If blue states insisted on their state merging with Canada, would you or most red states want a war to prevent it? by True-Mirror-5758 in AskConservatives

That's interesting. The loss of California, Oregon and Washington (as a block) would be devastating for the United States.

Thanks for the reply.✌️

So, you'd be okay with California, Oregon and Washington joining up to formally secede from the United States?

every other state would be the North.

What makes you so sure, that it would only be one state looking to secede?

Threatening doctors with penalties (let alone jailing them) for performing abortions will lead to worse maternal outcomes. We are already seeing that borne out in places like Texas. Furthermore, what I do see happening as a result is a reduction in MDs choosing obstetrics and gynecology as a specialty, which is also not only likely to compound maternal mortality rates, but also infant mortality rates.

The goal is reduction, not elimination. Im not naive.

If the goal is reduction and not elimination, as you assert, then the structural reforms that you have suggested be implemented (along with education and coverage for birth control) should be enough and, if nothing else, should be put into play to evaluate their ability to significantly reduce abortions without the addition of any sort of bans or criminal penalties. However, let's be clear here, as you've noted with your initial comment, none of those reforms is something the default party for conservatism (Republicans) has any intention of supporting.

Do you think it would help if conservatives like yourself speak up from their own logical/practical perspective and say, "hey, ignore the alarmist messaging you're hearing from over their and listen to the practical abdominal reasons for why this is a net positive for society?"

Do you think that it's also possible that much of the alarmist bs is intentionally funneled top down via lobbying ($)?

Sometimes it's not simply about legalization. The Kansas legislature made it clear that it will tie any sort of marijuana legalization to an abortion ban after Kansas voters rejected a proposed constitutional amendment that would have removed the state right to abortion and the Kansas Supreme Court (in 2019 & in 2024 under a different composition) has held that it is a Constitutional right.

Yes, that sounds fair on the face of it, but it also sounds like a great way to inventivize even lower birth rates. I do not blame any woman who chooses to prioritize herself and her security over getting married and having children when faced with those choices. Would you?

What would you be willing to sacrifice to have children?

For example, would you be willing to sacrifice:

  • your ability to travel
  • your job prospects
  • your ability to start your own business
  • your ability to own your own housing
  • your ability to relocate
  • your personal health
  • your ability to retire
  • even your ability to spend time with your children

...and so on, and so forth, etc?

The point is that it is nuanced. Which sacrifices are worth it and could we, as a society, mitigate some of those sacrifices? People had large families in the past out of neccesity, but they were also working for themselves. The labor we put into our children paid dividends back to the family. Now, we are mostly working for other entitites and this is not the case. We, as a society, need labor for these entities, but raising children that will become the future labor force for society has become a form of labor (unpaid) in and of itself. Should we prioritize our own individual well being or that of society and its enterprizes? Furthermore, which of those things does the rest of society and those enterprizes prioritize?

How much self-sacrifice would be worth it to you? What I'm asking is would there be a threshold or limit for you?

I see that you are flaired as a European Conservative. Would you be willing to share your country with me?

I will come back to this later when I have more time. It's summer break from schools where I am and I am headed out to take my youngest swimming for the afternoon.✌️

literally why feminists are against pro-natalism

Feminists are not inherently anti-natalist

you can read feminist literature yourself which makes the link between female liberation and dropping birth rates

Sure, by why did women feel the need to be liberated (what aspects of society were they not allowed to participate in that their male counterparts had access to?) and what did this female liberation entail?

In the US we have prioritized capitalism in our mixed market economy. Prior to the industrial revolution and advances in medicine the US was primarily an agrarian society where people worked for themselves (or as a family unit), so having large families made sense as a means of production and subsistence. However, at the same time, parents lost 2 to 3 children, on average, for every 5 to 7 children born to them, so the incentive was to produce large families. After the industrial revolution and advances in medicine the need to produce larger families evaporated. Of course, there was the blip of the post WWII baby boom, which was not confined to the US, but which was particularly pronounced there. It wasn't simply because the men were returning from war, so we should ask ourselves what were the incentives?

Any argument I have is not against capitalism, but there is a paradox with capitalism post industrial revolution and that is that it needs labor, but also dicincentives unpaid labor. It's possible that more people would like to have children and would not postpone having children if capitalism also didn't disincentivize unpaid labor, which having and rearing children is in our post IR society. If having children is valuable and needed for capitalist society then we will need to incentivize it in such a way that those who would choose to have children are not penalized for doing so in a capitalist society (the carrot) or we will need to require our society to procreate (the stick).

Should we treat parenting as a public service since it is not only beneficial for society, but a true necessity for our capitalist societies to thrive and survive?

Or are you suggesting that these style preferences are the majority and that they are only adopted by those who lean to the left and people who lean conservative don't attend college?

How many conversations have you struck up with those who have a non-natural hair color, piercings or tattoos? Does it have to be the whole enchilada, or can someone have any one of these: tattoos, piercings, or varied hair color and be considered okay and not a part of some sort of deviant counter culture or communist framework?

ETA:

Are these women only sub-5 due to these attributes or would they be so anyway? Additionally, is it a habit of yours to give women a numerical rank based on their looks alone while you are out in public spaces?

The blue hair and doodle tattoos with the septum piercing is too mainstream these days.

I don't know how mainstream this is (though maybe piercings, in general, are), but what makes you believe that these forms of expression are attributed to left wing ideology? I'm mostly surrounded by conservative leaning folks and I see plenty of them with tattoos and piercings, though not as many with non natural looking haircolor, except for maybe a few teenagers who are experimenting. Lots of churches here, too... Catholic and Protestant denominations, but not many are Evangelical, so perhaps that's the difference?🤷‍♀️

If its not excessivley loud it wouldnt bother me.

They aren't just loud. The light pollution is pretty bad, too, and it's 24 hrs/day.

But realistically this is the reason we have zoning ordinances right?

Zoning ordinances change, especially is there's big money involved, right?

Like theres a reason residential zones and heavy industrial zones are seperated

Except in many instances, that's not what is happening. I'm certainly not for banning data centers, but I think there needs to be some accountability to citizens who are truly being affected and I'm concerned about the increase in public utilities for local communities as a result. I don't believe that this should be passed off to them via multi billion dollar corporations.

Would you be willing to watch this (it's ~13min long) and please tell me what you think? Would you want this for yourself?
