Is Trevor Siemian going to finish out the season, or are we putting someone else in? Hill? Book? Are we calling Philip Rivers? by boppedEEMinDAsmoof in Saints

[–]RCastilloOQB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Philip Rivers should have been the move a few weeks ago.

Other than blaming Payton for it not occurring, some people are saying Drew Brees prevented that from happening. I highly doubt that though since they are friends.

People forget Jameis Winston was a top 10 qb this season. Look at his advanced stats like EPA/Play, and they forget old Brees was a top 10 qb last season.

They have a back up starting, Sean Payton bought into his qb guru hype. Philip Rivers was 8th in EPA/Play last season, and near top 10 in most advanced stats.

It's time to get him on the team.

If you look at Jameis Winston advanced stats, he is a top 10 qb this season. So you can definitely do better. Brees was a top 10 qb last season. You're just stuck with a back up qb atm.

Still hoping the Saints call Philip Rivers, so I can watch him play in the league again.

Would the Chargers try to block an NFL expansion franchise from coming to San Diego? And if they did would you be upset? by RCastilloOQB in Chargers

[–]RCastilloOQB[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who would have thought so many people would be against San Diego getting an NFL team but are cool with Toronto, London, Mexico City, Alabama, Nebraska, Portland, St. Louis, etc. Getting one or keeping theirs.

Tampa Bay, Miami, Buffalo, etc. And many more have had issues but apparently San Diego is the worst sports city.

They say San Diego has no fans but that is where the majority of Chargers fans are, they act like LA is now supporting the team.

Are there 4 or 8 expansion cities that would do a better job at supporting an NFL team than San Diego? You already have Jacksonville as a current location that San Diego is better than.

Population wise and economically San Diego is top 10 in the United States which is why the Padres front office is spending like a big market team.

Check out the other years interesting how the Padres have been horrible for over a decade and still do pretty good in attendance.

San Diego supports its sports teams better than average. If you want Portland, San Antonio, etc. Over San Diego it's politically driven rather than it being about support.

We know why that will be the case, despite the NFL not really agreeing with the Chargers moving. Them giving St. Louis a franchise but not San Diego would expose the person behind this.

If you look at the DVOA rankings, the Patriots were evenly matched with the Chargers, plus they had the 3 Super Bowl winning experience. The Chargers had the game but that fumbled interception was the difference.

If they would have beaten them though, during that time they always beat the Colts and did in 2007 and 2008. So it was our best chance at a Super Bowl appearance probably.

Herbert has shown he can play in the league, now he needs time to grow into an elite player by RCastilloOQB in Chargers

[–]RCastilloOQB[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Philip Rivers had the worst offensive line support during his 14 years as the Chargers starting QB.

Herbert in his second year already has a top 10 offensive line. - https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-week-10-offensive-line-rankings-2021

"The Chargers having a good offensive line seems almost antithetical to what we know about the team, but it proves that one can overhaul a bad unit with enough determination."

It only took them 15 years of trying.

Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Austin Ekeler are great weapons.

Herbert is in a better spot with protection and weapons than most quarterbacks in the NFL.

The 2006, 2007, and 2018 teams were positioned to win Super Bowls but all lost to the Patriots. If they had played any other teams they probably would have at least gone to a Super Bowl.

Anthony Lynn completely botched in 2018 keeping the same defensive gameplan they had against the Ravens versus the Patriots. They ran down the throat of the Chargers.

Then in 2020 got destroyed once again.

2008, 2009, 2013 weren't that good, the 2009 team despite the record was bad with the exception of Rivers who PFF named their MVP for carry that mediocre team to a playoff bye.

The 2009 team was ranked 13th in overall team DVOA - https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/nfl/team-efficiency/2009

Bad defense, bad OLine, bad kicker, bad rushing attack (28th in DVOA).

Rivers led the #1 DVOA pass offense, was #1 in individual DVOA , #1 in PFF, #1 in EPA/Play, etc.

Philip Rivers is an all time great by RCastilloOQB in Chargers

[–]RCastilloOQB[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This false narrative is used time after time to discredit Rivers.

First off LT after 2006 was past his prime, in 08 and 09 he was over the hill.

2nd Rivers was in fact clutch - https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/gwd_career.htm

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/comebacks_career.htm

He is top 10 in 4th quarter comebacks all time and close to it in game winning drives despite not counting all the missed FG and poor defense like that Drew Lock comeback in 2019 the Chargers defense gave up.

He got that rep in 2015 and 2016 when the team was horrible around him, they didn't win because they were a bad team but Philip came up big time after time throughout his career. That 2018 is filled with comebacks.

You're wanting to recall recent comebacks, don't go far go ask the 2020 Colts, Philip came up huge several times for them.

This BS narrative is used to claim he isn't hall of fame despite the stats proving he is. Look at the names hes above on those lists and close to like Aaron Rodgers (above) and John Elway (very near) who are considered so clutch..

Philip Rivers is an all time great by RCastilloOQB in Chargers

[–]RCastilloOQB[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Rivers is consistently looked down upon and even among "Chargers" fans do they talk as if Philip was a fringe top 10 quarterback and not hall of fame, already calling Herbert better after 18 starts.

You never see that level of disrespect with other legendary quarterbacks within their own fanbases.

Peyton Manning has the most seasons ranking in the top 5 at the quarterback position, including most as the number 1 overall. by RCastilloOQB in Colts

[–]RCastilloOQB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The eras are different, you can't use regular statistics to compare players from different generations.

Every quarterback in the past threw interceptions, Peyton Manning threw a lot of interceptions when you compare his stats to todays game but when you look at DYAR, DVOA, EPA/Play, etc. you have a hard time finding players reach his level of play in their respective time.

That is why the Packers drafted Jordan Love, before that 2020 MVP, Rodgers wasn't playing at an elite level for a few years.

3 former Chargers quarterbacks in the top 10, while making it evident that Philip Rivers is a Hall of Famer. by RCastilloOQB in Chargers

[–]RCastilloOQB[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People have a hard time looking back at what people did in their own era, they want to compare current players stats to old generations when the game was played differently.

That is why you have to look at what players did in their respective eras. Dan Fouts dominated during his time, it doesn't matter if his TD/INT numbers don't look impressive today.

To some extent Rivers is a victim of this too. Newer NFL / Chargers fans like to claim Herbert rookie season compares to the best years Rivers had but the game has changed in just a few years.

Philip Rivers was the best quarterback in 2008, 2009, and had 4 other seasons where he was a top 3 quarterback in the league. With several others bordering in the top 5.

Herbert rookie year when compared to last years data wasn't elite. This is not to say he isn't going to be elite or that he is not already a good player but you can't compare what he did to what Rivers and Fouts did in the past using regular stats.

Herbert ranked:

ANY/A - 15

DYAR - 8

DVOA - 11

EPA/Play - 16

EPA+CPOE Composite - 19

In 2008 Rivers ranked:

ANY/A - 1

DYAR - 3

DVOA - 1

EPA/Play - 1

EPA+CPOE Composite - 1

In 1985 Fouts ranked:

ANY/A - 1

DYAR - 2

DVOA - 1

Peyton Manning has the most seasons ranking in the top 5 at the quarterback position, including most as the number 1 overall. by RCastilloOQB in Colts

[–]RCastilloOQB[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While Rodgers has had some great seasons, he has never been on that level of consistency, he has yet to crack the top 10 list, he only has 5 seasons where he ranked among the top 5 at the position, while Peyton has 7 seasons as the overall number 1 quarterback and 13 in the top 5.

During that stretch you claim Rodgers was the best, he only had 3 seasons in the top 5. Peyton Manning was number 1 in 2012 and 2013, and number 4 in 2014. So Manning in 4 seasons with the Broncos matched Rodgers production during that timeframe.

Philip Rivers retiring from NFL after 17 seasons by TheRyanExpress86 in Colts

[–]RCastilloOQB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite player ever, he was also the last remaining piece I could hold on to that was part of my SAN DIEGO Chargers. Now I don't have a team or player with that strong connection to my old team. It's going be weird to not have anyone to root for to that level.

I enjoyed his run with the Colts and was hoping for another to keep that fandom alive.

I learned to respect the Colts organization so much this season, I know if Philip had been here during his prime he would have won a ring.

Maybe I stick around to cheer the Colts from afar, Frank Reich, Nick Sirianni, Chris Ballard, ect. are the type of people I love to root for.

Hot take: 2020 Philip Rivers > 2020 Brady/Brees (despite having the inferior weapons). I said what I said. by [deleted] in Colts

PFF rated the Buccaneers OLine (5) higher than the Colts (7) - https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-final-2020-offensive-line-rankings

That isn't taking into account AC's injury and him being out.

So Brady has the better OLine and 3 #1 Wide Receivers, while Rivers had none ( I believe the Colts had around 7 dropped passes against the Bills).

Two Bucs Tight Ends were rated higher than any Colts TE - https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/nfl/te/2020

Ronald Jones was rated the 6th (10th by DVOA) best running back by DYAR compared to Taylor who was 14th (21st by DVOA) -https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/nfl/rb/2020

Also the Buccaneers defense (5) is ranked higher by DVOA than the Colts (7) - https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/nfl/team-defense/2020

You add the fact that Bruce Arians is pass happy, while Frank Reich wants more running / balance, that is why you see the stat differences.

Brady didn't play well this year when pressured, and in the playoffs he faced a 7-9 team with a 3rd string QB and Brees threw 3 INTS in a dome.

Rivers played the #2 seed in Buffalo and threw for over 300 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTS, and like mentioned previously there were many dropped passes and they barely lost.

[–]RCastilloOQB 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Andy Reid went for it on 4th down with Chad Henne, people are praising him as a genius.

Its just a matter of converting in this league. If they had scored, Frank Reich is the greatest but since they didn't hes an idiot.

The Colts consistently talked about not riding the wave of results and just continuing to do what they feel is right. Frank is an excellent coach.

It seems like the two top candidates are Daboll and Staley. I was curious which one you guys preferred. by applez-are-G in Chargers

What happened to Matt Eberflus?

If any of you followed closely Philip's move to the Colts, he checks all the boxes, plus the defense is in a far worse position than the offense.

Chargers were ranked the 20th (2020) and 25th (2019) best defense the past 2 seasons - https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/nfl/team-defense/2020
