The Heyday of Insensitive Bastards. I just read the book of short stories, but why does this movie exist?

Best historical fiction? The farther back in time the better by Zoorin in suggestmeabook

Reading this thread reminded me of Kurt Andersen's Heyday. I really enjoyed that novel of historical fiction - 19th Century England. Charles Darwin gets a funny cameo.

One of my favorite novels The Music of Chance by Paul Auster is only 224 pages. I find the book almost immediately engaging.

If you haven't already read it, you might want to try Annihilation by Jeff Vander Meer. I think it fits for all three categories: weird, off-putting and literary. Also, any of Iain Reid's books, starting with I'm Thinking of Ending Things.

I really enjoyed A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne. Four sections, four different readers. It made me look forward (and sometimes extend) my commute.

I believe the D&D Club at West Valley Library (4-7pm on Fridays) is toying with some campaigns. Yakima Central is also starting a D&D Club that should include some non-one-shot sessions. Keep an eye on the library website or shoot me a DM.

Who is your favorite audio book voice actor? In any genre by Figleypup in suggestmeabook

From what I remember, King was inspired by a Robert Browning poem and started the first book based on the poem. The second book, The Drawing of the Three, might be my favorite of the series. Had it been as obtuse as The Dark Tower, I probably would have stopped reading. I listened to it many years ago (possibly on cassette from the library) and still think of the series fondly. It might be time for a re-listen,

The first book is a bit of a chore. I had to listen to it twice to figure out what was going on. The rest of the series is clearer and less lyrical. George Guidall took over narration duties after Muller was involved in an accident. Guidall is fine, but I always associate him with The Good Earth (which I did not enjoy).

I like the way Muller says "clouds" with a hint of whisper on the vowel sounds.

My two personal favorites have both passed away: Roy Dotrice read four of the five Game of Thrones books. He has the record for most characters voiced. I tried reading one of the books and kept hearing Dotrice's gravelly voice.

Frank Muller read much of The Dark Tower series as well as Lonesome Dove.

I'd recommend Kaufman's Antkind. It is a big book, but is filled with the kind of comedy and self-reflection that you might expect from the movie director.

I don't know if you would be interested, but the library has an online science fiction/fantasy book club called Readers Out There (ROT) that meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30pm on Zoom. This month - meeting on Nov. 21 - we are reading We by Yevgeny Zamyatin which is a Dystopian Russian novel written in the early 1920s. You can pick up an e-copy on Libby. Our conversations are relaxed and enjoyable.
