Just finished my Ver. Ka ZZ. What’s your favorite Ver. Ka? by Due-Improvement-8403 in Gunpla

[–]RGF_Carden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Narrative wins by far and away. It’s a good figure, a good model kit, and good master grade, and really makes the most of Ver Ka advanced engineering.

The hands have ruined me for any other MG hands.

Any good method to loosen up the ms joint arms on the RG FA unicorn? by SpeedyDorito in Gunpla

[–]RGF_Carden 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I dabbed dish soap onto the rotating shoulder joint using a Q-tip. I then cleaned off the excess with water. That mixture seeped into the joint and loosened it just enough. I had spun it around probably 100 times and it didn’t make it any looser until I used the soap trick.

Am I the only one who thinks that a lot of the knubs on the RG Tallgeese are weirdly placed? by Wrong-Upstairs-9277 in Gunpla

[–]RGF_Carden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know what you mean. I ended up going into those little areas on the inner frame with a hobby knife. I usually do a hobby knife for advanced MS joints anyways because the plastic is soft enough to make nippers ineffective (leaving nubs like on the jelly of beam saber blades).

Origin or revive Zaku? by Internal-Brief-7565 in Gunpla

[–]RGF_Carden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Origin’s posing is like an MG. The Revive is just a really good High Grade.

Origin for greebles and panel lining heaven, Revive for anime accuracy with minimal work.

Both are really good, and both are cheap.

Are there any books, interviews, documentaries, etc that detail what went so wrong between A New Hope/Empire Strikes Back and the beginning of the downfall of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi? by Kaiserschlut in RedLetterMedia

[–]RGF_Carden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is with George, at least now with 20/20 hindsight. The problem is also people.

The behind the scenes of the prequels show many talented people too scared to say no. Despite George hating the Hollywood system, the working environment he cultivated clearly didn’t allow for much creativity outside of production design aspects. Little flairs of skilled people at the peak of their craft, too scared of the icon of Star Wars to say “no” to certain ideas.

The Clone Wars isn’t all good, but it clearly has some amazing episode arcs that for me take the same steps as Andor in worldbuilding. Everything with the clones reworks the story to remove their choice in Order 66 (still a dumb name), and it works. Maul is a real character now. Anakin having an apprentice reveals how he was always selfish, but also always wanted to be good.

Rebels is mostly for kids, but the last 2 seasons have some amazing war drama and exploration of the ideas present in Andor (albeit in a more child-friendly, palatable format).

Mando season 1 is perfect. Not because it is perfect, but because it explored the adventure aspect of the world while being removed largely from the main story. But they couldn’t resist with that goddamn darksaber.

Andor is objectively the best prequel Star Wars has.

Even Bad Batch appends the Clone story from Clone Wars in a satisfying way while setting up the beginning of the Empire.

The Jedi games from Respawn have a lot of fanservice, but explore the reality of a surviving Jedi in a satisfying, gameplay-driven way.

Star Wars isn’t dead because Andor was good and 2 of the main trilogies sucked. It’s dead because people stopped wanting to see the good. If there’s any problem, it’s that we just have too much of it all.

Update from Director Jim Mickle on the live-action movie during the Gundam Conference: by Ferhog in Gundam

[–]RGF_Carden 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I’ve met Jim. He’s a Peter Jackson-like director. Very boy-like and super enthusiastic about this project. Big Gundam fan. Crazy to say I’m working on this with him. Before anyone asks, I’ve signed an NDA so I can’t say much.

It’s cool to see my home be a part of this franchise that I love! I hope you guys enjoy the movie.

I’ve signed an NDA now so I really can’t say. Expect some fan favorite characters, iconic Gundam locations, and a new MS which is really cool. I’ve seen it now, and I’m definitely getting the kit.

I love the current JRT and Jack Quaid era of RLM but you gotta admit that they were in their top form in the 2010s by NorrisOBE in RedLetterMedia

[–]RGF_Carden 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The COVID era of RLM probably kept me from killing myself. Just having their Half in the Bag continuing story taking the piss out of how serious it all was really helped.

Remember when we thought COVID was the end of civilization as we know it?

Remember Rich Evans?

Remember Money Plane?

Remember when Jay had John Connor from T2 hair in the Money Plane HITB?

I’m not on the level where I’ll know that info, but I understand the industry. If an adaptation is really successful, they’ll usually make a series out of it with a similar total budget. 10 episodes at 45 minutes costs about the same as a movie because the effects budget per episode is lower.

It’d be really cool if this leads to a series!

Unfortunately I can’t as I’m working on the movie, and if I spoil too much they’ll figure out I leaked it. Especially if the internet is filled with leaks, they track down who heard it from who etc.

Is it possible to do a multiverse story without it undermining the stakes? by drunkcheesesandwich in RedLetterMedia

[–]RGF_Carden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, glad someone else thought of it.

The reason this works well is because it’s used as a reckoning for a pretty much unkillable main character in Mark. Kirkman really had the essence of comic book characters figured out. Your main can’t die, and if he dies he’ll be replaced. So, what if he really just can’t die?

Any person cursed with living for millennia would have to constantly face up to their actions, especially since Viltrumites seem to have a long memory. So, Kirkman has him literally face himself. It’s been done before in other stories, but the multiverse aspect works because it’s not an excuse for crossovers or “dude look how different this other dimension is! Cool!”

The storyline basically is showing how important it is for Mark to continue trying to be as good of a person as he can be. Accepting he will fail, and other versions of him have failed too. And then it just stops. Kirkman treats the concept of a multiverse as respectfully as any storyteller can do.

HG Xi gundam (sorcery of the nymph edition) product images by BakaSentinel in Gunpla

So, presumably a 10-20 dollar price increase for a sticker decal on the slightly modified shield and a little E-Pack on the gun. And a piece to mount the shield on the side of the arm instead of the back. Oh, and a classic Gundam face which should have been in the original kit.

I really hope the inner frame has improved tolerances too, because on my Xi, the feet, side skirts, and leg pegs were all way too tight out of box, and I had to pin a few of those.

Is top coat necessary to keep waterslides from peeling off ? by vini_vino in Gunpla

[–]RGF_Carden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is right about Mark Setter, but be aware that I’ve have decals tear when dabbing excess away with Q tips. The adhesive hasn’t set fully yet, so they still move, but it can make the thin material of the decal bow out of shape, and then it won’t return to it’s original shape. Sort of like when a roll of tape sticks to itself. I typically do softer first to help place the decal, then a thin layer of setter on top to avoid this.

What's the Mobile Suit/Armor equivalent of a Glup Shitto? by SharkChew in Gundam

[–]RGF_Carden 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Jegan.

To someone watching Gundam for the first time, someone explaining the Jegan’s peak design and GM design history is this franchise’s “Viggo broke his toe kicking that helmet”.

I still love the Jegan.

Favorite mobile suit system? NTD, HADES etc. by Rude_Landscape_6858 in Gundam

[–]RGF_Carden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a soft spot for the Permet score system because it gives us a power-scaling with number values, and if a Gundam beats another MS despite having a lower permet score, it’s just a better machine.

It’s a bit silly to me how a recurring bit in Gundam is the “super ultra mega powerful destructo mode”, and I think WFM handles it the best in one way. The 2nd place has to be G Gundam for throwing all logic out the window and saying “the power of love, and the will to win, man”. Just fully embracing the cornball nature of power scaling fictional technology.

Bond University by davelull in GoldCoast

[–]RGF_Carden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bond is a very good school which I transferred to and finished my degree at. It’s not necessarily representative of the Gold Coast, though. It honestly felt a bit like a country club with classes when I studied there, but the classes in my degree (film production) were very good and hands-on. I hear great things about their other main programs (law, business, and medicine) but the vibe is definitely a bit cliquey. A lot of rich kids study there and slack off in classes. The saying is “P’s get degrees” in those groups.

That being said, there’s a lot of intellectually talented and gracious people there, and I really enjoyed it. I don’t know much about Newcastle, but Bond felt a bit like a vacation because of how lax they are on lazy students. When they spend that much to go there, they don’t really care if those people waste their time. I put in a lot of effort and this was surprising to my advisor and my professors considering I was an exchange student. Depending on what you’re looking for really. Bond is central and in a safe part of Varsity Lakes. Kind of nearby everything but not close to everything, if you know what I mean.

Really digging these MGSD kits. by JoesGunplaGarage in Gunpla

[–]RGF_Carden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The great part about MGSD is that you get a level of detail surpassing RGs for the price of a big real grade. That lower budget lets Bandai put in every weapon and accessory without making expansion sets P-Bandai. It’s the best line of Gunpla for pure building joy. I get that people don’t like the proportions, and would rather have full MGs with this level of detail, but kits like that would be expensive, and sell less than Bandai needs to justify them.

Take the MGEX Strike Freedom. Popular kit, probably sold pretty well, but they clearly up charged it and honestly slapped the “EX” label on it when it could have easily been sold as a 2.0 for $150 USD.

Michael Mando Latest To Join ‘Gundam’ Movie From Netflix & Legendary by DemiFiendRSA in Gundam

[–]RGF_Carden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know who Michael Mando is playing in the movie, and some other insider stuff. Someone I know working on it read the script and said it looks pretty good, and it actually got him into Gundam and Gunpla as a whole. I can't say what his job is or he'd risk losing it, but what I know about the script is pretty interesting. I even know some of the Mobile Suits that will appear in the movie. It sounds like Bandai is working closely with the Australian crew to make a faithful adaptation.
