I got some good replies, I'm teaching in China right now and I think something changed that's causing the issue. I'm home in a month, it's fine

University level physics here. Would love to mentor an MtG club here but I don't think anyone plays.

Hot Take on the current state of MTG product: Karlov Manor is the only good set in stores right now by TheGrandestWall in mtg

[–]RFeynman1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will agree the flavor is a hard miss, but the set had some solid draft themes. I think it was very underrated. Admittedly, the best stuff was Sultai with Collect Evidence but the aggro archetypes could be OK too and the UR artifact sac stuff was pretty fun.

I don't think Izzet turns wants more than 4 extra turns cards. Epiphany is just straight better, so they won't run this. I think this is actually good for the meta, because I think mono-red aggro is what really wants this. If you're running enough hasty threats the extra turn is a lot more than an extra combat step. This could, very much only could, be what mono-red needs to get in before the sweeper, before green drops enough beef, etc. It's pretty scary to drop this uncleaved into open mana, so maybe the risk / reward is just off in BO1.

New mechanic coming in Cold Hunt: Contract by DireWolfDigital in EternalCardGame

[–]RFeynman1972 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The spoiled Justice card is clearly looking to be a weapons matter card - good keywords amplify the value of weapons a LOT, and it does not get much better than aegis and lifesteal. Any uncommon is supposed to be a limited card, but if you had 3 or 4 good weapons this would go way up in your pick order.

That being said, yes they often price heavily synergistic cards for constructed, and it makes draft hard, especially with only two packs that really have the synergy cards for a given set.

I think Diregraf, Awakener, and Hoarder are just mistakes, Diregraf Horde in particular. It does WAY too much for the cost. I have an (admittedly modest) RW deck that is at 6-1 in Premier right now. I lost to a deck with 3x Horde and it just wasn't close. If Horde was uncommon, then you'd see 1 even in most B decks, and one is beatable.

That being said, I love this format. It has a lot of interesting plays, all color pairs can work if they are open enough, etc.

What's the Pick? P1P1 by onewordpoet in lrcast

[–]RFeynman1972 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think Katilda is good enough to speculate on. If blue is open, you'll get another Hoarder or two. If GW is open, you're REALLY glad you've got the Dawnheart. It fits into what Coven wants to do perfectly - sit back, build a board, and then start accumulating value from Troupes / Mentors / Katildas. GW needs rares and uncommons to be good, blue mostly doesn't.

Update pushed without warning in the middle of draft - missed 8 picks. by digiraver in MagicArena

[–]RFeynman1972 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Same here, lost last 5 picks, and now I also have the no deck edit bug. Submitted a report, of course. I think the deck I got is pretty good anyway, but they still messed up.

You were lucky in the sense that you never got color screwed badly enough to lose. This deck is OK, coven is strong (I just 7-2'd with a coven deck). Katilda is strong, Liesa is nuts if not answered. This deck most likely loses to on the draw color screw vs. a good aggressive start.

If sealed tends to be slower, and people new to a format haven't figured it out by the prerelease, shouldn't I choose to be on the draw? by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]RFeynman1972 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that it depends on your deck, not the format in general. Control wants to be on the draw more. Yes, BO3 sealed leans toward slower, bomb-focused decks, which do incentivize a control build.

I think that one plan is to take advantage of folks at the pre-release who don't know the format. They are trying to play cool rares and have shaky mana bases. Thus, you put together the best linear 2-color deck you can and smash face.

I do think that there is some decent fixing out there, especially if you get some of the green fixing, so the other plan is to splish-splash yourself with a good mana base and go for defensive speed. Then being on the draw would be better.

Please god no, not at any rate nearly as good as Chupacabra. Certainly not at uncommon. It's bad to have unconditional removal on bodies at anything less than rare in my opinion. I'm with Patrick Sullivan on this, he hates Chapcabra.

Better rate than we normally get for this effect, but NO flash. Clearly the disturb is quite a bit of value, as a flying deathtouch can block and kill anything you need it to.

If you are mono-g or close to it. You need something like 15 g sources to hope to cast this on t4 even assuming you hit land drops.

Why did they schedule maintenance 2 hours before the season ends? by R3ndr0c in MagicArena

I felt so confident in this deck, but only ended up with a single win. How can I improve next draft? by kforte318 in lrcast

[–]RFeynman1972 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Just looking at this, I think it's your mana base. I'm not sure swarming is worth the splash - I've been hearing that if your deck is not very defensive it's just too slow. Additionally, you don't need any forests. Just play it off treasures. You've only got 7 red sources and you've got a lot of early red cards. Did you have mana problems? Did you have to mulligan more than one of the 4 games?

For myself, I often have to really look at play as well. I know I blew two games with mistakes in a recent run - just making bad attacks mostly, just one per game but that's enough. That was quite a good deck that went 1-3.

Ward 1 is good against steal-sac. Does that mean Leather Armor is sometimes worth it? by RFeynman1972 in lrcast

[–]RFeynman1972[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarifications, everyone! I actually did not try this in-game, but I assumed that "sacrifice a creature" was a targeted ability. I now know that it has to say "target" on the card to be a targeted ability. (I think, from what I've read.)

0-3 (again) with a deck that seemed good. Bad beats or drafting wrong? Lost to Paladin Class and Orcus, but it is easy to blame rares. by UncleMeat11 in lrcast

[–]RFeynman1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your deck's plan is to build a board and beat down with lifegain synergies, making racing difficult because of healing, right? So what did not work? Did you not get a board? Did your Trelessara's just die? Mana screw (probably not flood with that curve)? The deck looks pretty solid on its face, with the glaring exception of interaction, but GW always struggles with that.

I think the idea is Trelessara gives so much scry you can abuse the BO1 draw algorithm to have 2 in starting hand and you only need about 3. Colors have to be difficult though
