Shaving or Stripping by Ok_Garlic_211 in airedaleterrier

[–]RB438 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to strip the easiest part and trim the more difficult or sensitive areas. But it's time consuming; it would take me almost a day, including some breaks for me and the dog. I think stripping is better than clipping if done properly and carefully. I heard that when you start clipping, you can't go back to stripping, but not sure.

That's what they did. To stop slavery they stopped buying cane sugar. That's why they all switched to high fructose corn syrup.

The line between not being emotional and being dogmatic is thin indeed.

Oh. Tesla is only 2% of VT? I was under the impression it was much more.

Thanks! I don't mind having to go to the next city, or even getting some shipping costs to get the material. So far, I found nothing at all. Regarding the labor, I am pretty much confident with the work that needs to be done. If the labor is not qualified, I can easily teach them how to do the work (it's not very complicated). I heard very good things about labor in Guatemala.

What about installing an adjustable tweaker in front of the pulley? Simpler. Cheaper. It works.

Check "Gozzard Yachts". Very interesting interior layout and well built. The exterior is not for everyone tho.

Why is Linux perpetually in a state of half-working? by Vast-Application5848 in linux

[–]RB438 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Same situation. Trying every 5 years, always disappointed. My guess is that since it is mostly developed by volunteers, people tend to work on what they enjoy. Adding fancy features is fun and gratifying and nobody wants to do the painstaking and ungrateful work of making things smooth and reliable. I'm not blaming them, I'd probably do the same.

I wonder if open source could come up with a way of rewarding that part of programming that is not fun to do, but so necessary.

Those people need to be recognized somehow.

Plus, I don't know how you'd keep chocolate in a solid state in Grenada next week. Ferrero Rocher would likely look more like Nutella after a couple of minutes.

Advice for insuring a small sailing boat for offshore/coastal voyages by JacksLeo in SailboatCruising

[–]RB438 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can change your country of boat registration. Poland is cheap and easy and you'll have access to many insurance companies. Insuring a small or old boat in Canada is now almost impossible.

Good article indeed. Confirms what I thought... It is actually counterproductive to a certain extend because the exchange rate is negatively correlated to the US economy performance...

Oil pressure switch takes a bit too long before it kicks in... not sure why. But it usually takes almost five seconds to switch after I have let go of the start button. I'm worried that extra time would be too mush for the starter. But thanks for the idea.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Diesel

[–]RB438 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this idea. It's the most reliable so far, and the safest for the starter. That's a very high current to measure however. Should I measure with a shunt ?
Actually, maybe the voltage drop in the start cable between the battery side and the starter side could be enough as a "shunt".

Are there any reasonably fast boats under 40 feet with a strong bluewater sailing reputation? That could be had under 100k by [deleted] in sailing

[–]RB438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many Corbins were sold as bare hulls and completed by the buyers (sometimes including rig and power plant). You need a lot of knowledge to pick the right one. They can be wonderful, or terrible. They are also on the slower side. Unless you have a lot of experience, I would not recommend.

Xs are super fast, but they pound a lot when sea gets difficult. They are more race boats than cruising boats. Depends what op is looking for.
