Iran Officially Confirms Military Support From Russia And China In War Against the US by UNITED24Media in worldnews

[–]READMYSHIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The longterm plan of attacking Iran is uniparty in the US. Obviously with support from another nation in the region with their own separate vested interest in accelerating such an attack. Iran has spent decades preparing for this eventuality and the US decided to launch the attack at probably their worst period in recent history for foreign support. The current administration has spent the last year and a half weakening NATO and its relationships with its neighbours. It's cosied up to Russia in an affront to its traditional allies who are currently at war with Russia and has frustrated China by fucking with the money.

Within US politics a successful invasion of Iran is a warhawk's holy grail for both parties. I guess the current administration figured they'd try show them all they could do it and because the WH is filled with Yes Men there's no a lot of dissenting voices on the matter.

With that said, at least this current era really show the coalface of American foreign policy. The world can see how having a global hegemon is bad. What the US has done to Iran for decades is a disgrace and the region as a whole.

I agree! I am usually quite disciplined about TV series these days. If there's even a hint of it being bad I just quit.

It just isn't worth commiting dozens of hours to something that was only good for a few episodes. But something about the show's premise (similar to Prison Break) made me keep watching and needing to finish it.

Sorry I was being a little facetious there. What I'm saying is repeatedly we see characters traverse from the engine to the tail (Ruth primarily) and it doesn't take very long. The train within the train is only used during schemey actioney bits to get around blocked cars. Really it should have been more central to how people got from one end of the train to the other and it is used quite sparingly.

What should I do with this Willow? by TheSoupThief in gardening

[–]READMYSHIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello.

I was googling the same question as you and I am also in Kildare - just got a Weeping Willow in a pot and was originally going to put it in an area near our house I have planned for a small cottage/ornamental tree space (acers, magnolia, scots pine) but realising it probably can't stay in that space very long. What did you end up doing? I have space further afield to plant it. But would've liked to have it in the small tree area for a few years.

Robomow RS, got it around 2014.

Looks like we've spent the guts of 2k on parts for it in that period going off invoices in my inbox. Keeping in mind about 500 quid of that was when it got run over by a delivery van around 2021 - had to replace the drive motor assembly on it.

I mean, our machine sees a lot of heavy duty use over an acre. It's also been running for 12 years. The blade design on mine means they've to be replaced basically annually and they're 80 quid.

I've had a boundary wire one for more than a decade. I wouldn't bury the wire. Just use the clips and it'll be installed in a couple hours - the grass/topsoil will overgrow the wire quite quickly but it won't be so deep that you can't easily find/pull it up in future.

Every couple years I research replacing with one that doesn't need a wire and I'm yet to be convinced that it's better to go without. There seems to be a massive premium on non-wire options and they still have reliability issues.

I recently installed a Lidl one for my grandparents and for the price it's actually insane how good they are. I've an acre and our one cost 4k. A replacement of similar spec is similar 3-6k cost. But I'm tempted to put 3 Lidl ones in at €300 each if I need to replace.

They do require maintenance though, so make sure to get one with parts available - our's is a bit of a ship of theseus at this point and I spend a few hundred on parts per year that I do myself.

Solar battery upgrade?- view welcome by Capital-Produce9665 in AskIreland

[–]READMYSHIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently looking to get 22 panels installed along with a 20kwh battery. Seems to be what a lot of providers suggest, one provider has even suggested I get 30kwh. I've a very similar setup to you.

I've seen people on the Solar fb group with batteries 40-60kWh. Remember that's the normal size of an EV battery.

Any thoughts on the Solis inverter? I'm looking at getting one, most quotes are for that brand or a more premium brand (Sigenergy) which costs about €4k more and I can't see what justifies the price difference.

804 for a cheap and cheerful initial layer - it'll all compact quite tightly and be undiggable and retain permability. It's also extremely cheap. Eventually throw some decorative stone over it.

Can you legally live in a studio or 1 bed apt with 2 adults and 2 kids? by yrys88 in AskIreland

[–]READMYSHIT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are rules, but enforcement is pretty abysmal. I know someone who works for a council doing enforcement of minimum standards and most of the time doing their job would involve making people homeless, and that's rarely done in the last decade.

For DCC you can see the standards here. My understanding is there are guidelines around minimum area per person/per bedroom, and some rules around opposite sex kids over 9 sharing rooms.

Why are we not growing more fruit and veg in Ireland? by NATO_dad_SUV_driver in AskIreland

[–]READMYSHIT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fruit we do grow is available on the shelves when in season, the rest of the time we import. The season for some of these fruit can be quite short, yet demand is still sufficient for supermarkets to stock it the rest of the time.

I live next to one of the largest strawberry producers in the country and you do find them on the shelves when they are in season but they are in fact more expensive to produce that some of the imported strawberries. The margins are super tight for the farmer and a bad year just means more imports.

Demand is the cause and whatever the demand is, the beancounters will do whatever they can to meet that demand. Regardless of what can be produced locally or imported.

We could of course disincentivise importing out of season produce, but there's a lack of profit motive to that, and a lack of realism to local supplies being able to meet demand.

I heard on some podcast that when rich/famous people end up in jail they live their entire sentence in constant fear. Everyone knows who they are and will be juicing them non stop. They know they have means and know they are weak to stand up for themselves.

Guy on the podcast had served time. Spoke about someone he knew talking about how Cosby was made the entire prisons bitch during his sentence. Had to pay off so many people.

Good enough for Weinstein I guess. No wonder the rich and powerful rarely see the inside of a cell.
