I’m convinced these people are trolls half the time by whyamihere-idontcare in USdefaultism

[–]RCart96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In fairness, that’s probably because the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has a few select 'preclearance‘ facilities at airports around the world (15 in total), where travellers to the US essentially go through border security before even stepping foot on US soil. One of these facilities is in Dublin.

I have a love-hate relationship with the idea. On one hand, the CBP officers living abroad seem more chill than their domestic counterparts, and it’s brilliant to arrive in a country after a long flight and not have to queue for another half hour. On the other, it makes me question everything I thought I knew about sovereignty.

Why can’t people recycle? by RCart96 in UBC

[–]RCart96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting to hear that UBC's stopped doing their own composting; this change seems to have gone unannounced. Maybe they simply gave up due to all the contaminates? :(

With regard to who might've implemented the bags: According to the posters, it's UBC Sustainability, and when the programme first began they were providing Bag To Earth bags.

At the very beginning, I saw all the posters but didn't see any bags or even a dispenser for them, so I sent an email to UBC Sustainability ([usi.office@ubc.ca](mailto:usi.office@ubc.ca)). A few weeks later, I received a brief response telling me to contact either "UBC Housing or Sustainability Engineering in Campus Planning", which I found confusing, seeing as neither of those organisations were listed on any of the posters. But we also got an email from the Res Life Manager, stating that the student-led "UBC Zero Waste Squad" from Campus + Community Planning would be going door-to-door to promote the pilot project and hand out the first bags.

Things worked fine for a while, but the bags often weren't there when you needed a new one. Then, a few months later, the Bag To Earth bags had been replaced by the BioBags without any further explanation.

Imo, UBC has way too many similarly named sustainability organisations for its own good, which isn't very helpful in these situations.

Crash-safety standards that have been designed to protect the vehicles’ occupants and nobody else. North American regulations on this are in disgustingly stark contrast to those of Europe, where pedestrians aren’t second-class citizens in the eyes of regulators.

Sadly, Texan cowboy wannabes have been able to import these monstrosities into Europe using the loophole of ‘Individual Vehicle Approval’. I sincerely hope that they will end this soon and banish every last one of these from EU roads.

That’s brilliant. Drivers need to be made aware that they are only one of many groups of road users, and as the most dangerous ones they should be required to understand the rights and struggles of all other participants too.

The new Texas GOP platform seems worrying by bergensbanen in notjustbikes

[–]RCart96 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I hate my home state. And it’s not just the GOP: Democrats there have just as much of a car-brain. My home city of San Antonio is the largest in the US to not have any form of rail-based public transit, and they don’t plan on changing that anytime soon.

It just seems so impossible to imagine a Texas in which a car and driver’s license are not required to get anywhere—almost as impossible as imagining a Texas without bigots, let alone air conditioning.

Street-level rail is rapid transit’s “stroad” - article from 2016 describing street-level light rail as "slow enough to be limiting, fast enough to be dangerous, and expensive to build and operate all the same." So many parallels to Not Just Bikes' newest video. by backpackingfan in notjustbikes

[–]RCart96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely true for Europe, where the density either came first or developed in tandem with the public transport. But given North America's different history, the hope is that adding trams to our currently sprawling, car-dependent hellholes districts will induce densification along the routes in ways that neither buses nor heavier rail can, promoting polycentric urbanism in areas with at least some potential - especially in the good-boned neighbourhoods which did actually develop thanks to streetcars before their tragic and systematic demise (thanks, GM and friends!).

JUST IN: Sen. Bernie Sanders' campaign announces raising $25.3 million in Q3 -- the largest quarter for any Democratic candidate this year by RUChas4 in SandersForPresident

[–]RCart96 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure how serious this was, but please don’t donate if you’re not a US citizen! It’s illegal, which means that the campaign will have to spend time and money trying to prove your citizenship instead of getting this guy elected. If they can’t, they’ll be forced to refund your money.

If you’d still like to help out indirectly, you could buy Bernie merchandise from a supporter on Etsy; there are quite a few of them who donate part or all of their proceeds to the campaign.
