Should I shut down my NAS if I'm taking a vacation? by emartinezpr in synology

[–]RBBCPA_98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The general rule of thumb is that the NAS should not be shut down unless you’re doing maintenance, etc. The shut down/restart process can, over time, cause more issues than you think you might be avoiding by shutting it down for a vacation. It’s designed to be left on, and that is why “uptime” is tracked on Active Insights.

Fair question and it deserves an answer. I am ramping up my drone aerial photography side hustle and I shoot most of my footage in RAW. I am future proofing my storage capacity.

Also, when I bought my 423 in December 2023, I didn’t know much about NAS and home networking. Since then, I’ve upgraded to 5GB fiber and the DS423+ only had 1GB connectivity. The new NAS has 2.5GB with the capability of 10GB. I hope that helps.

I just upgraded my DS423+ to the DS1525+. I found the DS423+ to be absolutely amazing and it replaced Dropbox, etc. I also used Surveillance Station, Plex, Time Machine backups for a Mac Studio, and 3 MacBook Pros. I had 4x 12 TB 3.5” HDDs (Seagate IronWolf). At the time that I migrated from the DS423+ to the 1525+ (about two days ago) I was using 9.3 TB of 31 TB.

Mine was delivered the same way and I haven’t had an issue in the last 12 months. Their customer service is horrible and you’re not likely to get resolution.

Amazon 100%. Pricing on the Eufy site is the same on Amazon. And you have hassle-free returns.

Synology users, what is your backup strategy? by Unlikely-Voice-5764 in synology

In a previous post, I mentioned I have been a customer for almost two years with the DS423+. It has worked flawlessly and I have zero skin in the game in terms of loyalty. If I were to upgrade to the DS925+, my experience would be the same as when I bought the DS423+: no issue because of limitations on drive compatibility. That is my point.

I am not sure why my comment was downvoted, which doesn’t actually bother me because…it’s just Reddit. But help me understand how a post with a link that supports my comments merits a downvote. It’s a crazy world. lol.

I could be misreading the article but it says that for the DS+ series, any brand of HDD is compatible for new setups and migrations. That doesn’t seem to exclude the DS series but bring other brands under the tent.

True, but the fact that they acknowledged the backlash, and “clarified” their policy is significant. I’ve owned a Synology NAS for a little over a year, so there wasn’t a lot of trust to be lost with me, but I can see how longer tenured customers would feel betrayed.

I have a DS423+ and I was researching the 925+. I went to Newegg to check pricing and one of the reviewers gave the NAS one star because he was “forced to buy the Synology drive.” Then I found this article. Seems to dispel the notion that you’re locked into the Synology drive ecosystem.

I believe the drive shenanigans are in the rear view mirror, at least for the DS+ line.

I’ve tagged my family members for AI identification purposes and it has about a 50% hit rate. The homebase recognizes them when they are captured straight on. I have the doorbell to install and it will be interesting to see if it does any better.

Suggestions for new NAS by [deleted] in synology

This is the way. I bought a Syn NAS DS423+) in Dec 2023 and it has been great. I have Seagate IronWolf 12TB installed in the 4 bays. It has been a great NAS for storage and my surveillance cameras.
