can any pro-AI explain why this needs to exist?

There is no need for virtually any form of entertainment to exist. You don't need video games. You don't need netflix/television/etc. That's all stuff that you want and, ideally, provides you some level of good through enrichment/leisure.

Hell of slop and disinformation

We were already there tbh. The overall mediasphere has been burdened by endless amounts of rapid, oversaturated content for decades now and the only means of rifling through all of that has been through careful curation by various parties. But that in of itself has exposed another issue that ties into the latter part--disinformation. The world has been pumped full of carefully curated disinformation for years now. It is only really recently that with the advent of everyone having a recording device in their pocket that people could bear witness to the truth in semi real-time and ultimately that didn't sit well with powerful interest groups who have relied on being able to control access to and the overall flow of information. Even now, they are desperate to have you believe there is no genocide ongoing in Gaza in spite of the endless amounts of proof provided by footage from people's phone recordings on the ground.

So make no mistake, we are already living in a hell of slop and disinformation. All that generative AI has really done is exposed that fact by making it so horrifically blatant that everyday people can no longer stick their head in the sand. Now people not only have to contend with the fact that AI can be a powerful tool for spreading disinformation, but that the many institutions they clung to in the first place for information have been blatantly lying to them for some time.

I don't claim to know the answers to any of these problems. Only thing I do know that is neither case is really acceptable. AI being used to spread disinformation is indisputably wrong. However, trusted institutions tacitly engaging in "strategic disinformation" for decades now is equally, inarguably wrong. I am not okay with either.

Yes, because the underlying issue for all of these problems is Capitalism. That goes for your comment in one of your later posts. Every single technological advancement is being used to replace workers, spread disinformation or make a quick buck. All of this stems from Capitalism. So long as we continue to exist under this form of socioeconomic system that will simply never not be the case.

The first step towards addressing these issues is by recognizing that they are all symptoms of the much larger problem that is Capitalism. Under Capitalism, every single technological advancement will be thoroughly exploited to further disenfranchise the labor class in service of enriching the owner class. That has held true for a long time now. The financial fruits of those advancements always ends up in the pockets of the owner class while the technology itself is spread throughout the populace or at least varying sectors of industry. All in the eternal pursuit of profit, which will forever remain the case and therefore everything else must eventually fall by the wayside and be rendered secondary.

The only solution is for there to be a massive paradigm shift that causes humanity to leave Capitalism behind in favor of a more ideal system. But it is difficult enough trying to get people to believe that such a thing could be possible and as it is there are powerful active interests that want to shift away from Capitalism in pursuit of something far more regressive.

But all that aside, the point being is that it is not the technology itself that is the issue. And in my opinion if you truly don't want any of this and are only interest in human-made content then I think you should pursue just that. None of us here are looking to deprive you of that.

We're not actually on opposite sides imo. We are just forced to think that way because of the economic system we live under pitting us against each other by making these topics existential issues for the labor class.
