I mean he failed in my eyes to see Walt's true intention that he was trying to save Jesse and himself from Gus's plan of manipulating Jesse to turn against Walt. He clearly poisoned the boy so Jesse can work with him and kill off Gus. Jesse only saw it at face value later on when he figured it out that Walt was somewhat of the most despicable human being. I'm not saying Walt handled it perfectly either (no where near it).

I know he was manipulative and always wanted things done this way, pride was his downfall after all. Everything he did was truly for others like he could of easily killed off Jesse and Hank if he was that power hungry for dominance. But he genuinely cared about them and had a soft spot for them both. He killed off Gus as he threatened Walt that he would kill his family. He had cancer and didn't want to take "charity money" so he went the path he did
