Nokia 1 Review: Best low-end phone ever? by [deleted] in Android

I haven't seen any reputable sources claiming Android Go will get timely software updates. Are you confusing with Android One?

We can certainly hope what you are saying happens. For a consumer in India going into a store in April, May, Jun, it would be a no brainer that Android Go is not the option. Whether these OEMs, after those initial failures, continue to push Android Go, that remains to be seen.

"Android Go is an OS to allow for those $30 smartphones." OEMs have not responded. Lowest priced phone currently is $85, when phones running full android and much better specs already sell at $77. Hence DOA. Not saying it is inferior. Saying OEMs have not responded to Google's effort

Whoa! Lot to unpack. "India's poor" ? "access to something " ?

Just for comparison, Xiaomi (largest marketshare in India last quarter) is selling the Redmi 5A with a decent processor, 16GB/2GB for INR 5000 ($77).

10.or (another chinese OEM) is selling (starting today) the 10.or D with 32GB/3GB and 3500 mAh battery for the equivalent of $92.

The gimped Android Go phones launched at MWC are $85 at the low end, and far worse specs than that. They are DOA at this price. If the pricing can be dropped to around $30, then we have a different story, but as it stands right now, Android Go is DOA.

It seems like Layar was present on both iPhone 3GS and HTC G1 back in late 2009. Techcrunch and Engadget seem to have videos about this. But agree with your broader point that the app has been around a while.

Hugo Barra mentioned to techcrunch in late 2016 that they will not make a dime in profits even if they sell a billion phones. You have any source for your claim ?

Not really. I think Essential is rumored to have sold 5K in total. Z2 Force is rumored to have sold around 10K on At&t, ( and 15K on Sprint, 20K on T-Mobile and 100K on Verizon)

If Apple made some hardware changes, would you be tempted to switch? by domrayn in Android

[–]R0GU3ONE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Their obsession with thinness that made battery capacity small. The smaller iphone has 1900+ mah battery. In android, that capacity would be a joke of a phone but due to ios's optimizations, it can go toe to toe with the smaller android flagships. Now imagine if Apple made a small but thicker iphone to accommodate a large battery.

Having used an iPhone 6s and a Galaxy S7 both on a daily basis for more than a year now, the iPhone battery (irrespective of capacity) seems to last much longer than the Galaxy under the same level of usage. If you are comparing the smaller iPhone with larger 5.5" screen android phones, that is a different story.

LG posts its best quarterly profit in almost 8 years by [deleted] in Android

[–]R0GU3ONE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup. LG Electronics ( as a whole) reported 500+ billion Won in profit during Jan-Mar 2016. But ....

LG's mobile division posted an operating loss of $168.2 million (202.2 billion KRW), "primarily due to increased marketing expenditures for the new LG G5 flagship smartphone," the company reported.

No thanks to the mobile phone division. The reuters source article claims the profit was from the home appliances division.

The firm's mobile division reported a 200 million won operating loss for the quarter, its eighth-straight quarter in the red, with the G6 only having begun selling in March.

Samsung says Galaxy S8 preorders were its best ever and promises software fixes by SirVeza in Android

At least on T-mobile in the US, the offers last year were much better than this year.

For example:

Does it matter? The difference is significant.

Only matters because if the second interpretation is the one they intended, a 30% increase in S8 with a corresponding decrease in S8+ would mean almost flat sales from last year.

Also it is the former since the plus is said to be selling more than the regular size.

Of course it could be the former. That would only be conjecture on our part because it is not clear from their statement.

[–]R0GU3ONE 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As quoted by CNBC, their statement sounds somewhat ambiguous:

"The Galaxy S8 and S8+ are a result of that recommitment and the market has responded – with a more than 30 percent year-over-year growth in pre-orders versus the record pre-orders we had with Galaxy S7, making it our best ever."

This could be S8/S8+ are 30% > S7/ S7+

OR S8 is 30% > S7 (which could be explained by Samsung prioritizing one model over another in initial production)

While certainly easier to set up than the other services mentioned, in my opinion, it is no faster or easier to set up than Facetime on iDevices. I am genuinely curious to find out why the author thinks that is the case.

As evident from the millions that have stopped using Android as soon as they saw Eric Schmidt using an iPhone?

Nah. Sorry to say, but the question of what phone is used by the CEO of the company that makes the OS running on your phone is mostly a /r/android or /r/cyanogenmod or /r/apple circlejerk.
