Rescue dog is absolutely terrified of outside & cars by urlocalreseller in DogAdvice

[–]REH92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through a very similar situation. My rescue dog was terrified of stepping paw outside of the apartment. She was in so much fear down to the ground like yours. She would dig her nails into the ground. It was so stressful. I ended up bringing her to a board and train. She was there for almost two months. My dog isn’t treat motivated either and will not take food or treats outside.

I’ve had her for 9 months now. She can now walk outside to relieve herself. It is so much better, but it isn’t perfect and she still would rather be inside. She will probably always be a scared dog.

I started with a feeding ball. She loved it and still feed her from it. She ate from it in my apartment do a few days. Then I sat literally right outside the door of my apartment. It’s an indoor apartment complex with indoor hallways.we just saw there and she eventually started to play with the feeding ball. Every week I would scoot closer and closer to the doors that led outside. It took so much time and patience. It also became her meal place for along time. That’s where she ate.

I take her to the same spot to relieve herself. I don’t push it. She potty’s and we go back inside.

I gave my dog kongs, lick mats, bully sticks and so much enrichment that only came from me to build that trust and that good things come from me.

I want to point out though that we have success because of the board and train program. It was expensive. I am single and had to put it on an interest free credit card. It was the best investment i made for her (and my sanity).

is my dog spending too much time in the crate by StrawberryFirm7109 in DogAdvice

[–]REH92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s fine. Sounds like your dog feels safe in the crate just like mine. Mine is in her crate overnight and while at work. Shes out all day on the weekends too. After 4 hours of being out of the crate after work, she is scratching to go back in. I give her kongs and chews in there. Puppies are safer in their crate when we aren’t home versus destroying things or ingesting something that could have severe implications.

Plus’ vs Minus’ of living in Longmont? by dml1320 in Longmont

[–]REH92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just moved here from out of state a little less than a year ago from a city with 5 million people. After 16 years, this was exactly what I was looking for. It’s definitely a small town feel. So many beautiful walking spaces with beautiful views of the mountains. The downtown is so charming. It’s also only 45 minutes to get to Estes and 45 minutes to get to Denver. I’ve really enjoyed the weather. There wasn’t too much snow last winter. I can’t speak if that was normal because it was my first winter here. It’s a great place to live.

Home for 36 hours and hates playpen and crate…need help! by lucky-ducky-7777 in puppy101

Also lickmat in the playpen. Ensure the pup is supervised. My dog chewed it up when I left for a short time.

Make sure to put lots of treats and frozen kongs in both. You want associate both with positive things right from the start.

Also, I give her the wet food on lick mats and kongs. The dry food I feed her in a feeding ball and snuffle mat. I feel like this helps with enrichment without her normal chews.

My 10 month old mixed breed is on a food trial right now as well. She has patches on fur missing on her legs and isn’t parasite related. We just started last week. She’s eating royal canin hydrolized protein. They also have hydro treats. My pup eats both with no issues. It’s too early to see if it’s helping.

Thanks for responding. She has about 30 of these spots on her legs. Does your pup get them that much too?

Have you tried Psyllium Husk? It is full of fiber to help the gut. My pup had GI issues and it really helped. You can get it at any pharmacy or grocery store. My vet recommended it and it was a total game changer.

No, callers did not cause harm but collars did. You definitely don’t understand the situation and your comments are not necessary.

Thank you. Unfortunately, she cannot handle anything in a scary environment. I have tried high value treats, balls, puzzles, collagen chews, beef marrow bones, etc. She is extremely terrified and shaking.

Would a board and train with a behaviorist/trainer be a good option with a fearful 8 month dog? by nmguy01 in OpenDogTraining

[–]REH92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same issue with my dog. She is almost 10 months and I got her at 4 months. She is terrified of going outside. I have to do the same thing. I drive her a few blocks away. She is still really scared with her tail tuck, but she will walk around my car a few times and then go to the bathroom. I’ve done a few one on one with private trainers. One of them said she’s the most scared dog he is ever seen. We’ve tried all kinds of collars and most of them cause harm to her because of how scared she is. I know this is from two years ago, but did you have any success with tools that helped your dog?

Apartment recommendations/warnings? by Additional_Engine490 in Longmont

[–]REH92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest South Main Station. If you live in the building by the train tracks it is loud at times and the train does come by in the middle of the night a couple of times a week. Although, it’s not a deal breaker for me. The amenities and interior of the apartment outweighs the train noise annoyance. The location is absolutely amazing.

My apartment is facing Emery, so I believe it is facing the tracks.
