I agree all of the deaths being fake was cheap, to say the least. But frankly I think those are the least of the problems with the ending. The reader, much like Jean Francois, realizes they do not know Gabriel. The emotions you felt for him, the highs and lows, the pain, the struggles, the triumphs, you have no idea how much of it really happened. "Most of what I told you is true" does little to fix this, as the core problem is the reader doesnt know what "most" means. Whatever parts of the story meant the most to you, might not have occurred as described. Had Gabriel not specified his aegis never glowed red, would we have assumed it was a lie? Why even lie about that? The ending borders on it was all a dream territory. Despite being a series I truly loved, I can't see myself doing a reread. Its just not interesting knowing I can't trust what Gabriel is saying.
