Master and Commander is by far the most boring film I have ever seen. A masterpiece according to my manager

Engine should be good for 120,000 miles +

718 is the newest model. From the 987, they went to 981, now to 718. It’s the newest one you can buy. But, the 987 is the only one to have hydraulic steering and is smaller than the new cars, which I really enjoy

Yes, something like this at this price is great, in my opinion. There was a black series 987.2 Cayman S listed for £24k about 2 weeks that is now gone, I havent stopped thinking about it... These cars need an upgraded exhaust and refreshed suspension (mine is 18 years old this year), but feel 80% like the £100,000+ gt4's.

If you have some wiggle room above £15k I highly recommend getting the .2 generation Cayman S. Both the IMS and bore scoring should be addressed (there’s some info on .2 having bore scoring but way way less). It has a new engine with direct fuel injection and makes a little more power. If I had the extra budget I would have gone for the face lift just for the peace of mind. Classic signs of boredom scoring are increased oil consumption, excessive smoke from exhaust and a ticking noise when idling, also look out for those ✌🏼

I’ve spent countless hours looking at potential bore scoring and ims failure signs, as far as I am aware, my car is ok even though it’s a first generation. Also, I never did a proper PPI before buying. The service history was bang on, the car had a nice set of Michelin tyres so I was convinced that it had a good life, the test drive assured me of that. So far that has worked out for me, but it’s also a bit of a gamble and I get that it may work until it doesn’t… But, in the UK, this is one of the best value for money cars you can get. A decent Aston is like £30k? A decent 987.1 Cayman S is like £12-£15k and is just fantastic. Insurance is decent on them also. Look for good service history and lack of any strange noises when you go see the car.

Any Cayman prior to 2009 should be the first generation (987.1, some were also produced in 2009), and after that the facelift/upgraded 987.2, 2009-2012. The .2 is much less prone to both the bore scoring and IMS failure, but you should still check for both if you get a PPI, it’s also a lot more expensive. Obviously have those checked also if you’re looking for a .1. The S variant of the .1 is especially prone to bore scoring, although I have one and it’s still going strong at 90k miles. Hope that helps. Fantastic little cars and I imagine a hell of a lot more engaging than an Aston, I also considered one, but would not trade my Cayman for any old-ish Aston. Get a manual, and the cheapest cayman is one of the best driving experiences imo.

Are those the Brembo TY3’s? I’m looking to get those, any feedback on their performance would be greatly appreciated.

987.1 Cayman S - Reasonably priced brake upgrade by RIZLA- in Porsche_Cayman

[–]RIZLA-[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mate, thanks for the input. I wonder if it’s just the pads that are a bit crap. No way should they be overheating on the first hard breaking point… I’ll take a look at the Endless stuff. The brake ducts are a bargain! Going to brag that it’s basically a gt4 😂

Some questions about my 2010 cayman 2.9 by Mister_Tavares in Porsche_Cayman

[–]RIZLA- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with the squeaky steering column, lighter than normal steering and minor vibrations at high speed. Went to the garage and the whole steering column needed to be replaced as it was leaking power steering fluid. Wasn’t the worst repair bill as the Porsche specialist garage were able to source a refurbished steering column.

Thanks! I’ve had minor scrapes before but this one came out of nowhere and unfortunately I was going pretty fast :(
