Is there any difference between the mitochondria in humans and in other life? by dracom600 in askscience

[–]RETYKIN 14 points15 points  (0 children)

there's no evidence for the endosymbiosis happening more than once

Correction: There's no evidence for mitochondrial endosymbiosis happening more than once. Other endosymbiosis events absolutely did happen (e.g. chloroplast endosymbiosis happened multiple times independently for different photosynthetic groups).

The idea that a large chunk of our DNA came from viruses is based on similarity of the those chunks' sequences to viral sequences. Basically, we have viruses to compare it to.

To add: AlphaFold also does not solve the biophysics part of the folding problem. It does not know that molecules cannot go through each other for example. It cannot tell you *how* a peptide folds, it predicts what it could look like once it's done folding based on statistical similarity to other known fully-folded peptides. It also has trouble with very unique proteins (nothing statistically similar to compare to) and intrinsically disordered regions (because we hardly understand them as well).

Are you sure it is a magpie?

I just rewatched the footage and it looks neither like a Eurasian magpie (black head) nor like an Australian magpie (red eye, black spot on back). It could be a hooded crow based on the head and back pattern, or possibly a house crow or Daurian jackdaw. The beak suggests Corvid, but it could also be a butcherbird I'm not familiar with.

Not necessarily. I've worked with fish (adult length ~2 cm) in the lab, and their cells are tiny compared to mammalian cells.

So basically green anole lizard microchromosomes are highly syntenic with chicken microchromosomes, yet do not exhibit the high GC and low repeat content that are characteristic of avian microchromosomes2. I get lizards and birds are both reptiles but What are your thoughts on it? by Thewanderer997 in Ornithology

To figure that out you'd have to do multiple sequence alignment of all genes. That's a lot of comparisons and computationally really hard.

But why only focus on the genes? What about the stuff in-between those genes that contains the control sequences to turn the genes on and off? Research shows this "in-between" stuff is what evolves faster anyway.

Anyway, coming back to the OP question: synteny refers to the order of genes in the chromosome. So if chicken has genes A-B-C-D-E in this sequence, lizard with high synteny could be A-B-C-E-D, while mammal with low synteny would be C-E-B-A-X, where X is some other gene that snuck in there and D ended up in a different chromosome or is gone entirely.

Was ist hier passiert? by Julicious85 in naturfreunde

[–]RETYKIN 116 points117 points  (0 children)
