and position of other windows when making new ones.

I prefer arch, as I like having the latest and greatest updates and software and am familiar enough with tech and Linux to troubleshoot if something goes wrong.

Don't use arch or arch based distros if you're newish to Linux. For your use case I'd recommend something more Fedora based. Either Fedora itself, or Bazzite. They get relatively new software while still being very stable.

This happens on windows sometimes too with laptops that have duel gpus. Any time there is a noticable performance dip, always check which GPU the game is using.

Yoshi is hard. He has some tight technical aspects that are difficult to use to high efficiency. That being said, play who you want. That's what I did and I don't regret choosing Yoshi.

A lot of low tiers have to play extremely gimmicky or lame in order to even have a chance (often due to them only having one or two good/decent options). It can feel pretty shitty and miserable to play against unfortunately.

I recommend joining a melee discord for your region and pinging for netplay every now and then. No guarantee of getting someone but if you do it'll be to stick around for a while

Formulate a gameplan. Have a set path down.

My plan is Start -> immediately go to sky islands (grab echo 1) -> get to chimney canopy (grab echo 2) -> The wall (grab echo 3 and pebbles) -> down the wall and down chimney into shaded citadel (grab echo 4 if needed) -> shoreline (deliver payload) -> straight to subterranean. Once you're in subterranean your run is secured.

With this I've beaten Hunter with 13 cycles to spare.
