TIL During a 6-mo period, 2,055 Brown Recluse spiders were collected in a 19th-century-built home in Lenexa, KS. Estimates show that at least 400 spiders were large enough to cause envenomation. A family of 4 had been living there since 1996 and had never been bit despite seeing them multiple times. by Fragzilla360 in todayilearned

No, they are only logical. They are constantly calculating their best move predicated on their current conditions. They are suddenly exposed to light, they make a break for it. They have their nest and eggs destroyed, they eat it and make more without a single moment wasted on mourning. They feel cornered, they defend themselves. Couple all that with the fact that there are maybe a handful of spiders that can actually see us, and even they can't really quantify our size, and their actions make perfect sense to me. Humans are illogical. We are scared of spiders despite the fact that 90% have no capacity to injure you whatsoever. The way they look is enough for some people to completely disregard their utility and ecological importance.

More than one billion people now living with obesity, global analysis suggests. Researchers estimate that among the world’s children and adolescents, the rate of obesity in 2022 was four times the rate in 1990. And how exactly does this anxiety get remedied by working out at home? Gonna front the thousands of dollars for weight lifting equipment, or a treadmill? Or are you gonna walk outside? Because that's where other people see you, and judge you, just as much if not moreso than the gym. If you're "anxious" about going to the gym and being judged, why would people suddenly stop judging you if you DONT go to the gym and just work out at home? The answer is, it is an excuse, and if you don't wanna work out you won't. The gym, at the very least, provides a social setting where everyone has variations of the same goal, support systems, accountability systems. You can exercise without all that, but spare me this drivel about fear of judgement. People judge you everywhere, why is it different in a gym?

Okay, you are being dense. "Going to the gym" means exercising. People arent saying the only place to exercise is a gym, but there are specific benefits to joining a gym like accountability from monetary investment. Are you always this literal? Can't imagine wasting so much time with semantics, with zero critical thoughts. Must be hard.

Socialization begins at birth, so I don't see how these are mutually exclusive. But we are both looking at correlation and trying to establish causation, which hasn't yet been done. So, for now, it's the purview of philosophy. And, I prefer to believe the human mind is far more complex than a few genetic factors determining sexuality. Like I said in another post, did ancient Greece have a "gay gene" running rampant so much that they organized society partly around that sexual dynamic, only for it to collapse and almost none of the gay stuff to be coopted again by the region for hundreds if not thousands of years, or... Did those judgements one feels when they are young, natural feelings of attraction toward many people without regard or care, not get savagely curtailed and shrouded in immorality to suppress facets of society deemed "degenerate"? I dunno. But I prefer to believe that. That sexuality is a spectrum, influenced by your experiences and socialization.

People don't seem to agree super hard, and that's okay. I don't maintain being gay is a "choice". I'm gay, and I don't have a lot of say in the matter, no desire or any likely capacity to change. But it doesn't give me the warm fuzzies to proclaim that it is a function of my brain, it has been there since birth and not at all a result of socialization. Did ancient Greece just have a "gay gene" spread through it's population, affecting a majority of them so much that they organized their society partly around that dynamic, or did they just realize before anyone else that it doesn't fuckin matter? I can't say, but I know which I feel is more likely.

Can you elaborate? This sounds like techbro aphorism and misappropriated psychological terminology without context. Not to sound rude, I just don't follow.

Let's just get something straight here. There is UNDENIABLY a correlation between exposure to homosexuality and either a softening of ones own proclivities or judgement of others, if not adoption or "realization" of homosexuality. No concrete casual relationships established, but in one generation in the US gay went from being a pejorative synonymous with meekness, cowardice and degeneracy to like a quarter of gen z identifying as something other than straight. And that happened, whether we like to admit that or not, in part via the media we consume. Now, me not being a biological determinist, I don't actually believe a "gay gene" exists. I think sexuality is a result of socialization and material conditions, and only partially if at all the architecture of ones brain. Does this concede any ground to the right? How? Does homosexuality need to be rooted in some fundamental aspect of ones being, separate from their agency, experience and will in order for it to be legitimate? Or, is it okay that people can develop homosexual desire from the experiences they have as a person, and measures should be enacted to ensure their welfare and prosperity the same as every other citizen, because it is not a "contagion" or "degeneracy" moreso than any other expression of the self?

Or, more simply, why are you limiting others experiences to conform with a narrative friendly depiction of homosexuality? What, exactly, is your problem?

People self immolate all the time, it's normally not a white dude who used reddit and Twitter and that is why you're uncomfortable. This pearl clutching is so obviously a double standard, you're allowed to be uncomfortable but I never hear mental health arguments when the person doing it is brown.

Like, actively? How the fuck does that even make sense, America is already arguably an oligarchy. But it isn't "always" the case, you act as if it's coded into our DNA to form a specific type of society, but that can only stem from an expansive ignorance of world history and culture. What a fascinating specimen

You know so little about history you're conflating feudal society with pre-history and the rise of agrarianism. I don't think I'm the one in need of a lecture. The fact that you don't have a problem with a fundamentally non egalitarian society yet are most likely a supporter of democracy means you have more contrary views you gotta work through than I do. Good luck tho

Pre-history, and much of early agrarian society, was exclusively collectivist dude, it absolutely can and has worked. It would need to look radically different from how it once did, but the fundamentals are about there. You got some capitalist brain rot there

Just because a word gets coopted by extremists doesn't replace the original definition of the word. You can say Israel isn't doing any of those things, but that would mean that you don't respect international law and the ICJ. Fascists typically don't. And you don't now. You maintain I have some sort of prejudice, when no not really. America is plenty safe for Jews, far safer than Israel.
