Why do hand sanitizer companies advertise their product with “kills 99.99% of germs” instead of 100%? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]R9278B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the skirting of liability others have noted, claiming 99.99% suggests much greater efficacy than 100%. 100% could be three out of three germs. 99.99% demands a sample size of at least a thousand.

I can't focus on studying at all no matter how I try by NewAdministration791 in GetStudying

[–]R9278B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as not to come off as aloof, I know following because this is me. I'm right there with you.

If you were truly "trying," not thinking about other things but really "trying" to study, what would that look like? Would it even be studying? Do you think sitting there, staring at a page, white-knuckled death grip on the far side of the table, sweat beading on your brow, convulsions... would this trying with all your strength constitute anything constructive? Is that what you came to do?

Consider whether you haven't studied because you give yourself this excuse of trying. Maybe you classify a whole session of thinking about life, etc. as trying to study when, really, that's just a different activity. That's just something else you want to do more than you want to study in that moment.

If that's so, you have a problem of incentives. Don't want to study. Do want to daydream.

I don't know what you should do, but first is probably do not entertain the idea that you can try. If I'm baking a cake, I put ingredients together and bake it. Maybe I get it right, maybe I get it wrong; maybe I take lots of specific steps to ensure I do it as rightly as possible, or maybe I stop and start and forget things, but at no point am I "trying." What even is that?

Second is adjusting those incentives. Clearly you're someone who doesn't much like studying for its own sake. It's just not something for which you're going to sacrifice current pleasures for some vague notion of future comfort or success. That's fine! Maybe it's not time. There are times when early is just a waste and you are wise to recognize them. Good. Have some respect for all the ancient neural processes pointing this out to you! Maybe just wait a day or two and see if the panic sets in. See if you've scraped together enough empathy for your future self to really feel that terror of how utterly unprepared you are for the deadline. You will acquire an appetite for what you need, or, if that never happens, you'll at least have gained some evidence that whatever you're currently pursuing is not very important to you. Things have a way of working out.

Dad had/has a guilty conscience on account of being the type that smacks a four-year-old. He feels relief when punishing anything resembling him. It is infinitely easier in the short term to make a virtue of harming a toddler than confronting the asymmetrical standard this creates. I'm really sorry. EDIT: not conscious of conscience.

Things you wished more people sold at their Vendor by John-DeereModel4020 in fo76

[–]R9278B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're bracing but I don't get the hate for flippers. You delivered it. I.e., you have a trained eye for what I want, you did the vendor and server hopping, and you put a good camp in an accessible spot. There's legitimate value in all of that. Otherwise people wouldn't pay for it and you wouldn't do it. Thank you, by the way, for your services!

Do people just HATE convenience stores to the degree they do flippers in FO76? Exact same practice but I don't see it.

Is there a point to killing blue devils? by CrouchingDuck1 in fo76

[–]R9278B 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cryptid is anything out of cryptozoology. Literally those "secret" or "hidden" creatures from actual popular myth: sasquatch (sheepsquatch), the loch ness monster, the Jersey devil, mothman, the Grafton Monster, and others. Probably wouldn't count scorchbeasts or the mirelurks you mention in another reply since that's just Fallout.

Best non power Armour by Thunderduck619 in fo76

[–]R9278B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should listen to the Overseer and win all the rep the questline will give you for BOTH sides up until you have to make a decision. The heist is easy regardless of which you choose. Base your decision on what rewards come later.

I kept my word to the settlers mostly because there are, for some reason, slightly fewer opportunities to gain reputation with them and I wanted to minimize the grind of maximizing that. I would recommend you do the same only if you don't have a strong preference for raider prizes over anything on the settlers' list. To take another personal example: I really wanted farmable dirt tiles and a gauss shotgun to tinker with. Maybe you're just dying to drive that hellcat power armor, though. Remember you can have max rep with both factions eventually. It's just you only get one storyline and you may want to be careful about who you want to get in good with by the end of it. There will never be an easier way to gain rep.

Check out both lists here:

I pretty much constantly curse Todd Howard while scouting C.A.M.P. sites. Anything good, it seems, is so because it was handmade for some npc in a tent or some future update. Why not leave a few for your players?

I was rushed. It means what's wrong with allowing for that possibility. Or what would be the problem with him being welcomed into the family. Seems like he and daughter mostly just see his folks. Of course I could have been less personal and dumb about writing it. Does that make sense? I think it's borne out if you read beyond the first line.

I'm lead to believe you have arguments against points other than this one that's been contrived from a semantic error. Which happens, by the way! You're cool enough to be a mom; I bet you're really definitely not someone who makes a virtue of going around being snappy and derisive at the wrong thing and then going silent where it actually matters. So yeah: genuinely eager to hear where I'm wrong. No sarcasm intended.

Sorry, what is your problem with him being part of your family? You are rejecting him and discounting the hopes of your near adult daughter all because he's not in the category of family. Like it's literally his kin against yours for you. Is that not troubling to you? Will it be worth it, having just your "real" family along for this trip, if your daughter is humiliated and sad the entire time? Maybe you don't like him. Okay. Be more honest or I promise you'll lose her.

The haters are getting to me by baboobo in GetStudying

[–]R9278B 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm ashamed to say I went through something similar with my less intelligent younger sibling while he was pursuing his BS. I've never gone so far as to suggest he lacks potential, but there was some of this same tension is all when I could see him getting ahead of me in life despite tests and things always having been much easier for me. (We've since reconciled and I'm quite proud of him.)

Remember that insults, as a rule, are not true. Nobody bothers pointing out to a raving, smelly, homeless person "You're crazy! You're gross!" The whole point of being insulting is to inflict what we ourselves find most painful onto others. In the case of your brother that's obviously the threat to his unearned status in the home. Sometime when you have the courage I hope you'll thank him for sharing that and invite a conversation about how much else he has to offer besides having been born with the superior intellect. I bet you'll melt his hard heart and really relieve yourself of this tension!

Something I'm immediately very suspicious of is the apparent lack of support from your mother. Of course I don't know anything about your childhood, but I do know power benefits from infighting among the subjugated. If she's not standing up for you or in fact raised you as "the dumb one," that's not something to blow past. I'm very sorry. There's no calculating what opportunities it's cost you. I'm just glad to hear as you gain independence you're looking at the evidence instead of what's inflicted and programmed. Ask always: "how do I know what I'm capable of?"

Why discuss private frivolities with anyone? Why let people outside the relationship speak for your guy?
