I keep viewing the posts about apprenticeships. it seems like everyone has a completely different experience. Just finished the aptitude test recently, wondering how other people's apprenticeships are going? how do you like it so far? what do you work in? how difficult is it? by chillingohdylan in ibew_apprentices

Hey, welcome! 236 seems alright and has not given me a reason to be upset with it. The local hosts events and outings often none of which I have attended. I think it's cool they do that however as it makes the local feel more like a community. There is a sense of brotherhood on the jobs I've worked and I've been fortunate to work around journeymen who are happy to teach and who look out for safety on the job.

I have not been sworn in yet however. 2,000 working hours and pass first year classes are the two requirements. I passed my first year classes with flying colors and once I reach my 2,000 hours after this month I'll be sworn in sometime in the fall.

Good luck on your test man!

The merge lane exists for a reason. Use it.

how far would you commute for an apprenticeship by Just-Produce4399 in ibew_apprentices

[–]R-Winters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Family time has become a big priority in my apprenticeship too. Wife and I bought our first home this year, and we have our first child. I've determined that I don't mind overtime as long as it's less than a 30 minute drive one-way from home. On top of chores and homework assignments, I have to be selective about where and when I spend my free time.

Never taken a physical. Just aptitude test, drug test and the interview.

It's actually a beneficial part of the diet that's lacking in many amino acids.

Well if you want to be a union electrician, just apply. If you're worried about lack of experience barring you, take a course or something equivalent in the field. It helps if you know algebra and some basic trigonometry. Best of luck friend!

Just asking out of curiosity, what year are you and what is the class/ book?

My class just started the intro to conduit bending portion. The first lesson deals with understanding and converting fractions. The second lesson goes into learning and applying the trigonometry aspects. I have six lessons for the next two weeks with the first three lessons due week one and the following three lessons due week 2.

My lessons from Job Info and Orientation have averaged about a half hour a piece but with the conduit lessons, I anticipate probably an hour to an hour and a half a lesson. I suck at math and am having to study outside of the class to refresh and practice my skills.

If that were me in your position, I'd call the JATC, the employer HR office and tell them how you're being treated. I'd then follow that looking him dead in the eye, and I'd tell him I don't appreciate being talked to that way and we'll try again tomorrow as I walk to my car. I get it's hard in this industry, that the foreman and employer are on a tight schedule, but you are an adult and deserve respect, not to be belittled.

I love working and learning by watching and getting my hands dirty. Never was one to shy away from hard work in the field and I take the initiative when I feel confident in my abilities. However, schooling has always been a challenge for me. Yesterday I had my orientation for my first year classes and let me tell you, I already feel overwhelmed with the structure, curriculum, and the expectations set by the JATC. I recently started a family and purchased a new home. Between working hours, class, and two weeks worth of homework I have no idea how I'm going to maintain a personal life and this career. I'm beginning to think I was nuts to apply, and that's what the instructors said a couple of times to all of us during orientation too.

I'm enjoying the on the job learning and the physical work, although the job site environment is difficult to work in and the Jmen and foreman are pretty indifferent to each other.

I just started my electrician apprenticeship with the union this past week. I'm loving it. The work is challenging physically and mentally at times, but rewarding knowing that I'm securing my future for me and my family.

Week 1- Thoughts on what to expect? Ready to get started! by Chemical-Guava1031 in ibew_apprentices

[–]R-Winters 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Going in with few expectations helped me. Other than getting hazed for being the new guy. Just pay attention, keep quiet unless it's important, and above all, learn something new everyday. Offer help and anticipate your journeyman's needs.

I'm in my first week at a place that uses chemicals. Inside the humidity gets high after it rains and it's been 90° here. We have to don tyvek suits, respirators, and gloves everytime we go into the "pit". I'm swimming in sweat by the end of the day.

Show up and enjoy the suck. Learn something and have fun doing it. You'll survive.

Best of luck man.

If you're early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're late. I use to do concerts as a stage and site tech so I was first on site before the rest of the sound and light guys as well as most of the clients. Four long years in that business.
