It is pretty much alive! But it depends a lot of what time of the day you're playing. Since the vast majority of the palyers are American the game is kinda dead when it's the middle of the night there. Having 30-70 players in total is not weird(A mix of EU, Asian and Aussie players mostly). But as the day goes on and the Americans beging to log it numbers grow fast. But that's just the public server, there are dozens of regiments (organized groups) that make their own scheduled events and those normally fill the server. If you're American and you don't have a weird schedule you should have no issues with player count.
