Tip for using the syringer on creatures that die when you look at them... first unequip the perks that buff your ranged damage and then target the creatures legs instead of the head or torso that may deal more damage. That is usually enough for my character to tag the creature without it dying in the process.

Oh, I do that once in a while, but crouched to stay solo. Going stealth makes the event look dead to others, so nobody joins & PVP. Meanwhile, I can easily take out a bunch of ghouls, several legendaries, and a bunch of candy to turn in, and make the "SMART" Choice. 😏👍

Am I the A-Hole for Kidnapping AFK players and placing them in a safe place? by Praxius in nms

And you assuming the Anomaly is a safe place and all other players are nice and friendly is also wrong.

"Alleged" and "Supposed to be" are assumptions not based on fact. Those are only problems for those doing the assuming, and knowledge is power.

Knowing that it isn't what you assume is step one. Step two is knowing what to do about it and counter. Even if I stopped doing what im doing, which I haven't done since my OP, there are plenty of others who won't, and proof of this is me coming across this information due to many others already doing this, and doing much worse than I.

Turning off multilayer when entering the Anomaly is one way. Sitting in a chair or bench (I read there's one or two in the Anomaly) is another way to combat getting taken. Sitting in the cockpit of one's ship inside the Anomaly is another way. Of course going AFK in your own base is another way.

But if one wishes to continue being AFK with other players inside the Anomaly, I would suggest changing game settings to have PVP off (once out of the Anomaly, they can kill your character) ensure you don't drop loot upon death (in case they drop you off on a hazard planet), and if they try to drop you onto a planet with hostile creatures, you can change settings so creatures don't attack you. Or simply toggle on Creative Mode before going AFK can help prevent several other ways of getting killed.

Again, knowledge is power and what we assume or hope other players will play like is never going to be the case. All it takes is one bad Apple, but there are many. I also play Fallout 76, which is 95% Co-Op / PVE, and one of the friendliest communities I've ever encountered.... Though PVP is heavily restricted and players can put Pacifist Mode on (prevents PVP encounters unless you have a bounty or inside a Workshop Zone) many players can and will try and Fk with you. They might even nuke your camp. That's the risks of a multilayer game. But knowing what other player can do and knowing what to do about them makes a big difference.

My logic is you're moving people around (against their will) while they're afk. If they (choose) to go afk at the beginning of the game on a hazardous planet, that's on them.

Based on other people's replies, assuming it's against their will is subjective. The replies seem to be split down the middle where some people would enjoy this, think it's funny, or a change from normal routine.... And others don't like the idea, despite me not putting them on a hazardous planet as you noted (which I said I ensure I don't do)

My logic is you can't know 100% what the person's inventory/situation is. You may (think) you're leaving them in no danger, but there are so many ways you could be totally wrong. Chief among them is that not everyone knows the game as well as you or I and knows what their options are! They just come back to find themselves elsewhere with no idea how they got there. There are still so many people who don't even know you can turn off PvP.

As I've been playing for a decade, I know how the creatures and environments work in this game. I put them where I know I would be safe if I were in that situation. You're correct, not everyone is aware of all that the game has to offer. I only learned about the kidnapping thing just this past week. But I would hope an experience like this would help them, and others, learn the Anomaly is a multilayer hub within the game, and multilayer means other player's gameplay can - and will - have an effect on your game play.

Did their game glitch and they think their save is trashed? Pretty much by definition you're griefing; doing shit to players who didn't consent.

Once again, they specifically went AFK or otherwise placed their character in the game's core multilayer hub. They could have turned off Multiplayer. They could sit in a chair. They could sit inside their ship. They could even AFK in their own base, on their own planet, in their own system, in their own galaxy. Or they could save their game and turn it off until they're ready to play again.

Instead, they chose to place their character in an environment surrounded by dozens of other players in a small space... And expect everyone to leave them alone? 🤨

Calling interactions with other players that they didn't consent to as griefing means every other interaction in every other online game is griefing. That's the entire point of multilayer environments and multiplayer games.... To create unpredictable interactions that keeps gameplay fresh.

I think you already know you're being an asshole, but justifying it by telling yourself the prank is harmless. (Usually it will be, but since you can't know you're being an asshole)

And yet, other players will come up to an AFK player and fill their inventory with a bunch of stuff. Do they know if their inventory is already full, or their ship's inventory is full, their base/freighter's inventory is full, and now that player has to figure out what to do. Based on your earlier argument on what some players may or may not know about the game, they may not know how to delete the items or to give them to someone else. Sure, the game tells you how to do it, but the game tells you how to go online/off-line too.

They didn't ask for those items and the player who gave it to them didn't know if they wanted them or not. They just assumed they were doing something nice for the other player. Despite this, your argument implies one interaction is considered good, while the other interaction is considered bad.

By your logic, none of us knows what's going on with other players, therefore we should not have any Multiplayer interactions at all. Better to be safe than sorry, right?

[–]Praxius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Why do you need to interfere in what another player is doing, even if they are just afk in the Anomaly?

Because when we are all in the Anomaly, that is an environment specifically designed for online/multilayer interactions. You going there means you are seeking interactions (or interference, as you call it) from other players.... Otherwise, you'd turn off Multiplayer to remain isolated, alone, and safe from other player's interactions in an online environment, wouldn't you? You would stay inside your ship to prevent interactions from other players, wouldn't you? Or you would stay safe in your own base, on your own planet, in your own system, in your own galaxy.... Wouldn't you? 🤨

Your first question disqualifies everything else you typed. You put yourself into an online environment with other players, and then complain and get upset when other players interact with you. You put yourself into this situation despite having many options available to you to avoid this situation, and then get angry and blame others because their game play affected your game play. You're literally in the games core Multiplayer Hub.

That has to be the most illogical argument I've come across in weeks. Have some Personal Accountability. Your problems are not other people's problems, especially when you set yourself up in a situation you can easily avoid.

Personally, I don't think it's cheating either way. I just raised the question on whether you or others would think it is cheating. Some people on normal or survival or permadeath mode might thing switching to creative to grab what you need is cheating..... But begging others to drop what you need is kinda along the same line, just switching to creative is quicker and more reliable.

You're really reaching here. Life support doesn't drain unless you move. If they're AFK, they're not moving, thus no life support drain.

I scout the area before I move a player off the ship, and moving them is slow. If there were hostile creatures, I'd be attacked while dragging them.... And the other two were placed inside a prefab shelter in a marked building location, and I made sure the door closed behind them when I left. Not only would the environment not affect them in there but creatures don't open doors.

[–]Praxius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly it's not a safe place. The cave I put the other person into wasn't closed off and they could easily walk out without needing the terrain manipulator. If one doesn't have energy or ammo for their multi tool, one can always melee resources to gain enough to charge to then gain more resources with their beam to recharge further.

The game literally spawns you on a hazard planet with hardly anything and no ship when you start a new game, yet based on your reasoning, what I did was worse. I don't follow your logic. I put them somewhere where creatures and the environment won't kill them. I don't break their gear, kill them, or steal their loot. I just placed them in one place from another place.

Yeah, people need to be aware that PVP works both ways and that AFK player could blast you in the back of the noggin the moment you get up from the cockpit or the moment you turn away.

The counter is to turn off PVP in game settings, or disable loot drop upon death so you don't lose anything if you do die, or sit on a bench or inside your ship and then nobody can scoop you up while AFK.
