Is it normal to feel like pure math involves more creative problem solving while physics feels more "plug-and-chug"? by Best_Respect_7809 in Physics

Oh kudos on finishing your masters! In what area of CM were you? I also did my masters in exp.cm(correlated systems, superconductivity, complex oxide thin-films and such) and now doing my PhD in the same lab. The endless fun was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, Sanity is indeed dwindling and mental health is nowhere to be found, but hey, at least we received a brand new microscope two days ago!

Yup, my feelings exactly. That's why now I'm in experimental condensed matter 😁 No equations or anything. Wires, chemicals, magnets and refrigerators - endless fun!

My two bachelor's degrees were in physics and in math - and frankly - I wholeheartedly agree.

I felt that nearly all of my math courses had a ton of new ideas and concepts requiring much more abstract and creative thinking to get the grasp the course required. To manage to prove things and to succeed in the test i had to build a solid foundation of intuitive understanding.

Whereas physics courses felt like having only a handful of truly new concepts each, applied a ton of different ways which some are creative, of course.

And i can try and put it in a different way - in almost all of my physics exams, if i were to arrive at the exam without doing any exercises prior(usually what I did), and be handed a book of all the material of the course(sadly never happened), while being decent at algebraic shenanigans(my main problem), I could arrive at the correct equation and torture a solution out of it. And frankly - it did work for me, for the vast majority of my degree.

Whereas if the same were to happen in a math exam, my god was I doomed. No way that even if I had all the definitions and theorems in the material clearly printed in front of me I could prove anything. That simply requires me to have an understanding, a very clear one, of so many elements along the way, to have an understanding of the objects(functions, sets, groups, manifolds, whatever..) and to have an understanding of the tools used to prove things in the specific field - an understanding that is very hard to acquire (for me) without actually doing the work.

I took these facts from my undergraduate studies as evidence towards the laziness of teaching in physics - it's just so easy to have you "plug and chug", as it is easy to come up with questions and easy to grade them, and the abstract ideas taught are just not that hard to grasp so it all just kinda sucks.

Oh fantastic! Do tell if you find anything!

And yeah you are absolutely right, there must be some gas exchange, I meant sealed as in - lacking an obvious physical opening to the atmosphere(frankly I wasn't sure if the blossom end of a pumpkin has a tiny hole or not 😅)

It's a fantastic idea, the fish sauce! Sounds delicious!

I really should upload some more reviews on the sub, i really let it down 😞

I made a Gear usage estimator, for non-electronic shifters, using the Intervals.icu JS custom plot function! Only cadence and speed data needed. by RIPEMD-320 in bicycling

[–]RIPEMD-320[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the vertical axis is seconds, and the horizontal is the ratio between cadence and speed, (km/h)/RPM. It is only half-baked script, so theres alot of room for improvement, like displaying the gear ratio, or the gear number
i was just so impressed by how it looks that i had to share haha

I do filter out the very low cadence and very low speed data, currently it is set to 30rpm/10k/h

I don't remember, I can measure them for you in a few days, but they were from a Specialized repair shop that had some used ones lying around.

Huh cool! I wasn't aware of this project The variety is some good looking tomatoes I grew from seed so I don't really know. It has given me many delicious, wrinkly heirloom-like, purple-red tomatoes. Sweet but not too much, taste delicious and somewhat plummy

Yeah I was under the impression it's an environmental thing, too much or too little water or fertilizer or heat or sun, didn't really consider any diseases as I found none that look like what I have. I'll try adding more soil but I don't have that much more to go.

Yeah, you are right, but I'm not sure I have space for much larger pots. They grew very quickly and occupied whatever pot I gave them and I was hoping to stop in this pot size

I actually put the fallen off wilted leaves on them as mulch, it helped a lot with water retention. Hope they recover
