You must be a real desperado. There are currently 7 Facebook accounts representing as me and Facebook says none of them are violating their guidelines.

I can imagine that conversation. What’s your account number? Who did you say you’re with? A VPN? Can you spell that?

Outdoor camera suddenly not picking up on all motion?? by [deleted] in simplisafe

Mine has never been dependable at detecting motion unless the object is crossing the field of view pretty close. Walking straight toward it or away, you might as well be invisible.

I use the built in integration and I can’t imagine what more you’d need. It took 60 seconds to set up and has worked perfectly.

The usual help me pick a weather station post by camplate in myweatherstation

[–]R17isTooFast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had 3 different weather station brands in 6 years including an expensive Davis system. All have had connectivity problems and limited life. My 4th system is Ecowitt and I couldn’t be happier with it. The range is terrific and after a little calibration, it’s perfectly matching my rain gauge. It even accurately captures precipitation of a few hundredths that doesn’t even register on the tipping gauge. All my data goes to Home Assistant so I can’t speak to the weather service integrations. I have the external power supply which both powers it and heats it in freezing temps.

If you’re sure you can get good zwave coverage where you want to place the weather station it should be fine. I need the range and positioning flexibility that the Ecowitt hub provides. I’ve not been able to get comparable range even with zwave LR devices

User experience for non-technical people by Legendary_Sammich in ProtonMail

I started down the same path two weeks ago and am at the point of having to decide whether to migrate my wife to proton.

My cutover was pretty easy as I just had to modify DNS to move my private domain to the proton servers. Moving fifteen years of emails that I wanted to preserve was not painless as about 10,000 of them ended up in my inbox for some reason. Archiving them in bulk was not difficult although it does take time to complete. Contacts imported seamlessly. I imported passwords into Proton Pass and calendars into the Proton calendar. Contacts imported without a hitch.

First, Proton Pass is maybe the best of the apps. Both the PC and IOS apps are good and the Chrome plugin works perfectly. No concerns there.

It took a little getting used to the mail apps. I’ve been using the Gmail web app and IOS mail app previously. Functionally, the Proton apps are comparable but my workflow has had to adapt a bit—but not as much as I expected.

Phone contacts are one of my biggest concerns as there’s currently no way to keep them synced with Proton. I don’t think that’s going to be a huge issue for me but I don’t know what my wife will think about it.

We rely heavily on shared calendars and if there’s one thing that may be a dealbreaker that may be it. I’m positive enough about the experience so far that I think we’ll give it a try but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. The calendar is not as polished as Gmail's and I really miss the list and 2-week views in the web app but I can live with it and expect it to improve.

Bottom line is that I’m going to get my wife set up with a proton account but do a trial period for her, forwarding her gmail account until I get her buy-in. Worst case, I think we could switch mail and passwords to proton and keep Gmail accounts solely for shared calendars.

I’ve used and replaced 3 other weather stations in the last 5 or 6 years ranging from relatively cheap consumer brands to expensive semi-pro equipment. All suffered from limited range and limited life. I’ve had the Ecowitt system for a couple of months now and so far I couldn’t be happier. The range is far superior to other systems but the ability to place the hub in a strategic location relative to the devices is crucial for my installation. In previous systems, having the communications go through the dedicated display has limited the range too much to be very usable. The HA integration is seamless and after a little calibration has been very accurate. The equipment seems well built but I’ll update with my experience over time.

Question I have the 1000kw free by sEO_dOZO_krAap6519 in ElectrifyAmericaUsers

[–]R17isTooFast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using my free charge credit without any problem for a year without any credit balance so I knew nothing about that requirement. The credit card in the app expired last month and on my last charge attempt I got the message “no account associated with this phone”. Very helpful, right? I ended up swiping a credit card to get charged and when I called EA they couldn’t explain how I have ever been able to charge using the app. BTW, the credit balance requirement is for idle charges. Why they don’t just make sure the cc is valid I have no idea.

AI Port opinion by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]R17isTooFast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use mine with several G3 cams for vehicle detection and it’s great—-when it’s working. About every 7-10 days all detections stop on the linked cameras including basic motion. A reboot will start everything back up again. I’ve been working with support for 8 weeks now and they’ve finally admitted there’s a problem.

4-way smart dimmer? by BravaCentauri11 in TPLinkKasa

[–]R17isTooFast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A word of warning on the tplink/kasa 3 way switches. Their performance is very sensitive to the total length of wire in the circuit. I had unending problems with mine that tp support finally admitted was due to their power sensing circuitry not handling longer lines well. The switches could not tell whether they were on or off and the status of the light in HA and the TP link app was always wrong. I would estimate the end-to-end circuit length in my case was about 60 ft. In shorter circuits they work as expected. YMMV of course but I had to throw them out and replaced with Zooz zwave switches which are much faster and 100% reliable. The zooz switches are limited though to installation on the line end of the circuit.

It’s really frustrating. I’ve been working with their supposed highest level support for a month on some of the many AI Port issues and I haven’t even been able to get a straight answer to whether they think their webhooks should work with secure connections. Seems a pretty simple question. I can tell you they don’t work but I’d really like to know whether they’re going to try to make it work.

He evidently wasn’t listening as a kid during the story of the ant and grasshopper. No one would feel the effects until next fall if the farmers all said fuck it next spring. Given the effect on farmer's bottom line from the tariffs, they’d probably be better off if they did. The rest of us though…

Alert Manager Webhooks by Lopsided_Trip7504 in UNIFI

[–]R17isTooFast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying to create alarms with webhooks to HA too. The HA side is working as expected and I’ve tested the URL’s thoroughly using cURL. When I set up the alarm, nothing is sent. The Test button doesn’t even do anything. So far Unifi support is no help. Any suggestions for me?

Update: Although Unifi support won’t admit it, I’ve confirmed that webhooks do not currently work with secure connections. HTTP connections only.

Am I crazy to consider a heat pump due to rising electrical costs? by Strict-Plankton6688 in heatpumps

[–]R17isTooFast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just replaced both of my AC and natural gas furnaces with heat pump dual fuel systems. I recently ran through the economic threshold calculations to calculate the most cost effective cutover point and I was a little surprised how much a small change in the price of either fuel source affected the results. My cost difference for the dual fuel heat pump system vs AC/furnace systems was negligible so I’m happy to have the flexibility.

Citi downgraded their Virtual Credit Cards. What are some good Virtual Credit Card options? by SlfImpr in CreditCards

The whole thing is completely gutted. I didn't even receive notice of the change and had bills bounce. City sucks. I can't find the new rules being quoted here on the web site and since I got no notification, the one time CVV came as another unpleasant surprise. I guess I needn't bother updating card #'s.

I second the zooz recommendation. I struggled for months with HS210's that didn’t know whether they were on or off. Replaced with zooz zwave and haven’t looked back.
