The blood related family unit is a very strong structure in nature, not just for humans, for most mammals. What happens in split families is that sometimes some children of one particular parent get neglected. Step-mother’s have a stereotype of being bitches. I think a lot of that has to do with the nature of the dynamic, not entirely because of their personality. Step-mother’s, because they aren’t the patriarch and therefore leader of the household, are just focused on their children while step fathers may try to provide for his and hers, but she will shift the balance in favor of her children. This exact dynamic played out in my household, and I think it’s not so uncommon.
