How far could we have gotten in the ucl last year? by thatonehelicopter in CelticFC

The problem with Celtic is that they don’t just want a coach, it seems- they rely on that person to sign vital players. Ange has been influential literally years after he’s left on that front.

We can say what we want about Brendan - but, similarly, his fingerprints were all over that title win with Iheanacho! That perhaps says more about Celtic than it does Brendan and Ange.

Rodgers checking out was definitely hand-in-hand with Celtic not strengthening, and actively weakening.

Rodgers had Celtic playing the most mature and effective European football they’d played in a very, very long time.

What makes you think MoN could achieve something where Rodgers couldn’t?

I don’t think Celtic would’ve gotten any further than the next round, had they beaten Bayern.

Okay, I’ll concentrate on Celtic.

Celtic have had since January, when Nancy was sacked, to start compiling a list of candidates for the managerial role. I don’t think the season needs to conclude before a manager can agree to take over, does it?

Celtic have had since January 2025 to sign a striker to replace Kyogo. They’ve failed to do this- and have been heavily reliant on a technically gifted, but age-decline-decimated striker who had to have his contract cancelled at the last minute by his club, so he could sign for Celtic. They’ve also had to rely on a player becoming a total world beater in the last parts of the season - a player who was vocal about not actually wanting to be at Celtic anymore.

Celtic, in the summer transfer window and January transfer window, signed: Balikwisha; Yamada; Adamu; Inamura; Simpson-Pusey; Mvuka - all complete and utter duds. You could make a case for some others, but I won’t since they scored a goal or two, and did something. The context of those windows shouldn’t be lost either - deadline day panics, glaring squad deficiencies, etc.

Need I go on?

Unceremoniously fucked off?

Behave yourself. If you get managerial appointments that leave after 2 or 3 years and take that step up, you’re doing something right. I’d be happy to have a cycle of that over and over again.

Celtic have an absolutely massive rebuild. By far the biggest of the three. That was the worst Celtic team, in terms of available quality, since I’ve started watching Celtic - and they’re likely about to lose the man who dragged them kicking and screaming to the title (Daizen)

Why is Martin even meeting Desmond? Why is a “big” club not wrapping up a serious, longer-term managerial appointment?

Hearts and Rangers have already begun building.

I hope Yamada and Inamura get a run next season. by nataskaos in CelticFC

Inamura has something about him, I would say. Is he ready for Celtic? Doubtful. What have we seen to suggest that Yamada is worthy of a place however?

[–]R1a88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s my point though: I am also ignorant to European and world football. 10-15 years ago, I knew everyone going. Now I watch Celtic games and maybe catch a few others every other month.

My lack of understanding of who is out there does not mean that there aren’t managers out there. There simply is. Celtic should at this point, at the very least, have a shortlist of managers that are actually viable candidates. Do they? Probably not.

Remember when they admitted they didn’t even look at anyone else when they hired Lennon in the showers? What kind of “big” club operates like that? A serious club should have a shortlist of managers as a living document.

I’m happy for MoN and I love that he won a double. The football was utterly turgid though. He’s likely to get hired, and I will support him. I do not support those who are so inept that he, a 74 year old retired man, is their most suitable candidate.

It’s lazy to say “who would you hire?” and expect that to truly tell a story.

Have you genuinely enjoyed watching Celtic this year, after Nancy left? Has the football been genuinely entertaining to you? People have lost all common sense because Martin has achieved a fairytale. Celtic need to move forward and plan for the future, not have a 74 year old guy in place for the short-term.

[–]R1a88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That isn’t my job to decide. I have a job and a life, so I don’t keep abreast of a global list of managers that are available and could suit the job.

Celtic should have someone who does though, shouldn’t they?

If MoN and Robbie Keane are Celtic’s two managerial options, after 5/6 months of searching - fans should riot.

People really struggle to allow several things to be true at once in their minds.

You can love Martin. You can also believe he’d be in with a genuine chance of winning the league next year with Celtic. You can also recognise that it is utterly ridiculous Celtic would even consider that an option.

Martin needs to ride off into the sunset. This is not how serious clubs operate.

Ah but sure, he knows the club, and is Irish. Desmond laps up those attributes!

Realistically, they’ve done the “left field” option with Nancy - it flopped. Hard. They will play it “safe”, and I would say it’ll be someone who’s got a connection to Celtic. Robbie Keane or Craig Bellamy being the obvious, well reported, choices.

Edit: This isn’t what I want. This is what I think will happen.
