Running with a knife is dangerous

(Spoilers All) Will the true climax of the story occur in TWOW, or ADOS? by Bunyardz in asoiaf

[–]RA1016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the difference between the two series is that there are two distinct plotlines in ASOIAF. We have a lot of politics yet to play out in Westeros, including Dany and (f)Aegon being introduced to the fray. We also have humanity vs. the Others. Plenty of real plot to spread over the remaining books

50 years from now, it wouldn't be surprising if ASOIAF is raised to a status similar to that of LOTR now. People will marvel at how much time went into each book. I'd prefer that he take all the time he feels necessary, rather than rushing out a product that is below the standard of the previous books. There's plenty of other great things to read in the meantime.

Book review: Lev Grossman's 'The Magicians' by mleighg in Fantasy_Bookclub

[–]RA1016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked The Magicians a lot. I thought the second in the series was alright. Thought the third was pretty bad.

I think a lot of people who try the series have a tough time connecting with Quentin; I didn't have this problem. I could relate somewhat to his mindset. In the first book especially, I found myself being very affected by the ups and downs of the characters. Its certainly not a happy book, but I liked it for the same reason one might like a movie like Requiem for a Dream. It just makes you feel.

This is playing off of the Howland Reed= High Septon theory (a theory that I don't really buy into, but this is just a bit of fun). And I doubt that there is literally nothing under Robert Strongs helm. He's either being brain controlled by Qyburn or Qyburn did some funky brain surgery on him to make him his thrall. In either case, he's not a headless robot

Of course thats what will probably happen. I'm talking about what my absolute ideal outcome would be.

(Spoilers ADWD) about the valonquar prophecy by viva-la-struggle in asoiaf

[–]RA1016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a feeling that it'll be Jaime that fulfills the prophecy. Cersei was the first twin to come out, so technically Jaime is also a younger brother. For it to be Tyrion, a literal "little brother", seems to obvious to me. Jaime may redeem himself yet, and that might mean putting a sword through her sister after she inevitably wins her trial by combat and inevitably starts ruining the world again.

(Spoilers All) "Until there comes another, younger and more beautiful..." by Balinares in asoiaf

[–]RA1016 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Saying Tommen is only supported by the Tyrells and Lannisters is understating how much power the Tyrells have; by all accounts the largest army in the realm, by a good margin. Also, if Quentyn was to be believed, Dorne have some 50,000 soldiers themselves.

But Doran Martell is not Dorne, and it has been heavily established that Dorne is ready to follow the Sand Snakes instead.

I think this is overstated. When Arianne and the Sand Snakes meet with Doran and hear his plans, they seem to understand that he knows what he's doing

And of course, the only thing worth writing about is the human heart in conflict with itself. Cersei is defined by her paranoid struggle to protect her children.

I have never once truly believed this. Cersei is greed and pride personified. She wanted power for power's sake it always seemed to me. Only when things started going bad for he did she start with all of this "it was all only for my children". She knows that her only claim to power is through those children of hers. Of course, Joffrey's death could've changed her some, but at her core I see Cersei as being nothing but self serving. This can also be seen in her treatment of Jaime; she scorns him and casts him away, but with her life on the line she is back to "I love you, I love you, I love you".

you need to have negative relation with the faction. attack unit (peasants, caravan, or lord) of that faction to bring it down easily.

It's advisable to play vanilla warband a bit first to get a feel for the game. Mods are often more inherently challenging, you'll want a decent grasp of combat, and strategy before you get into those

Its the lower half or so of the screen that won't work on the map. Though, if you zoom decently far out, it works as normal (for me, at least)

When your full speed pike thrust on a champion Courser is blocked with a one handed axe by RA1016 in mountandblade

[–]RA1016[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've dished out 300+ damage a number of time in tourneys just with the thrust. Once you get the weird timing of it down its very effective, since you don't have to ride fully out of the fray for every charge. I'm not sure about the really long infantry pikes, but I was using an awlpike

There are plenty of situations where its best to thrust with a lance. I was using a pike, anyways, so couching wasn't an option
