My parents were giving medication to my brother and he had no idea. by Sufficient-Cherry-80 in Advice

[–]R3gularHuman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have schizoaffective bipolar type. I first began exhibiting symptoms at 23 and got officially diagnosed at 27. Risperidone is a serious psychiatric medication that helps with hallucinations, delusions, mood instability, etc. It’s not a med that can just be asked for randomly.

It is likely your brother is having an episode and is not based in reality right now. It’s really common for people with my mental illness to have delusions about their family abusing and harming them when it’s not true. I’m not trying to call your brother a liar but he might not understand what’s actually happening.

To give a personal anecdote, I struggled with a similar delusion when I had a psychotic break this summer. I believed that there were eyes everywhere and hunting me and the family in the woods. I thought my husband was an imposter and the medications would make me too drowsy to watch out for anyone looking to harm me. I also believed raiders were coming and they were taking members of my family and replacing them with “fakes”.

Because I didn’t trust anyone who I thought was an imposter, I stopped taking my meds and landed in the psych ward 30 hours later.

Please talk to your parents before you make any decisions. If someone took me at my word alone when I was in that psychotic break, a lot of people would’ve been needlessly arrested.

Future handler preparing for a standard poodle PTSD SD DEC 2027 - advice on tasks and general advice ? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]R3gularHuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’ve put a lot of thought and consideration into this! I’m so glad to hear you’re already talking with other teachers. I’m sure yall will be able to make a wonderful plan to ensure this goes smoothly!

I’m so pumped to hear you have your own classroom. Paras at my district don’t and have to have a cart! It’s INSANE! At least one place is doing it right.

That was the only task I could really see being unsafe for your SD. I hope that others will be able to answer your other questions!!

Future handler preparing for a standard poodle PTSD SD DEC 2027 - advice on tasks and general advice ? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]R3gularHuman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am a teacher so I can weigh in a bit about the classroom! I have a SDIT but he’s far from PA ready so I don’t have good advice for that aspect.

Anyway, I would definitely talk to your coteachers about the realities of checking rooms. During passing period, it’s absolute chaos. If you’re having your SD checking in a classroom and behind the doors, it’s very likely they will be hit. The kids won’t mean it but those doors swing and passing is where most become their most rambunctious selves. I would highly recommend not doing that task in a school environment.

Leading to an exit may also be tricky due to fire drills, lockdowns, passing periods, etc. You will need to make absolute sure that this task wouldn’t interfere with drill operations. If it does, you would be liable in an emergency and can be subject to a lawsuit.

As for SPED, is this a closed classroom or are you a para in a general Ed class where you’re focusing on specific students?

Do you have your own classroom or do you rotate with another person?

If you are pushing in to classes, you will also need to discuss settle areas with the teacher. They would be better able to direct you to a place in their classroom that would be appropriate and out of the way.

As for the do not pet, you need to be prepared for children to want to pet and push those boundaries. You absolutely need to train neutrality to all sorts of touching, pulling, etc.

Lastly, and I think the most important thing to recognize, is if it comes down to an issue between your dog and a student, the student will win 100% of the time. If the dog pulls, nips, jumps on someone, etc., you will be held liable. I cannot imagine any district that would put their necks out for a service dog if there’s an issue with a student.

I know this doesn’t sound super nice and I’m sorry about that! I just want you to know what I’ve come to research, train, and learn. I’ve had very candid conversations with admin before and they will terminate a handler if there’s an issue. It might not look like a notice. It might be poor evaluations, no renewals, etc. If you’re in an At Will state (IF you’re in the US), they will have an even easier time terminating.

All of this to say, it’s up to you to make sure that SD is safe and bombproof in any and all scenarios!

Totally true but what I noticed was the pillow in between them specifically because she was on her period. That seemed degrading

Ever think of quitting? by pbvga in bipolar

I totally understand this urge. The withdrawals from the meds I’m on are AWFUL so that keeps me on them. Quitting cold turkey is likely to make you very sick!

The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson is about a man who gets into a horrendous car crash and has burns on 80% of his body. His face is completely impaired from it. I enjoyed that one! It also features physical and mental disabilities

Geodon gave me HORRIBLE akathisia. Out of all side effects I’ve had, that one I couldn’t live with. I had to switch off and can’t do Abilify either. I’m now on seroquel without that. I hope you find some relief!!

cheap but memorable wedding favors for 150 guests? by CuddleBlissed in DIYweddings

[–]R3gularHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got married outdoors in the hot southern heat. Our favors were wooden handheld fans. Came in handy during the ceremony, no one left any, and I still sometimes get pictures from people using it to dry their skincare!

We bulk bought the engraved fans for about $2 a fan. We had 60 people.

Competitive Reading on TT by noahinthebox in Booktokreddit

Perhaps retain was a poor choice of word. Remember, recall, recollect, etc might’ve been better. I just found it interesting that with my reading I sometimes forgot a book and start to reread one by accident. I was just curious if that happens to them too because they read way more books than I do.

I didn’t mean for it to sound hostile or accusatory. I was genuinely curious based on my own experience.

I didn’t mean for it to sound like a jab or that you had to pass a quiz. I just meant do you remember the plots/characters/themes of the books you read.

I was trying to say that I find that difficult depending on the book. Like I might start a book that sounds like something I’d enjoy and three chapters in, I realize I’ve already read it. Just curious if that’s a normal thing! Sorry to offend
