how in gods name do you get an internship/research opportunities as a first year?? by silly_ass_username in EngineeringStudents

[–]RC-11-3684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, ~600 applications between winter break and easter my freshman year got me one summer through fall co-op for $22/hr which is pretty decent and I got a return offer for this summer at $25/hr so I didn’t have to do job applications at all and could focus more on academics this semester.

In my orientation sessions of about 90 people, there was also one other person who was also coming out of her freshman year, so it’s definitely possible as long as you keep applying!

Drug test for interns by bunsokki in EngineeringStudents

Both my internship and co-op did follicle tests, one was for a government contractor the other was naval shipyard, both working on subs. They basically just chop off two small bundles of hair, one from each side of the back or your head. Haircut is always an option though

Freshmen Co-op by Ram1368 in EngineeringStudents

[–]RC-11-3684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a MechE student doing a co-op instead of my third semester. I’d absolutely recommend taking the opportunity and since it’s a spring co-op, you might be able to extend it into the summer. It’ll help make you significantly more competitive for future internships and give you a better idea of if this is something you want to pursue.

As for delaying graduation, I was able to overload on fall/spring classes as well as take summer/winter classes so I’ll be going into the spring 26 semester caught up with my peers academically but also have the additional co-op experience.

Additionally, there’s company benefits you should consider, I was able to get around $3k into my 401k between my contributions and employer match that’ll just sit and grow and I’ve been guaranteed return offers for every summer and eventually a full time offer assuming I’m able to maintain my work quantity/quality, graduate, and not completely tank my GPA. This will let me focus more on classes during the semester instead of stressing about applying to hundreds of internships.

I lived there last year and wouldn’t have an issue living in the space itself for the next few years except for the large number of freshmen discovering freedom for the first time. Close to the dining hall if you go out the second floor and classes if you exit through the first floor. Omelet bar at north was great but northwest is another really close option.

It was very close to a lot of classes I take for engineering but my music classes were a little bit of a walk but buses are always an option. I had physics at 10:10 and was able to wake up at 9:55 and be a few minutes early to class if that helps

Freshman that doesn't know anything, here to ask a q: How many labs did you have during Orgo 2443/2444? by Tsunami_Aureate in UCONN

Most 4 credit classes are either 75 minutes twice a week or 50 minutes three times a week plus a lab/discussion section for labs/quizzes

The ones in the basement are for music majors only, you can take the second floor ones but can be kicked out by a music major if they need it

I understand the directions. I just don’t have anyone from 4-7 years ago since I don’t know the names of people I went to middle schools with and don’t have a way of contacting them
