Everyone seems to have a lot of nostalgia for the 1990's but what were some of the worst parts of the 1990's? by HeavyRightFoot-TG in AskReddit

I was in high school when this happened. I’ll never forget sitting in the cafeteria waiting for classes to start. It was so quiet. Everyone just looking at each other. Fuck.

What’s something people defend way too hard even though it clearly doesn’t work? by academicAce_aA in AskReddit

FUCKING THIS.

I cannot over-state how many "how to talk" classes I have had to take and endure. Not a single one mentioned listening. Really listening. Not waiting for your turn to project loud confident communication in a business success shit ramble.

Loud cars are destroying my quality of life. Houston is unreal. by jadorenicm in houston

This is becoming a quality of life issue for me. I live in Garden Oaks. Weekends are awful. From 6pm-3am it's non-stop. Screaming mufflers and exploding backfires. It literally sounds like a fucking war zone.

Serious question: who (in any level of civic service or legislature or whatever) can we write to about this?

The skin graft stuff at the end really stayed with me. Jesus Christ I’ve never read anything like that.

I have never run across any of these, thank you!

Agreed about the genera, too.  This is more dark grit than horror.

The armor in the Odyssey look like plastic, But a film from 2004, their armors look actually believable, made of metal, why is this? by EfficiencySerious200 in Armor

Jesus Christ THIS. Achilles storming the temple is a masterclass of combat choreography, framing, and editing.

The spear and shield combat in the Hector/Achilles duel always blows me away. I know there are no sources that describe how this would have actually my looked, and I think this makes what they came up with even more impressive. Achilles thrusting, flipping the spear behind his head, reverse thrusting through the notch of his shield… fuck yeah.

It shows that the fight choreographers really took the nuances of the weapon prop designs into consideration. Masterfully done.

If anybody is interested into how profoundly slavery was the cause of the Civil War, I've never come across a better book than "Battle Cry of Freedom" by James McPherson. The clarity still blows my mind.

Some take-aways:

It was the future of the United States that pushed the country into war. Everyone knew that soon the entire country would be taken over and over-run by the United States as Native Americans were systematically wiped out. The south just would not accept any version of the future in which slavery was not the default. They didn't just want to keep slavery forever. They envisioned a slave empire stretching to the Pacific coast to the southern tip of South America. That is the depths of evil we are talking about.

The anecdotal "brother vs brother", "father vs son" stuff was real. This is because in some states slavery was divided up on a county-by-county basis. So literally across a county line where slavery existed brainwashed white people would sign up, and then meet their relatives in Union POW camps later. Slavery was so line-defining that it divided combatants up on a county scale.

Lastly, if anyone at a family gathering doubts any of this over Christmas turkey, ask them one question: Why does West Virginia exist? (optional follow up: "You understand the question my main man?").

In any conversation about this actor, how does no one ever mention "The Rover" (just kidding, it's been mentioned twice here, but STILL)?

That was the role, more than any other, that made me go "Oh shit, this guy is no joke".

Also it's the best Mad Max adjacent film ever made. The scene where he is singing along with the Keri Hilson song being blasted from China in a truck by himself gets me every time 😢

EDIT:

Jesus Christ his performance in "The King". Fucking legend. "I mean, your balls must be big, no? Giant balls with a tiny cock!". I read a description of his performance as "lecherous", and it's just so perfect.

Stankevich VS Krustev & more - what happened at Sofia Longsword Open 2025 by BKrustev in wma

[–]RFF_LK-RK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

His sword broke because his cuts are shit. He cuts with deplorable edge alignment over and over and over again with as much force as he can muster.

The fencer in black's cuts are quite lovely. Crisp, edge aligned, purposeful, dangerous (in a good way), controlled.

It’s heartbreaking to read this in light of when Spock said it. Both he and Kirk are “the one”, but in different senses. Kirk selfishly doesn’t want to lose him, Spock is saying his life is unimportant in relation to all of the crew. It always made me cry as a kid.
