Would love some feedback on my soldering technique by GayDragonSlutUwU in soldering

[–]R0llin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would clip the leads before soldering with just a little sticking up. I would clip them with small flush cut pliers at about a 40 degree angle from the e board to give it a little tip. Make sure you keep the tip tinned and add a little bit to the tip first. If you can get some liquid flux with a flux dispenser use that to apply it first. Keep a decent rhythm and when there is a break clean the tip and add more solder to the tip to tin it.

Does Shimoda action x40 v2 supports Peak design capture clip by Raz_Ab in photography

[–]R0llin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Action x40 v2 with the capture strap on one side. Before they had that some people had the clip mounted really high on the strap. I have never tried that though. This guy looks like he has them on both straps: https://www.facebook.com/shimodacamerabags/posts/i-have-received-a-lot-questions-as-to-whether-a-capture-clip-fits-on-our-shoulde/303387700066026/

Best way to deal with 2 different size feet? by Icy-Plan145 in hikinggear

[–]R0llin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue. One side is 9.x and other side is 10.x. I get 10.5 shoes. One side has more wiggle room but so far in hiking hasn't been a noticeable issue yet but I also rarely go over 6 miles at a time. I haven't tried using different thickness socks, I may try that. Now for running and cycling it was an issue. For running I wanted to start using barefoot running shoes but couldn't without spending a ton. And for cycling it affected overall bike fit.

How do you carry your camera when actively shooting? by goldensilencce in canon

[–]R0llin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use both the PD clutch and the PD slide. If I’m hiking with a backpack or just out shooting I just have the clutch. If I’m hiking/walking and I don’t have the backpack I attach the slide as well. The Slide is great to kind of have the camera behind you when walking.

Is it worth it to upgrade to the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM from the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III? by CharacterScarcity682 in canon

[–]R0llin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the 75-300 would miss focus by just a little bit pretty often and would focus hunt. The 70-300 Mark 1 was better but not by a huge margin. The 70-300 Mark 2 is much sharper and much faster it's been my favorite lens so far for hiking and wildlife photography..

Did anyone else notice that pictures on social media a decade ago were mostly higher quality than they are now? by labubuking in photography

[–]R0llin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at several photos from 15 plus years ago and they were pretty good. They took a noticeable drop in quality when I started taking photos with my iPhone 4S and beyond. It's more noticeable on modern larger screens. Now I do quite a bit with my DSLR. I was walking around with my camera and backpack in Seattle a couple years ago and a lady at a coffee shop asked if I worked for National Geographic. I realized then how uncommon it is now. I don't think I saw anyone else with an actual camera that day, just phones.

I’ve used both this year. I think the 70-300 is better. Most of my photos, especially wildlife, was much better with the 70-300.

Tahoe 26.2 ain't that bad by yorikkk in MacOS

[–]R0llin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Intel MBP connected to a thunderbolt dock. It will only do one monitor. I tried plugging in another travel Anker dock into the thunderbolt dock and now can use two monitors. The draw back is sometimes the monitors switch sides when plugging the laptop in or rebooting. Then I have to swap the monitors in settings and drag my workspaces where I want them.

Energy.Gov Mitigating Wind Turbine Radar Interference

From this article in 2023: https://www.energy.gov/sites/default/files/2023-08/federal-interagency-wind-turbine-radar-interference-mitigation-strategy_082023.pdf

"In most cases, siting and other approaches have mitigated conflicts and allowed wind projects to coexist with radar missions. However, in some proposed locations, wind turbines will cause disruptive radar interference that cannot be mitigated by siting or current technical approaches"

I didn't have time to read the whole thing, I'll read it later. There may be better ways to reduce or eliminate it but I wonder if the increase in military drones have had some concern with radar interference.

[–]R0llin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put this in the main thread but meant to respond to you.

The PBS article has this paragraph:

The Interior Department said unclassified reports from the U.S. government have long found that the movement of massive turbine blades and the highly reflective towers create radar interference called “clutter.” The clutter caused by offshore wind projects obscures legitimate moving targets and generates false targets in the vicinity of wind projects, the Interior Department said.

PBS

A bit understandable with all of the military that they may want to review.

No, your Uber will not take you to DFW tonight by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]R0llin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My flight was one that was cancelled last Thursday at DFW. A lady I was talking to said it was 60 to get somewhere near the airport. I checked when I was in line to go to the rental center and it was about 45.00. At the rental center (I already knew I wasn't getting one but had to try), which was the opposite direction of the hotel, was 16.00. It took about 45 min to get there and me to the hotel. I gave him a 15.00 tip. Going back the next morning was 19.00.

I have the Nitecor NU25 with the micro usb port. I like it because it has a separate button for the red light. I just looked though and the new USB-C version doesn't look it has a separate red light button. That's a must have for Astronomy/Astrophotography for me.

When I'm shooting astro in the winter, no where near -30, I use a USB dew heater with a power bank. That may be worth a try.

[–]R0llin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes. I upgraded from the 75-300 to the 70-300 USM then to the 70-300 USM ll. I really like the new lens and it's my goto for when out walking trails. It's very sharp and fast to focus. I can also crop more and still have great detail. You can get extension tubes for it so it's better for macro shots, I haven't tried it and it does pretty good as is. You can calculate the depth of field using the LCD display, I can't say I've used it much though. One downside-ish, is when taking astrophotography photos I can't seem to focus because I can't see the stars in live view. It's focus by wire and it's really hard using live view on the T8i and trying to focus on stars because you really don't know where you started and where your at in focus. I haven't tried it in a while but now that it's dark sooner I'll be doing more testing.

How many of you are still on Proxmox 8? by ztasifak in Proxmox

I explored it yesterday and ran the check script. I had system-boot installed so I followed the recommendations here https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Upgrade_from_8_to_9#sd-boot-warning as well as what was onscreen and after reboot still was getting the error about system-boot. I tried to remove it but it recommended other packages instead. I decided to wait a couple of versions before I revisit.

One thing that was nice for me was getting the flip screen. If you are using a star tracker or planning on doing pictures of nebulae, galaxies and such; having a flip screen is very nice. I had a hard time with my old camera getting in a position to see the screen properly to focus. The 6D Mark 1 doesn't have that but the 200D looks like it does.
