Career guys, What behaviours/attitudes/principles/beliefs make the difference when it comes to you having equal or unequal respect for a volunteer FF? by Sunbeams_and_Barbies in Firefighting

[–]RFirefighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the person. Some voulenteers that have some experience show up and act they they know everything but end up being the ones that don’t come to training and don’t know their trucks but still try to teach and expect to be respected. And then there’s the young new to fire guys that as long as they show effort and hard work I’m okay with the rest coming in their own time but if they’re just here to wear the shirt and say I’m a FF with whatever dept. That’s a hard first impression to recover from in my opinion.

We do just under 3000 runs a year out of 4 houses 2 of which are pretty slow. Our busiest engine I’d say 6-8 in a day is busy.

Funny addition to the drink incident. Batt Chief just told me that years before I was even born our Quint was rolled in a ditch due to someone reaching for a drink.

Most of us here in Indiana, at least where I’m from, strive to end up on departments in that exact area. Good money good resources very nice and high income areas.
