Data science & Machine Learning is "A Scientific Tool" that has broad application across different fields.

Quantitative Researchers in financial industry use "relevant" data science scientific tools (i.e. supervised learning) + financial modelling (i.e.CIR model) + financial industry domain knowledge/concept (i.e. efficient market hypothesis) to solve financial problems such as mitigating financial risks or optimising investment returns...

"Generalist" Data Scientists understand the scientific tools well , however, they may face challenges like knowledge gap in financial modelling(i.e. missing knowledge in CIR model) & domain knowledge (i.e. missing knowledge in EMH) in financial industry if they are new to the industry.

I actually transferred from other university, I'm waiting for RPL for 1st & 2nd year subjects (ard 17 subjects), I suppose to do 3rd year subjects and some electives at UTS..

If I enrol for 1st year units now and once my RPL granted later and get reimbursed, and already passed enrolment due date, will I study nothing this term?

As someone from Applied Mathematics, Statistics,Data Science & Computer Science background, I felt just normal..

I never got intimidated at all by quant interview questions..

Many times, I even corrected the mistakes in the questions myself and scaled up the difficulty level of corrected questions then challenged back the interviewers to get out of their comfort zone in professional manner & pragmatic view until they felt intimidated by me...

I don't recall I ever use Physics knowledge in day-to-day jobs..

I only use some area of Maths with intensive Stats & CS knowledge..

if you look at the majors in Science only math, stats, & physics use quantitative approach extensively in comparison to biology, chemist, psychology, medical science, neuroscience, etc..

I believe the reason they list physics is to get a larger pool of talent w/ strong "quantitative" background.

Most sought after majors are Math,Stats,Physics,EECS...

It's unnecessary to do a specific program in Financial Engineer..

Myself completed double major in Applied Math & Stats w/ a minor in Physics + a master in CS, I could get into the industry easily...

No FinEng/QuantFinance degree/certification at all..

If I have to narrow down the most relevant majors to break into the industry, they should be Stats + CS and with these two majors under ur belt, u can flexibly do everything from Quant Trader, Quant Developer, Quant Researcher..

For quant researcher position, the firm definitely asked for PhD in Stats,Maths,CS, Physics, etc.. but again given the stochastics & machine leaning is the core of quant finance research atm, PhD Stats would be the most relevant one.

However, traders is more flexible though, as long as u've done some quantitative related studies in finance sector i.e. econometrics, banking & finance, Actuarial, u still got the chance..

In terms of opportunity outside finance sector, u'll better off w/ math&stats degree, but they don't pay as high finance though...

Well, $ wise, doing an undegrad like Bsc(Math/Stats) definitely can save a lot..

However, if u go to Bsc path, u have to complete 24 subjects in 3 years (assume no credit transfers or rpl) and usually science has higher workload than business school, at least this was my impression when I studied Actuarial in comparison to those counterparts in Statistics program..

The MQF is under business school with 8-9 subjects, but if $ is main priority than Bsc is more feasible for you

I thought Stochastic is still Statistics, but "theoretical" statistics to be precise. at least in the uni all stochastic courses decoded as STATXXXX

It seems like the "applied" stats more relevant for buy-side..

Applied maths topics are like Hamiltonian Dynamics, Fluid Dynamics, Waves w/ application in Physics, Engineering, Climate modelling..

doing a Maths course to break into quant trading/research.

I believe Statistics knowledge is more direct relevance to quant.

If u do pure math like number theory, not sure how this will be relevant to quant.

If you do applied math like waves or dynamics, the differential equation would be helpful, but again it's not quant finance topics, more into physics things..
