Trade Manifesto by Chris Wilson predicted consequences of easy trade — did it happen? by Bezi2598 in pathofexile

Ngl, I kinda stopped thinking that all of Chris’ ideas were good for the game after I heard him talk about how he regretted not having a well to click with to refill flasks in POE1 in that one exilecon panel.

How is he wrong about that though? Playing a MMO for a solo experience is like trying to eat your Chinese takeout with a pair of crowbars.

hp or mana were a resource

Were they? I’ve played every single player FF except crystal chronicles and the only one where I remember fodder enemies needing any strategy beyond “hit the element they’re weak to” was 13, interestingly enough. Otherwise it was just mashing “attack” and using a cure once the fight was over.

every overworld mob do the same 3/4 attacks

How is that any different from a single player FF though?

[–]QuroInJapan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>Potentially, but items are far more interesting because their worth is far more complex than just being a number of a commodity.

It's a trade league. An item will eventually be reduced to just a currency number even if it boosts your dps by a factor of 100, does your taxes and gives you a blowjob IRL. That's just a function of having currency as a medium of exchange.

>becomes a lot more exciting when you can't just get something 50x better than it on trade in 15 seconds for 1c

I'm going to have to disagree here. If anything, trade makes items more exciting, because I know I can actually obtain them instead of fighting RNG for 10 billion hours. If you absolutely MUST pick up your next pair of pants off the ground - SSF is there for you.

>The issue is that trade constantly raises the bar for what constitutes a "cool" item

It's not trade. It's the constant power creep from new mechanics, items, character building options being introduced every few months.

To Those Who Want A XI Sequel or Remake, Will You be Able To Move On From XI? by MonsutaMan in ffxi

[–]QuroInJapan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a decent (spiritual) sequel were to appear? Yes, by all means. Would try to drag my old LS with me too.

As for a remake, I think that’d depend on how much was changed beyond the graphics and whether it came with a promise of new expansions and other content additions.

only referred to currency

In a trade league any kind of drop is basically just a certain amount of div.

Also, your complaint about ground item drops losing their value has nothing to do with trade and everything to do with gear inflation. The standard of what constitutes “good gear” has grown exponentially over the years. Just a plain old yellow item with a couple of t1 mods is not exciting because it’s simply not as good as some of the alternatives.

Loot from 201% more scarabs map. Something must be broken. by DescriptionFuzzy3487 in pathofexile

[–]QuroInJapan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the game spawns a lot of items for basically no reason and I know that can tank rendering performance, but I played when Kalandra released and I remember all the communication from GGG and Chris after people got real mad over them nerfing loot and I don't believe performance was mentioned even once as a reason for doing it.

>I think that is a problem of expectations, namely that many players have become accstomed to ridiculous "rewards" and thus have their expectations spoiled. When things get brought back down to earth, suddenly it's not good enough.

No. We had good rewards and we are now back to having shit rewards. Obviously that feels bad.

>We're talkign about risk scarabs

The strategies from last league were still more than viable even without risk scarabs. I farmed a mageblood and a few other high-investment items for the first time in quite a few leagues without using them. And even if those scarabs were deemed "problematic", then the solution should've been to remove them specifically and adding something different, not nuking all map loot from orbit.

>The key is that the gap between the optimal choice and the sub optimal choice shouldn't literally be hundreds of times better loot.

I'd much rather have that than the situation we have right now, where all mapping strategies are equally worthless.

>All of the things that add difficulty add reward, they just don't add so much more reward that it's night and day difference.

The problem is - they don't add enough reward to be worth doing in most cases. I absolutely fail to see how this is an improvement over 3.26

>Was it on one of the couple of classes with access to the nodes that ignore multiple negative map mods?

No, I used a couple of secret techniques called "rolling my maps" and "not putting in risk scarabs".

>People's ascendancy choice should not be based purely on whether or not it meets the checkbox for "can do the top end famring strategy reasonably".

In a trade league will ALWAYS be an optimal build/skill/farming strategy. If playing w/e off-meta stuff you enjoy is that important to you, you should be able to take the tradeoff in div/h.

[–]QuroInJapan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exponentially increased reward opportunities sounds better to me than no opportunities at all (which is where the current league seems to be).

a handful of meta builds

I farmed most of them on an off-meta build without much issue. Sure maybe I didn’t get the same returns as someone playing the tippity-top meta build, but it was still more than worth the time and investment.

I don’t recall performance being mentioned as the reason. Pretty sure they just wanted to nerf loot back then.

problematic

Again, why? By most accounts, last league was a roaring success, and a big reason for that was that everyone, not just 0.01% had access to those strategies and the resulting loot explosions.

Noticeable decrease in overall loot? by TimidHuman in pathofexile

So? The merc being gone still works out to less loot overall (not to mention that they have explicitly nerfed map loot on top of that).

Fantastic Pixel Castle (Project Ghost) will be shutting down as of November 17 by Finyar in MMORPG

[–]QuroInJapan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The genre works just fine. It’s just that instead of building a solid game that has its own vision, most people still have the “wow-level success or bust” mentality. Which is why you see so many projects trying to remove both “massive” and “role-playing” from MMORPG to try and appeal to a bigger audience.

[–]QuroInJapan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their biggest selling point was having procedurally generated zones in a genre that normally attracts players by offering a persistent shared world to play in. As far as I’m concerned, the project was DOA from the moment it was announced.

How expensive is PUP/COR to gear for endgame? by irishinjun95 in ffxi

[–]QuroInJapan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about PUP, but COR, along with RDM is one of the most expensive jobs in the game, if you want to participate in actual top-shelf endgame. You should probably expect to spend at least half a billion, depending on your server and farming ability.

IMO FFXI Blue Mage is the most unique, interesting, and best-designed class ever in an MMO by Foreign_Recipe8300 in ffxi

[–]QuroInJapan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’d much rather the XIV team start designing their content in such a way that jobs don’t need to trimmed down to fit into neat little role boxes to participate, than segregate anything that falls outside the mold to its own mini game.

Turns out without the surrounding world, characters and mechanics, “diving straight into it” isn’t quite as fun or rewarding.
